In order for the bet to win, all selections on the three-leg bet must be successful.

This increases the risk of the bet losing when compared to a single or doubles bet, but it also means the returns potential is higher than if the punter had put all three selections on separately.

How to Calculate a Trebles Bet?

Trebles bet calculation is simple. Once the punter has decided on the three selections they want to combine as a treble, the odds are multiplied together and then multiplied by the stake, this provides the potential returns.

In the example below, the odds multiplication shows the potential returns of a £10 bet is £122.01.

Brentford to beat Fulham @ 11/10 (2.10)

Leeds to beat Wolves @ 3/5(1.61)

Bournemouth to beat Newcastle @ 5/2 (3.50)

To put it another way, once the first selection has won, the returns of that selection are staked on the second, and if that wins, those returns are staked on the third. Remember if one of the legs does not win then the whole bet has lost.

Trebles Bet vs. Other Multiple Bets (Doubles, Accumulators, Trixies, Patents)

A trebles bet is risk vs reward betting when compared to a singles bet, which only requires a punter to make one selection, or a double where two selections are required.

However, there is less risk on a treble than for a longer form accumulator bet such as a fourfold, where the punter would have to make four successful selections to secure a winning bet.

Like a treble, a trixie bet also requires three selections, but these are split into four bets - three doubles and a treble. This means that the punter will still get a return if one selection loses, but it also requires four times the stake.

Similarly a patent bet requires three selections but these are split over seven bets - three singles, three doubles and a treble. This guarantees a return even if only one selection wins but, like with the trixie, the winning amount will depend on the odds for the given selection(s).

The below table highlights the difference between a trebles bet when compared to singles, doubles, trixies and patents. The selections and odds included come from the above example.

When is the Best Time to Use a Trebles Bet?

The best time to use a trebles bet as part of your sports betting strategy is when you are confident that three separate selections are going to win. If you are not certain about one or more of the selections then it is best to either remove those and go with a single or double, or alternatively combine as either a trixie or patent.

Using the previous example, if you fancy Brentford, Leeds and Bournemouth all to win, then that would be the best time to deploy a trebles bet, as it would offer greater potential returns then backing each selection in individual singles bets.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Betting Trebles?

The main drawback to a trebles bet is there is greater risk of the bet losing than compared to a singles or doubles bet, as it requires three selections to win rather than one or two.

There is also no safety net with a trebles bet, as unlike a trixie or patent, the bet loses even if just one of the selections fails to win.

How Do I Place a Trebles Bet?

Below is a step-by-step guide explaining how to place a trebles bet.

Navigate to your chosen bookmaker website and login

Select the three bets you want to combine for your treble

Add each selection to your betting slip

Choose the 'Treble' option on your bet slip and enter stake

Select 'Place Bet'

It’s the simplest form of sports betting and requires only one selection to be successful to deliver a return.

For example, a bet placed on Arsenal to beat Manchester United in the Premier League would be a single selection and therefore form a single bet.

These wagers provide the basis for more complex bets such as doubles, trebles, accumulators, trixie and yankees.

Two single selections placed together become a double, but the wager requires only one unit stake.

Singles are a common bet, which can be placed on a wide range of sports and markets.

How to Calculate Returns on a Single Bet?

Odds can be displayed most commonly in fractional format, for example 2/1, but also in decimal, which would see 2/1 be shown as 3.0.

In terms of fractions, a £10 bet at 2/1 would return £30. That's £20 in winnings, plus the £10 stake returned.

Returns are calculated according to the odds. If Arsenal were 3/1 to beat Manchester United and won, the returns would be £30 winnings plus £10 stake.

In horse racing, and betting generally, fractions can be more complicated. A successful £10 bet on Red Rum to win at 6/4 would return £25.

To calculate the returns - the 6/4 fraction can be turned into a decimal of 1.5. The £10 stake is multiplied by 1.5 to give £15 and the £10 wager is added to give a total return of £25.

Single Bet Strategy: When to Use It?

A single bet can offer the best value when betting.

The purest form of a wager requires the punter to find only one position where an outcome is more likely than that implied by the odds. Multiple bad-value selections compound the negative value and also require the punter to bet into the bookmaker's margin on multiple occasions.

In theory, single bets can offer a better strike rate and that is advantageous when betting with a small bankroll or for those punters who do not appreciate long losing runs.

Single Bet vs. Accumulator Bets

A single bet requires only one selection to be successful to deliver a return, and depending on price, they should offer a better strike rate of winners in comparison to an acca.

Clearly, the price of a bet is the key denominator in this scenario, but an acca would require four, five, six or more bets to land in order to pay out.

An acca would generally carry more risk, as they would be placed at a greater price, but they can also deliver bigger returns for the same unit stake as a single.

It is easier to research one match or team thoroughly than to analyze multiple events, which is another key benefit of placing a single bet.

Single bet over acca

Positive

Negative

Unlike accumulators, you only need one selection to win rather than relying on multiple outcomes

Potential for small returns, with accas offering greater odds

Easy for those new to betting to understand

Stakes may need to be increased

Potential of more frequent returns

Requires patience to deliver long-term returns

Easy to manage bankroll

Are There Any Drawbacks to Single Bets?

The main drawback to single bets is stake sizing. In general, a bet placed on a single outcome may be a fairly short price. In order to deliver big returns stakes may need to be increased.

How Do I Place a Single Bet?

It’s simple to place a single bet - here’s a step-by-step guide

Simply navigate to the betting site

Login to your account

Deposit the required amount

Find your selection

Add the selection to the bet slip

Add the stake to the bet slip

Press confirm

It is always a race that demands a bit more than just raw ability, with stamina, jumping and luck in running all playing their part, and this year’s renewal looks to be no different. Billy Grimshaw has gone through the contenders and picked out his idea of the winner.

To say KIM ROQUE got a poor ride at Cheltenham would be an understatement, with Joseph O'Brien's fast finishing six-year-old given next to no chance anchored in rear before storming home for fourth in the Kim Muir. Clearly, the odds compilers for Saturday at Ayr believe he is better than that result as he is the market leader for the 2026 Scottish Grand National, a race which looks sure to suit, given the marathon test on offer. I'm in no doubt he has a few pounds in hand and now that J J Slevin takes over in the plate I expect him to be ridden much more prominently and have no stamina doubts whatsoever. His mark looks lenient, given his Cheltenham form, - both last time and the time previously - and given he is still just six he is the unexposed contender in this field. Backing the favourite in a Grand National went well for those at Aintree, and although it is not as exciting as putting up an outsider, he is the best horse in this field to my eye and I'd not be shocked to see him go off a well backed 3/1 favourite and win. Take the 5s now if you can.

