Find out who our editor is siding with to cause a shock in Britain's most famous race...

The Derby is rarely just about finding the best horse in a straight line. Epsom asks a very different question to most tracks. The camber, the downhill run, the need to hold a position, the sharp change of rhythm into the straight and the final climb all combine to expose horses who are not bred and built for this very day. That is why it can pay to look beyond reputation and ask which runners have the right blend of class, attitude and scope for the step up in trip.

On that basis, ANCIENT EGYPT makes far more each-way appeal than his price suggests. Charlie Johnston’s colt is not coming here as a speculative maiden or a horse being thrown in purely because connections fancy a day out. He has won three of his four starts, including a Listed race at Newmarket last time, and there was plenty to like about the way he went through that contest. He was strong, professional and notably game when crossing the line, which is a big positive given he is stepping up in trip here..

The market appears to have treated stamina and unfashionable connections as a major concern, but I don't think either of those factors are in play at all. This lad shaped like a colt who would not be stopping over further, and his pedigree gives him every chance of seeing out 1m4f. By Frankel out of an Oasis Dream mare, he has speed on the page, but also enough class and a big enough engine to believe this longer distance could draw more out of him rather than blunt him. If it does, he is in the mix and no double figure shot.

He also has the type of attitude that can take a horse a long way in this race. Some Derby runners arrive with flashier trial form, but not all of them are guaranteed to enjoy the pressure cooker of Epsom. Ancient Egypt has already shown he can dig in and keep responding, which is exactly the sort of quality you want when they swing into the straight and the race begins to unravel. He may not have the sexy profile of some of the more fashionable runners, but he looks straightforward, tough and still on the upgrade.

The draw in stall 10 is ideal as that is the winning-most gate in Derby history and it should give David Egan options, particularly if he can get Ancient Egypt into a rhythm without being forced too wide early. The Johnston team are rarely afraid to have one handy, and this colt looks the sort who could travel into the race in a positive position rather than needing everything to fall perfectly from the back. In a Derby with several runners who still have questions to answer under these exact conditions, that could be important.

There are risks, of course. This is a deeper race than the Newmarket Stakes, he has yet to race on anything slower than fast ground, and Epsom can find out even very good horses. But those doubts are already more than built into the price. I may be overcomplicating things considering the dominance Ballydoyle have exerted over the Classics so far this season in not backing their hot favourite Benvenuto Cellini, particularly as his style reminds me so much of last year's Derby winner Lambourn in that he ground and galloped his way to a Chester success as his final prep run. For all he has claims, however, this is a deep looking Derby and he just cannot be a 2/1 shot, for all he could go and win.

It'd be some story if James J Braddock were to win The Derby for Joseph O'Brien, fourteen years on from his trainer riding the brilliant Camelot to Epsom glory. He has done nothing wrong and looks tough as teak, so if the rain really starts to fall I expect him to be the horse most positively impacted. There are chances aplenty, with Item of course the pick of the runners in the Dante given his commanding success there, but I am very sweet on Ancient Egypt's chances and think that barring a superstar in here, he should be right there swinging when the prizes are dished out.

The ITV Racing cameras are of course in town ready to witness history and Billy Grimshaw has three recommended bets outside of the Classic worth consideration...

14:05 Epsom - Princess Elizabeth Stakes

A decent field has assembled for this Group 3 contest and the first thing I wanted to do was be dead set against 3/1 favourite She's Perfect, given the sheer depth of challenge in behind her. She is winless in five, albeit her connections and plenty of others argue she should have been a French Guineas winner in that sequence, but although every horse is entitled a poor run to start their campaign I thought she was beaten easily enough at Goodwood last time out and wouldn't have her heading the market here, especially with soft ground potentially on the cards.

The sole three year old in the field Pacific Mission comes next in the odds grids and she of course receives weight all round here, but for all Andrew Balding's horses have been coming on for their runs (particularly this season), she was so off the boil at York last time I think this would take a lunge back to form and then a career best would be needed. That is one too many variables for me, so she is on the outer too.

It's anyone's guess what the weather will do tomorrow and whichever site you look to seems to show something different, however I am fairly confident the word soft will at least be in the description and as such the 9/2 about SPARKS FLY has to be taken. She ran a brilliant race from a tricky wide draw in this race last season, rattling home for third, and given we know her favourite race conditions are cut in the ground and prominent tactics, her draw today in stall 2 is much more appealing. She is not getting any younger at six but ran what could emerge as a very smart race indeed at Chester last time out, finishing just two lengths off Lambourn who could secure the Coronation Cup about half an hour after this race concludes.

Laura Pearson is a fearless rider and I am hopeful she will fire this filly out of the gates and attempt to make all, but so long as she at the very least keeps her prominent inside position I cannot see her out of the first three home. Back her each-way if that is your punting style, but she's a confident win-only pick for me to kick off what should be a phenomenal Saturday.

