What is the Goodwood Cup?
The Goodwood Cup is a Group 1 race run during Glorious Goodwood and is open to horses aged three years or older. Taking place over two miles, the Goodwood Cup will often see horses that competed in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot earlier in the season. A race that will see the most stamina-laden horses come to the fore, the Goodwood Cup is one of the primary targets for the marathon performers with some notable names having tasted victory down the years.
Double Trigger was a memorable winner of the race on three occasions, while Royal Ascot hero Yeats was another multiple winner of the Goodwood Cup, with more recently Stradivarius being the dominant performer retaining his crown on more than one occasion for the team of John Gosden and Frankie Dettori.
What happened in the 2020 Goodwood Cup?
John Gosden's Stradivarius landed an historic fourth win in the Goodwood Cup, as the legendary stayer weaved his way out of trouble in the closing stages to eventually hit the front in the final furlong to outclass Nayef Road and Santiago, who finished second and third, respectively. Held off the pace, Stradivarius was short for room as they turned for home, and Frankie Dettori had to bide his time, but once he found daylight, Stradivarius quickened impressively to retain his crown.
🙌 History made!
Stradivarius is on song once again, winning the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup for a FOURTH time