This is not the strongest Scottish Grand National we have ever seen but it is competitive. King Of Answers would be a popular winner given he represents the home team of Scudamore and Russell but for all he improved and ran a career best in the National Hunt Chase he has a lot of weight to lug around here. Whatever I think of the horse, though, I cannot back him giving a stone to Kim Roque, for all I do rate the National Hunt Chase as a piece of form and will be following the winner next season. One suspects we will see the absolute best of King Of Answers when he encounters softer ground, too.

Ask Brewster won the Kim Muir in which Kim Roque could only manage fourth and looks to potentially be on for another easy lead here, however, given he was all out to win that race over 3m2 and has been hiked up 7lbs for this race, he is one I'll be avoiding. The other pace angle could be Isaac Des Obeaux for Paul Nicholls, who has won two of the last nine renewals of this race. He bounced back to form to spring a bit of a surprise last time out in the Midlands National and while this will be tougher given the competitiveness of the field and his rise in the weights, the rest of the field would do well to not let Sam Twiston-Davies loose on the front end. He is a danger.

The other Nicholls horse Quebecois is the choice of Harry Cobden - although it is tough to tell who is top man at Ditcheat these days with Cobden having one foot out of the door - and he looks the ideal type to finally go a few places better to win a big one here. He ran a stormer on handicap debut in the Ultima, going down under a length in third, and could well be prominent along with his stablemate if Harry Cobden decides he is confident in his mount's staying power. He has a shot, but I think I'd prefer to back Isaac Des Obeaux in a match-up between the pair.

Road To Home is in the same category as Ask Brewster in that - in my view - both were lucky to finish ahead of Kim Roque in the Kim Muir due to their prominent position in a dawdle of a race. Another flashback to Cheltenham comes with top weight Blaze The Way for Mags Mullins, with son Danny set to take the ride. We can almost always put a line through the Irish runners in the Ultima as they just never win, but this lad ran with plenty of credit just weakening out of contention late. Top weight here won't make it easy, especially with the ground softening, but if he gets into a good rhythm Danny Mullins is a jockey I love having onside and I wouldn't rule him out of the race.

Clearly there are chances aplenty in here but the more I watch back that Kim Muir, the more I think the best horse in the race is in fourth. Given we now get a chance to back him at 5/1 - the each-way scumbag's favourite price - I think he is one of the better place bets you will see all jumps season. Joseph O'Brien will no doubt have been targeting the Kim Muir all season but he is a wonderful trainer and would not be sending him here for the trip to Scotland. If he wasn't at the peak of his powers, the six year old would be put away for a big pot next season, so trust in O'Brien junior and back the market leader.

Billy Grimshaw has already previewed the big race, but has two additional bets here to complete his ITV Racing Tips...

14:00 Newbury - Greenham Stakes

Anyone that has followed flat racing for more than a few years knows not to be sucked into Aidan O'Brien's hyperbole about whichever three-year-old colt the lads have deemed will be that season's star stallion prospect, but even the most cynical observers of ALBERT EINSTEIN and the reputation given to him by his trainer will have been surprised just how badly he ran when beaten at odds-on on seasonal debut at the Curragh.

I am of the opinion that one of the best angles in racing is letting a horse off one bad run and, although it has shifted somewhat in recent campaigns, one does not have to stretch too far back in the memory archives to remember when everything sent out by Ballydoyle needed its first run of the season. Albert Einstein simply must be better than what he showed in the Gladness - and not just on the praise showered upon him by his trainer. This was blatantly a very high class two-year-old, as were a couple of the others in here, granted, and getting north of 2/1 about him when he is still thought of as the Ballydoyle Guineas first string looks more than fair to me.

He looked to not particularly handle the softer going at the Curragh and will run on good at Newbury on Saturday barring surprise showers on no weather forecasting site as I pen this piece, so forgiveness is the order of the day. One thing is for certain, Albert Einstein faces a make or break assignment here and I am backing him to pass the test with flying colours. His chief market rival is Zavateri, who looked out of the top drawer at two but is destined, in the opinion of this humble scribe at any rate, for a career as a sprinter. He also looked precocious enough at two and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't quite train on as expected now in his Classic year.

14:20 Ayr - Scottish Champion Hurdle

It could be pretty foolish to be taking on Tellherthename, given his trainer Dan Skelton has been mopping up handicaps with pretty obvious plot jobs throughout this title winning season, but the price of 5/2 left me cold and for all he has a favourite's chance, I'll be taking him on. He was held up last time out at Cheltenham in a race where the only horses involved were on the pace, and once it was noted he could not get involved he was not given a hard time. Given he is normally a frontrunner, it does not take Sherlock Holmes to work out that the County was never the day and this could very well be it. If he is sent to the front early by Harry Skelton we will know this is the day, but he'll have quite the rival for the lead in the shape of TUTTI QUANTI.

Regular readers of my musings (hi again, Mum) will know I am a serious Harry Cobden fan boy, particularly when he is on a front runner over fences. We get two out of three here for the Champion Hurdle no show and that'll do for me I do not think there'd be much between the top two in the betting was Tutti Quanti coming here off the back of his storming Newbury Handicap Hurdle win and so 9/2 represents excellent value. Indeed, some more cautious punters may even prefer an each-way bet here, but for my money he'll be backed win only.

His Newbury win may in the fullness of time be the pinnacle of his career, but what a pinnacle it was dismantling a competitive looking handicap from the front end. If he is in anything like the same form here, he will win it's as simple as that. The weight he has to give to the field is not ideal, but the rain certainly is as his career highlight of course came in the mud. There's no chance Ayr will get heavy by race time, but if soft is the prevailing ground condition I wouldn't want to be on anything else in this race. I also could put no one off backing him in any boosts they see about winning margins, given the relentlessness he showed on his penultimate start.

The current NAPs standings give a solid snapshot of which tipsters are leading the way on profit, and today’s top three come from Ayr, Wolverhampton and Newbury.
The newspaper names are focused on Newbury for Friday’s best bets, with Templegate, Robin Goodfellow and Newsboy all siding with runners on the Berkshire card. That gives this section a nice bit of cohesion if Newbury is where your eye is naturally drawn, and it is a handy place to compare the leading media picks against the wider NAPs leaderboard.

Team News

Bayern head into the second leg with a 2-1 aggregate lead after winning at the Bernabeu last week through goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane.

The German side then tuned up with a 5-0 Bundesliga win over St. Pauli, so confidence should be high going into this one at the Allianz Arena.

Harry Kane was managing an ankle issue around the first leg, but Bayern boss Vincent Kompany said there was no reaction after that match and hoped he would be back to normal.

Lennart Karl has definitely been ruled out after suffering a muscle fibre tear in the back of his right thigh

Real Madrid travel to Munich chasing the tie after the 2-1 first-leg defeat, but they have already won away knockout games against Benfica and Manchester City in this season’s competition, so they will still believe they can turn it around.

Madrid’s official pre-match build-up says Aurelien Tchouameni, Raul Asencio, Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo are all missing for the return leg.

Jude Bellingham is back in the frame and said ahead of the match that he feels good after a frustrating spell with injury

Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Brahim Diaz give Madrid plenty of threat in attack, so the goals angle does not need much selling in a match of this size. Real also scored in the first leg, which is another plus for anyone considering the over 0.5 goals boost.

Head-to-Head

This tie is finely poised, but history says these meetings rarely lack drama. Bayern’s 2-1 win in Madrid last week ended Real’s nine-game unbeaten run in this fixture, and UEFA notes that Real had won the previous four two-legged European ties between the clubs before this season’s quarter-final.

I am looking at a bit of a trend buster to claim the Craven this year, with no horse coming here in the last twelve years with a win under its belt on its previous run tasting glory. Race fitness has certainly not been something that is a prerequisite to win this, with the majority of the last decade's winners having come here on seasonal debut, but I have been very impressed with HIDDEN FORCE both at two and in the early part of this season on the all-weather and think he'll take all the beating here on the Rowley Mile.

Appleby and Buick kicked off the Craven Meeting in style with a couple of strong favourites doing the business on Day One and they are always a combination to be feared at the start of the season, traditionally flying out of the traps. Aidan O'Brien was stereotypically a more sluggish starter but in recent seasons that reputation has been squashed somewhat, however although I do believe Hawk Mountain will evolve into a smart colt over further as this season goes on, I don't see him being cherry ripe for this whereas with a Kempton win already secured, we know Hidden Force is cooking on gas for season 2026.

Admittedly, he will need to improve on his two length win last time out on the all-weather but he looks a no nonsense sort with gears to crank through. The run will, despite the trends, be a huge help in my view for a yard that have won three of the last seven renewals. A negative for Hawk Mountain is Ireland's shocking record in the race, with no winner since 2005. It is rare Aidan sends his very best runner to this race, preferring to either prep at home or come to Newmarket in early March for the Classic fresh.

Given the master of Ballydoyle has had such a stranglehold on the 2000 Guineas, the race this contest is a huge trial for, it is no surprise to see there has been no Craven winner go on to win the Guineas in 22 years. Despite the trends again being against him should he head for the Classic, I would not be surprised if Hidden Force snaps that trend.

He is, of course, not the only Godolphin representative in this field and Avicenna certainly looked above average at two for Roger Varian. He is a touch skinny on bare form to my eye at around 9/2, but there is no doubting he has untapped potential given both his wins last season came despite obvious greenness. Wrapping up his season last time out he defeated Hankelow by a nose at Doncaster, but the second that day I'd fancy to reverse form here given he has a Newmarket win on his CV and looks the more straightforward proposition to support on seasonal debut. Karl Burke's Night Of Thunder colt is actually the horse I fear most for my bet on Hidden Force, but he still has something to find to my eye.

There is a fair gap from the aforementioned quartet to the rest of the field of seven in the market, but the Craven has often seen shock winners and I'd be in no rush to lay double figures about the Gosden trained Oxagon even with just two each-way places on offer. He finished last season with a whimper, but that was in the Futurity Stakes late in the season and upon rewatching that race, it was evident to see he just did not handle the soft ground whatsoever.

With the ground set to be good he will almost certainly be revitalised and given the Gosden pair won this race last year with the ultra impressive Field Of Gold, I do not think he should be dismissed. The application of cheekpieces is also interesting, indicating perhaps he has not been straightforward over the winter but I've no doubt he has ability and could make a mockery of the price of 10/1 I am seeing across the boards. Venetian Prince looks held on form with Hidden Force given their Kempton clash last time, when he was comfortably beaten by two lengths, and Commander's Intent looks a bit outclassed on everything we've seen from him thus far. An informative affair undoubtedly awaits us, but I am sweet on the Godolphin first string enhancing their strong record in this race and meeting itself.

Today’s NAPs Table - Top 3

There is an interesting look to the leaderboard this afternoon, with the current table leader siding with a well-fancied runner in the Newmarket opener and the next two places taken by selections at Southwell and Haydock. It gives punters a nice spread across the main meetings, from the Craven card on the Flat through to the staying test at Haydock, and these are the three names setting the pace in today’s NAPs standings right now.

We’ve rounded up the current NAPs table leaders, the headline newspaper picks and two fresh talking points from around the sport.

Today’s NAPs Table – Top 3

The live NAPs leaderboard is split between Newmarket and Market Rasen today, with the opening afternoon races already dominating the table. Shadow King leads the way for racing-daily.com in the 1.50 at Newmarket, while Andrew Mount and Whistler both head to Market Rasen with Giovanni Change and Lord Chamberlain. It gives punters a tight cluster of early races to focus on if they are following the strongest names on the board.

RaceOlly has a spread of selections across Newmarket, Newton Abbott and Market Rasen today, all at tasty prices. Check them out on our tips hub page.

Templegate & Other Big Name NAPs

The newspaper tipsters are heavily drawn towards the better Flat fare at Newmarket and the evening action at Lingfield, rather than spreading themselves all over the jumps cards. Templegate’s main fancy comes in the 4.10 at HQ, Robin Goodfellow also sides with a Newmarket handicapper, and Newsboy looks to the all-weather at Lingfield for his best bet. If you want three quick names from the national-paper ranks, these are the headline picks to note.

Templegate - Major Neigh Sayer, Newmarket 16:10

Newsboy - Profit Street, Lingfield 19:30

Racing News Round-Up

Newmarket returns to the spotlight today with the Craven meeting beginning on the Rowley Mile, and that always gives the week a sharper edge. It is one of the first major Flat fixtures of the spring and the sort of card that can throw up horses for the Guineas and beyond, so there is more than the usual mid-April interest around the action at headquarters.

Constitution Hill is all set for his biggest test on the level in the John Porter at Newbury, which takes place this Saturday and will no doubt attract plenty more eyeballs than at any time in the Group 3's history.

We’ve rounded up the current NAPs table leaders, the headline picks from the newspaper names and a couple of fresh racing stories doing the rounds.

Today’s NAPs Table – Top 3

The NAPs leaderboard has a distinctly Leicester flavour to it this afternoon, with the top three all siding with runners on the East Midlands card. King’s Cavalry heads the standings for racing-daily.com, while Andrew Mount and Whistler complete the top three with picks later on the same card. It gives the Leicester meeting extra interest for anyone following the hottest names in the table today.

The newspaper tipsters are split across the afternoon cards rather than piling into one obvious banker. Templegate goes north to Hexham for his main selection, while Robin Goodfellow and Newsboy both focus on Leicester. If you want three quick names to keep an eye on through the day, these are the headline naps from the best-known national paper voices.

I Am Maximus's regaining of the crown remains the talking point after Saturday’s Grand National, with the latest reaction centring on just how rare his achievement was. His second Grand National win has put him alongside the modern Aintree greats and inevitably sparked early chatter about whether he could now mount a Red Rum-style tilt at a third success next year.

There has also been a positive update on Mr Vango after his Aintree fall. Connections are hopeful of a full recovery, which means the 2026 Grand National - despite seeing plenty of fallers and unseats - has seen no fatalities.

Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Reece James are not expected to be ready for Sunday.

Enzo Fernandez is also set to miss out through internal suspension.

Manchester City will be without Ruben Dias.

Josko Gvardiol is still not close to returning after his long-term leg injury.

John Stones is edging back towards fitness, but his involvement is less certain.

Head-to-Head

City have had the better of this fixture in recent seasons, and Chelsea are still chasing a first league win over the champions since 2021. The reverse meeting this season ended 1-1, while Stamford Bridge has not been a happy recent hunting ground for the Blues in this matchup.

Fight Preview

This is yet another return from retirement for the former undisputed champion of the world Tyson Fury, as he bids once more to climb to the summit of heavyweight boxing now deep into his thirties. The fight is taking place on Grand National Day at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and he has certainly not picked a gimme opponent as his return. Nevertheless, Fury has only tasted defeat to the best of his generation Usyk and so he is the right favourite.

Here we roundup the best betting offers for the marathon test on Merseyside so you can have a profitable end to the Aintree Festival.

BOYLE Sports - Bet £10, Get 6 Places on the Grand National

BOYLE Sports have a fantastic offer for new customers betting on the Grand National who love getting each-way value. A huge six places, as oppose to the industry standard four, could be the difference between a winning and losing bet.

A BOYLE Sports account should be viewed as almost essential for anyone serious about horse racing betting as they offer competitive prices, fantastic boosts regularly and have recently launched a bet builder tool. For Saturday's headline race they are paying six places each-way.

Grosvenor - Double Odds On Your First Bet

One of the more unique betting offers in the space and confirmed to be applicable on the Grand National itself, new Grosvenor customers can bag a double odds token to be used on their first bet once signing up.

In the Grand National, whether you are siding with the favourite I Am Maximus or a bigger priced outsider, having your odds doubled (max stake £10) can mean a huge difference in potential payout. Grosvenor also have a competitive horse racing offering as well as other sports so if you want a new bookie for Aintree Saturday, look no further.

Pricedup - Bet £40, Get £20 in Free Bets

A newer face on the scene but certainly not here to make up the numbers, new Pricedup customers can bag 4x£5 racing single free bets by signing up through the link below and betting £40 on the action at Aintree.

The qualifying bet must be placed on a horse with a price of EVS (2.0) or bigger and the 4x£5 free bet tokens must be used on racing markets, but this is an excellent offer for those who may want a few small wagers on the Grand National while betting a larger qualifying stake on a stronger fancy earlier in the day on Merseyside. Pricedup is a great account to have as they often go with the boldest price boosts in racing, both on the day and antepost for the biggest events.

Dabble - Bet £10, Get £10

Last but by no means least we have Dabble, with one of the simplest offerings. Bet £10 on the racing prior to the Grand National and receive a £10 free bet you can use on the big race at 4pm. Dabble do things a little differently to most more traditional bookies, with their offering app only and a heavy leaning on community and banter feel once in the app.

Their pricing is more than competitive and they have regular rocket boosts to give their customers value, while their place markets are some of the most competitive in the industry.

Billy Grimshaw has gone back through the field on race morning and narrowed the race down to his strongest bets, including the each-way angles he thinks offer the best value in today’s market.

Billy's Grand National Selections

Captain Cody - Johnny Burke - Willie Mullins - 16/1

Quai De Bourbon - Donnagh Meyler - Willie Mullins - 25/1

I am ready to be cursing myself come quarter past four this afternoon if my 2025 pick at 40/1 Grangeclare West goes two places better in the 2026 renewal. I’m in no doubt he’d have beaten I Am Maximus at the very least last year were it not for his final fence blunder and this year he does not have Nick Rockett to go past given the reigning champion was a late withdrawal-poor Tom Bellamy.

However, in betting, price is everything and given we were getting north of 33/1 for most of the build-up to last year’s race and now must settle for 10/1 about Grangeclare West, he will not be carrying my cash this time around. He and I Am Maximus are probably each way bankers, especially with extra place bookies, but I suspect the former left his victory behind in 2025 and the latter has had his day in the sun with younger legs set to triumph later today.

When I began penning this piece Panic Attack was still double figures, but the gallant mare is heading for favouritism at around 8/1 across the boards right now and, for all it’d be some story as no mare has claimed this race since 1959, I cannot see it. She has been tremendous this season for the Skeltons, winning the old Hennessy and Paddy Power Gold Cup, but her best runs have come with soft in the going description and as a ten year old mare on the back of a long season and 8/1? Nope.

There’s a group of JP McManus horses next in the market and I’d be much keener on Johnnywho upholding the Cheltenham form with Jagwar than a reversal, for all the latter is a shorter price here. Both look to be well weighted given their exploits last month but Jagwar - even in first time cheekpieces - does not jump well enough to win a Grand National to my eye, even the modern day iterations where the fences are much more forgiving. He also doesn’t like a battle.

Johnnywho tempted me, but this feels a bit of an afterthought with Cheltenham being his main target for the season according to his trainers. Iroko has a similar profile but scoped dirty after Cheltenham and I’m expecting him not to better his fifth in the race last season. The fourth and final JP horse around 10-16/1 is Oscar’s Brother, who is unexposed and has his chance, but I worry needs soft ground. There are bundles more horses worthy of a mention but enough of those I don’t like, let’s get into my 2026 Grand National tips.

My headline selection comes from Closutton and is 2025 Scottish Grand National hero CAPTAIN CODY. To call him a tricky customer would be an understatement, but Willie Mullins has almost certainly had this race as his target ever since he crossed the line up at Ayr last April. He’ll handle the weight of 10st10 with ease and will give Johnny Burke a huge chance of Grand National glory if, as I suspect, he settles better back in a big field like this and is economical with his jumping over these iconic obstacles. One thing he certainly won’t lack is stamina and on the long home straight at Aintree, I would not want to be a backer of anything that sees Captain Cody a length or so down stalking.

His price will hopefully hold around 18/1 given he is not in the first few Mullins names in the market and has a relatively low profile jockey booking. He is the horse I’m sweetest on, but I won’t be firing just one bullet at this big field handicap, however, and it’s another Mullins outsider who’s been on my mind for months that has made it into the staking plan: QUAI DE BOURBON. He could not reel in Haiti Couleurs in last season’s Irish Grand National but was giving Rebecca Curtis’s horse weight that day and now receives plenty. Additionally, he was only six when running a mighty race for third that day.

This season he began by disappointing when the 3/1 Troytown favourite, pulling up on heavy ground and doing the same thing on heavy again in the Thyestes. He did, however, bounce back to form with a confidence boosting third at Leopardstown in early March and I’ve come to the conclusion he will never act on heavy. He certainly won’t face that kind of test this afternoon and a mark of 151 undoubtedly underestimates this horse, especially as a seven-year-old with surely plenty of improvement left to come.

I recommended last year to take advantage of any specials readers could find for Mullins to train the 1-2-3-4 and hopefully somebody made a few quid doing just that, although I wasn’t alone. This year it could well be a similar story, with the obvious front two in the market, my two fancies and the potential for improvement in Lecky Watson due to the going or Champ Kiely due to the marked step up in trip. That’s without mentioning the talented enigma Spanish Harlem too!

I’m less confident that the master of Closutton will be quite so dominant in the 2026 renewal of the Grand National, however, for the dreamers there is no harm in perming up some huge priced top finish accumulators with all the Mullins army. He is operating in another stratosphere to what we’ve seen before and doubting his genius is a risky game.

As always, I’m bringing you a NAP and a NB, as well as TWO Each Way bets for today’s feature race.

The big one gets underway at 4pm and the eyes of the sporting world will be on Aintree for one of the highlights of the year. Without further ado, let’s get down to business and get straight on with things – starting with my best bet on Day 3.

NAP (BEST BET)

12:45 Aintree - Maghull Novices' Chase

My strongest fancy of the day comes in the opener and SALVATOR MUNDI looks well placed to add a second Grade 1 victory to his record. Available at odds against at the time of writing, that could look like a massive price come Saturday evening.

He can be a tad inconsistent but if he brings his A-game then the rest are competing for second. He was supreme when winning at Thurles in February and he jumped incredibly well and that is a huge asset over this minimum trip.

Connections made the decision to bypass Cheltenham in favour of Aintree and it might turn out to be a smart move. On paper, he’s probably the most exciting prospect in this race and hopefully he produces a top class performance.

GRAND NATIONAL BEST BETS

16:00 Aintree - Grand National

The Grand National has been the plan for JORDANS all year and he seemed to relish the nature of Aintree when finishing second in a Grade 1 novice chase 12 months ago. Ben Jones has been booked to ride and he’s been in excellent form this season, operating at a strike rate of 34% over fences.

Joseph O’Brien is a shrewd target trainer and I can envision this Coastal Path gelding running a massive race if everything goes to plan. He mightn’t have the ‘class’ of some of his rivals but he’s certainly got a National profile and the quick ground will suit.

A second selection in the feature, JAGWAR will wear first-time cheekpieces at Aintree on Saturday and hopefully they work the trick. He’s undoubtedly talented yet he is prone to a mistake or two and he’s a real contender if he can put it all together here.

Mark Walsh has been booked to ride and it would be some story if he could give owner JP McManus another National winner. Walsh will be replaced by Harry Cobden in the retained rider role as of May and he’s been riding out of his skin since that decision was made. I’m hoping he can produce his best form and if he does, he has his chance.

NEXT BEST

17:00 Aintree - Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

Paul Townend rides LOOK ME for Simon Munir & Isaac Souede and I’m expecting him to go very close. Connections like to save some of their nicer types for this meeting and it’ll be interesting to see if support comes for my selection – he has some decent form in the book and this horse has always been held in high regard.

The quicker ground is an unknown but I can’t see it being an issue for him. Bass Hunter is a worthy favourite on all known form but I’m happy enough to take him on, especially with a fresh horse that has been saved for this meeting.

Connections had the winner of this race last year in Green Splendour and I’ll have my fingers crossed that Willie Mullins can end the meeting on a high. If everything goes to plan, I can see Townend producing his mount in the closing stages and powering away up the Aintree straight.

Writing this following declarations on Wednesday, I was delighted to bag a 3/1 winner in KOKTAIL DIVIN yesterday and to kick off the week in profit. Fingers crossed for more of the same today!

So without further ado, here are my three leading fancies on Friday’s card – including a strong NAP in one of the Grade 1 races. As always, wishing readers the very best of luck on Ladies Day and hopefully it’s a profitable one for you all!

NEXT BEST

13:45 Aintree - William Hill Handicap Hurdle

Up 2lbs for finishing second in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham, HOT FUSS looks primed to go one better at Aintree and the return of David Bass in the saddle is a huge positive.

The step up in trip at Cheltenham was a huge help and 2m4f around Aintree should be right up his street. He’s a strong travelling type and Bass, one of the strongest jockeys in the finish, clearly gets on well with Tom Dascombe’s runner.

His form ties in with the likes of Wilful, Alexei and Mondo Man and he could be thrown in off a BHA mark of 132. It’ll be interesting to see if he can produce the same level of form as at the Festival as he’s a huge danger if he turns up in fine fettle.

NAP (BEST BET)

15:30 Aintree - Melling Chase

I’m expecting HEART WOOD to follow up his Ryanair Chase success with victory in the Melling Chase on Friday afternoon, with just six rivals lining up to oppose him. Henry de Bromhead’s runner sets the standard and he could be too strong here.

There are a few unknowns in the race – with Grey Dawning dropping back in trip while the talented yet fragile Gidleigh Park would probably be my alternative play. Having said that, I’m not sure either can beat Heart Wood if he brings his best form to the table.

I was thrilled to see the Henry de Bromhead runner prevail after previously falling short at Grade 1 level and hopefully he can follow up here. Now rated 168, he has the rating to win this event and 6/4 seems like a fair price to me.

LONGSHOT

16:05 Aintree - Topham Chase

An impressive winner of this race 12 months ago, GENTLEMAN DE MEE bids to give JP McManus another success in the race. I suggested in November that a return to Aintree may well be the plan and he’ll run off a BHA mark of 158 – just 3lbs higher than when winning last year.

It doesn’t look the strongest renewal of the Topham Chase to my eye and you’re taking a chance on Madara handling the Grand National fences if you’re backing him at a short price. He is the obvious danger based on his Cheltenham victory in March.

He is 2-2 at Aintree and all six of his victories have come in February, March or April. The conditions in spring seem to suit him down to the ground and he is a fantastic each way play at the prices. Write him off at your peril.

Often the Ryanair winner from Cheltenham that same year comes here to attempt the famous double, and Heart Wood fills that spot this season. Despite his obvious claims, Billy Grimshaw is taking him on and has an 8/1 play against him that could spring a surprise.

First things first, Heart Wood put in a monstrous performance at Cheltenham and if it was confirmed he'd run here in the same form, I'd shorten this preview by about 400 words and just tell you to pile in. He finished second to Fact To File in 2025 but in 2026 nothing could live with him in the Thursday feature at Prestbury Park, with his jumping his main asset but the way he travelled through the race a joy to behold. There was never a moment's worry for connections or his backers, but a performance as excellent as that may have come at a bit of a cost.

We as horse racing fanatics must when placing our wagers take every case on its own merits but there is a prevailing wisdom that plenty of Cheltenham winners do not back up at Aintree. I am not sure this always pans out, however I am reticent to steam into horses who clearly had Cheltenham as the season long plan when they head north to Aintree the month after. Henry De Bromhead has made no secret that since March 2025 Heart Wood's season was all about the Ryanair and going one place better, so the fact he has completed his mission makes me wonder if this could be a bit of an afterthought.

The same worry nags at me about second favourite Grey Dawning, who ran a stormer for fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup - a race Dan Skelton has also admitted was his be-all end-all - and is arguably better suited to this sort of distance. He has first time cheekpieces in this race but he had a tough race at Cheltenham and I think this could be another Aintree Festival where he does not quite put in the same level of showing as he did earlier in the spring. Back in his novice chase campaign he won the final Turners but could not back up here at Aintree and although he is now older and wiser, that Gold Cup last month was his toughest test and he may still be feeling it on Friday in here. He is a pass at around 2/1 as well.

I am also against L'Eau Du Sud, a horse I think is just a bit overrated but is certainly a two miler and won't appreciate this step up, but of the rest of the runners given the prices I could not put you off whichever you choose to back. Saint Segal has it all to do but he is 66/1 and there are others in here with blowout potential so he could sneak into the frame given he basically had no race in the Champion Chase last time out, blundering badly at the first and soon being pulled up.

Solness has been well backed as I pen this piece and although he is known as a Leopardstown specialist, Aintree could suit him more than Cheltenham has in the past when he's crossed the water. Despite his buzzy nature, I also don't think a step up in trip on a flat track like this will do him any harm and if he gets into a rhythm off the front end, this is a proper Grade 1 animal for Joseph O'Brien. He has been slashed from 20/1 down to 10/1 since Thursday morning though and so I somewhat feel I've missed the boat, but if he drifts to near 16s I may have a saver on him. JPR One has it all to do on the bare form of the Ryanair loss to Heart Wood but he was there swinging and jumping brilliantly for a long way. Aintree is a less stiff test and this race is over shorter, so again I wouldn't rule him out hitting the frame.

The horse I am once again rowing in with, however, is GIDLEIGH PARK for Harry Fry. I was keen on him for the Clarence House when he was last seen and I knew my fate very early that day, with his jumping being akin to how I'd expect a grand piano to attempt to conquer a fence. That run needs a line putting through it, but if you do this is still a high class and lightly raced chaser. Fry wouldn't be sending him here if he wasn't at 100% as he has been a fragile horse all his life and on paper two mile three around Aintree should be absolutely ideal for this front runner. I am hoping Solness gives him a lovely toe into the race and he can use his freshness to see off the potentially tired Cheltenham backer uppers.

The Topham Chase has seen plenty of good winners over the years and is a real horses for courses race, so with that in mind Billy Grimshaw makes the case to back last year's hero for the all conquering Willie Mullins...

Any race which includes the enigmatic French raider Il Est Francais is fairly easy to read, at least in the early stages. He will bounce out in front and attempt to grind his chasing rivals into submission. Should he arrive here in the form he showed when romping to his stunning Kauto Star success or his gutting second in the Kauto Star a year later, he will take all the beating off a mark of 160, but the issue is he has been running poorly pretty much ever since.

He is not the only headstrong horse who will aim to take the lead here, with Jipcot for the O'Neill team a real tearaway who in victory and defeat has only ever blasted off. Henry De Bromhead's Coming Up Easy is another with stacks of form as a front runner, and I'd give him a much bigger chance of troubling both the French high profile expected leader and the rest of the field. He was last seen in the Paddy Power making a race ending mistake nearly 150 days ago and his trainer has masterfully brought horses back off a lay-off at Aintree before, so he's not one to dismiss should he take to the fences.

However the race is run, we know one thing for certain - GENTLEMAN DE MEE will absolutely love bowling around Aintree again. He has some elite form in his locker, but for this race nothing sets him up more perfectly than his win in this very contest last season when much the best and clearly relishing jumping these unique obstacles. He is 10 now, but Willie Mullins won this in 2021 with an eleven year old in Livelovelaugh so blatantly can get veterans cherry ripe for this specific race.

His G1 winning days are now behind him, of that much we can be fairly sure, but throughout his career it has been best to ignore his winter form as he blatantly sulks through the cold months and comes alive once a bit of sun is on his back and spring ground is beneath his hooves. Earlier in his racing days he was a frontrunner but he is now much more malleable in terms of in race tactics and with a good pace almost guaranteed here I cannot see him finishing out of the first three. He has just two pounds more to carry this season compared to last and while he is another year past his prime, I don't think this is as strong a renewal.

The obvious danger is Cheltenham plot job Madara, who unsurprisingly is the 9/2 favourite here attempting to back up his facile success with a 10lbs rise in the weights unlikely to be enough to stop him featuring. Perhaps he will win again, but I do suspect this is a bit after the lord mayor's show and whatever he achieves in this race, his job is already done for the season whereas for Gentleman De Mee this is his season's crescendo.

As is the case in every Topham, this is competitive and I would not be surprised if Willie Mullins has the 1-2 as I obviously like Gentleman De Mee the most but could see Ile Atlantique finally showing signs of his obvious ability if these fences spark him back to life. He was considered destined for the very top as a novice but has lost his way somewhat, but still only eight he could make a mockery of his mark in here. Will The Wise is another Irish raider with a huge chance for Gavin Cromwell who I would not be surprised to see in the frame.

With competitive fields and plenty of Cheltenham form to weigh up, horseracing.net expert @RoadCheltenham has shared his three best bets for today, including his NAP and Next Best. His full selections and reasoning are below.

EACH-WAY

1:45 Aintree - Anniversary 4YO Hurdle

This race is hotter than first expected but I still think Fred Winter runner up WINSTON JUNIOR can go close as he steps up to Grade 1 company for the first time. He won with any amount in hand at Ascot in January before running a huge race at Cheltenham, despite giving plenty of ground to the prominent Sararoga throughout.

Horses struggled to come from off the pace all week at the Festival so you can definitely mark his run up. He's by Churchill and out of a Iffraaj mare so there is bags of speed in his pedigree and a sharp track like Aintree should suit him, providing Cheltenham hasn't left its mark.

NEXT BEST

2:20pm Aintree - Manifesto Novices' Chase

KOKTAIL DIVIN was in the process of running a big race in the Brown Advisory but failed to see out the trip and the drop back to 2m4f will suit him just as much as stepping up will suit market rival Lulamba.

Henry de Bromhead's form can tail off after Cheltenham but Slade Steel won a Grade 2 at Fairyhouse on Monday while Killaney King was a good second in a 17-runner handicap hurdle on the same card. If he brings his A-game, he will be bang there. He has a bit to find on official ratings but the conditions of this race should suit much better than at Cheltenham.

NAP (BEST BET)

3:30om Aintree - Foxhunters

This has been the plan for UNEXPECTED PARTY all year and winners of Haydock's Walrus Open Hunters Chase often go well around Aintree - the course configurations are similar enough. The Grand National fences are an unknown but he should be fine. Heidi Palin has a great rapport with the horse and she has a 29% strike rate over fences this season, steering him to victory the last twice.

He is a classy individual, with a Grand Annual success and a Listed win on his CV, and he ticks plenty of boxes for a race like this. Dan Skelton knows how to train one for a target and this is his Gold Cup.

Even once-a-year golf watchers would be confident in naming Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as the current top two players in the world. The world number three is a tougher name to recall however, but that berth currently belongs to CAMERON YOUNG, the recent Players' Champion. The big-hitting New Yorker has the tools to claim his first major championship this week.

Scheffler, by his extremely high standards, is in the midst of a significant blip in form. For the Texan, no top 10 finishes in his past three starts represents a drought. McIlroy, meanwhile, has had back problems of late, while LIV golfers Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau may not have enjoyed the best preparation. They are yet to play in the United States in 2026.

Young arrives off a longer layoff, taking four weeks off since his Players title. However, for a player who struggled for much longer than expected to claim a maiden PGA Tour win, he impressively applied the accelerator at TPC Sawgrass - mowing down Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick with a brilliant finish to win by one stroke and signify that he is a new name at the very top of the men's game.

Young was excellent at the Ryder Cup amongst a home US team that gravely underperformed. He has now enjoyed three top 10 finishes in a row, but while he has missed two out of four Masters cuts, he has finished T9 and T7 in the other two demonstrating an ability on the tricky Augusta track. The man in-form looks a prime candidate to go from last name alphabetically to the first name on the leaderboard.

The Best Bookmakers for betting each-way on The Masters

We are recommending three online bookies for your Masters bets based on their sign up offers and free bets, number of each way places being paid on The Masters and the availability of regular odds boosts. If you don't have an account with BOYLE Sports, Sky Bet and Paddy Power yet, check out their welcome offers within this article.

Former Masters champion PATRICK REED is the next name on my shortlist. Reed caused a major shock by quitting LIV Golf earlier this year, pursuing a return to the PGA Tour which is almost secure after two early wins on the DP World Tour. Those victories came in the Middle East and he nearly racked up a hat-trick, losing a play-off in between wins at the Dubai Desert Classic and Qatar Masters.

Reed will have been absent for five weeks when he arrives at Augusta, which may not be ideal. However, his Masters record is exceptional, making every cut since 2018, and earning four top 10s in his last six appearances, including a third placed finish last year. But for a desperately short three-putt on the 13th in the final round, he may even have been in the play-off with McIlroy and Justin Rose.

Finally, I'd like to take a punt on the biggest improver so far in 2026. No Masters debutant has won since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979, but JACOB BRIDGEMAN is well-placed to make history in an open year.

Bridgeman has played eight tournaments so far in 2026 and his worst finish is a tie for 18th He has enjoyed four top 10s, three top 5s, and a win at the Genesis Invitational. That success at Riviera Country Club saw him steer his way nervously to victory and he has continued his form since, finishing fifth behind my other pick Young at the Players Championship.

He warmed up for The Masters with a respectable T14 finish at the Valspar Championship three weeks ago and I feel the bookmakers are still underestimating him. He is arguably one of the top five players in terms of form arriving into this week.

Masters Preview

Why the McIlroy offer appeals

This is the sort of Masters offer that works because it is built around something straightforward. Customers do not need Rory McIlroy to lead after the opening round or challenge for the title straight away. They just need him to make one birdie on Thursday. For a player of McIlroy’s quality, that gives the promotion obvious appeal and makes it an easy way for punters to get involved in the opening day at Augusta.

A low-stakes way into Round 1

With a £1 maximum qualifying stake and a £5 minimum deposit, this is a small-entry offer that still gives customers a big headline price to latch onto. The fact it focuses on Round 1 also adds to the appeal, because it gives punters a bet to follow from the moment The Masters gets under way. Rather than waiting all weekend for the outright market to develop, customers can have an interest in one of the tournament’s biggest stars from the first round.

Additional Masters Value with Sky Bet

As well as offering this exclusive deal for new customers fancying Rory McIlroy to nail a birdie in round 1, Sky Bet have value for their existing customers with each-way bets available with punters paid out if their golfer comes in the top 12 positions.

Masters Preview

Why the Rory offer stands out

For many punters, backing Rory McIlroy simply to make the cut is a much more appealing angle than asking him to win the Green Jacket outright. It keeps the barrier lower while still giving customers the chance to back one of the biggest names in the field at a standout promotional price. That is what makes this offer attractive. It is easy to understand, low cost to get involved with, and tied to a player plenty of bettors will already fancy to put himself in contention over the opening two rounds.

12 places each-way adds another strong angle

Paddy Power are not stopping with the McIlroy special either. They are also paying 12 places each-way on the outright market, which is a major boost for customers who prefer an each-way play in a tournament as deep and competitive as The Masters. Extra places can make a real difference at Augusta, where plenty of punters will be happy to back a player to go well without needing him to win. It gives Paddy Power customers another very strong route into the event alongside the headline Rory promotion.

Why this is a good Masters week offer

The overall package works well because it gives customers more than one way to get involved. There is the eye-catching Rory McIlroy 50/1 make-the-cut special, there is the added value of the £10 football free bet, and there is the reassurance of 12 each-way places for anyone taking on the outright market. For customers planning a bet on The Masters this week, Paddy Power have put together a promotion that covers both the casual bet and the more serious each-way angle.

Billy Grimshaw is on hand to preview the race and is happy to side with Nicky Henderson's star to wrap up his brilliant season in fine style.

Depending on which of the big name runners backing up here after running in the Cheltenham Gold Cup you've backed over the years, you probably have a different opinion on how the Aintree Bowl will pan out. For some, like Denman and Kauto Star, this proved a bridge too far after their heroics in March at Prestbury Park, while for others, like Might Bite and Gerri Colombe, ttheir tremendous form in finishing brave second places at Cheltenham translated to a deserved win in the North West.

Although this year's renewal was all about the phenomenal winning effort of Gaelic Warrior, what JANGO BAIE did in second will not have come without a price being paid. There are few races that leave a mark quite like a big run in the Gold Cup and Nicky Henderson's charge was as brave as can be battling all the way to the line, albeit to no avail given the amazing form of the winner on the day. Undoubtedly, this was a gruelling run which will have sapped the seven year old but if anyone knows when to chuck his horse out again or mind him, it's the master of Seven Barrows.

Back in 2018 Might Bite was involved in an epic battle with Native River at Cheltenham - on heavy ground which arguably robbed him of his Gold Cup - yet came to Aintree just under a month later and put in another dazzling display to take the Bowl, seemingly running to similar form to that he produced at Cheltenham. Given that run was on heavy compared to Jango Baie's 2026 second on good to soft, I am willing to bet Henderson is confident his charge is fit and firing for this race as his season finale. He is a horse I've liked since his novice chase days and if any runner at Aintree this week deserves a big win to round their season off in style, I believe it to be him.

This is not just a sentimental pick, however, as he brings comfortably the best form to the race. This season he demolished the reopposing Pic D'Orhy at Ascot to kick things off before finishing a close up third in the King George followed by his second in the Gold Cup. Although that is undoubtedly a high class season dining at the very top table, it is not too big an ask to request he venture to the well once more to run four big races in a season given he is a hardy sort and still only seven.

Pic D'Orhy is not the main danger today - or if he is, it'll be a surprise - but Impaire Et Passe did beat Jango Baie here fair and square last year. That result would worry me more if one of two things had not happened. First, if Jango Baie had not had such a fantastic campaign and secondly, more crucially, if Impaire Et Passe had skipped Cheltenham to come here as his primary target. That is what he did in 2025 but in 2026 he was surprisingly sent for the Ryanair. He was not unfancied on the day, but pulled up after a bitterly disappointing round. I could not have him on my mind at around 7/2 to win again here after such a lacklustre effort and off such a short - by his usual standards - break.

Spillane's Tower is a horse I would fear if he takes his chance, but I'd make it 50/50 right now that he'll even run given the heatwave I am currently experiencing in the North West. Should he run here Jimmy Mangan will have decided there is enough juice in the ground for him to give his true running, but Wednesday is a seriously drying day and if the ground is anything other than good come Thursday afternoon I'll be surprised. He is the fresh horse and potentially a very good one, but even if he does run I think Jango should have his number.

That just leaves old boy Protektorat and while he is capable of a massive run on his best day, this trip stretches him a touch in my opinion and he is vulnerable to younger legs. Jango Baie is not going to make you rich at around evens, but he is value at the price and can end a season to remember on a winning note.