14:40 Epsom - Coronation Cup

A contest worthy of headlining any raceday has in 2026 been moved from Oaks Day on Friday onto Derby Day itself, in the hope of attracting even more fans through the turnstiles on the biggest day of the year down at Epsom. Through the years some of the best horses of all time have tasted Coronation Cup glory and this year's Group 1 looks at first glance to be a shootout between last season's 1-2; Jan Brueghel and CALANDAGAN.

For all there are plenty of reasons the winner from last year can retain his crown, the preeminent one being he is a fantastic racehorse with a wonderful attitude, I have to be with the French raider who following the reversal in this race last year went on to have a stunning 2025, including capping things off as the best rated horse in the world and winning the Japan Cup. He has taken his form to new heights since their last meeting and while there are some who say he will be blunted by the soft ground here should more rain arrive, I am fairly comfortable that he is versatile groundwise.

Watch back last year's race in its entirety and it becomes fairly obvious - to my eye, anyway - that Calandagan would have won were it not for his slow start. Ryan Moore blasted off on Jan Brueghel while Calandagan was caught napping, and with the winning distance just half a length I'm in little doubt the French horse will reverse that all things being equal. He actually got upsides the winner this time last year, but was just outstayed in the final furlong due to the exertions he had been forced into mid-race to make up the ground lost at the start. If he breaks alertly this time around, he can gain vengeance.

The potential fly in the ointment could be Team Ballydoyle's spoiling tactics. They have 2025 Derby hero Lambourn also in the race and while he will live on in history for his exploits here and at the Curragh last campaign, he is no world-beater and not of the level of the top two. He could, however, be used to set a relentless gallop which would bring Jan Brueghel's stamina into play once more. Illinois could also be used for the same tactic by Aidan O'Brien in the hope of making the race pan out perfectly for their leading hope.

Despite these concerns, I am willing to put my faith in 2025's best middle distance horse righting his only wrong from last year here and think Calandagan at odds against is a decent punt. if he starts any better than last season, he wins.

15:15 Epsom - Epsom Dash

If the Derby is the headline act at Epsom, the Dash is the traditional curtain-raiser, a blink and you'll miss it five furlong blast at what is widely regarded as the speediest course in world racing. There will be no track records set on Saturday given the slow ground that's expected but we will undoubtedly see a rapid winner One of my all time favourite flat horses Caspian Prince was a three time winner of this race and all three were down to his awesome gate-speed, and that is something I want in my fancy for 2026.

Democracy Dilemma fits that bill and he has placed form in this race, second two years ago and fourth last season. His draw in three does put me off a touch, however we all know with these real speed balls the draw can be negated as they are effectively just racing themselves until their petrol tank empties! He is as solid as you can ever get in the Dash each-way and won't mind the softness in the ground description, but at a bigger price I am going to chance Robert Cowell's ALMATY STAR.

Renowned for his prowess with sprinters, i was surprised to see Cowell had never won this race but he has a strong hand this year and I loved the all-the-way success of this lad at Yarmouth in mid April, which was the last time we saw him. He showed brilliant speed at the start that day and that is something he has made a bit of a trademark of this campaign. He looks in career best form and I like the profile of a rapid sprinter who seems to find even five furlongs at certain courses too long of a test.

Epsom is all about these speedballs and if he hits the gates as alertly as he can, there won't be many in and around him who can keep up. Whether he lasts home or whether his is the group to be in is in the lap of the gods, but 20/1 was too big to ignore. He has run and flopped here in the past, but he looks revitalised this season and has not been beaten further than two lengths in seven starts, so I fancy he'll be in the frame come the final strides.

Billy Grimshaw has cast his eye through the field and gives his best bet for the Classic here...

Even with the Oaks field cutting up to nine, this should still be a thrilling affair and barring Precise - who was always a doubtful runner - all the main characters stand their ground. Aidan O'Brien has the favourite in Amelia Earhart, Ryan Moore takes the ride, and that alone gives the race a familiar shape given the duo's formidable record so far this season in Classics across Europe. This is not a one-filly contest, however. Legacy Link arrives off a strong Musidora win, Venetian Lace brings 1000 Guineas form (often the race called the best Oaks trial), while Thundering On and Cameo add depth to a race that should expose any filly short on stamina, balance or tactical pace. Epsom rarely gives horses an easy time, and this looks like a race where the best traveller may not necessarily be the strongest finisher.

The obvious starting point is Amelia Earhart, because she has the profile, the trainer and the jockey that naturally command respect in a race like this. Aidan O'Brien has made this Classic his own often enough, and Ryan Moore being on board gives her a clear place at the head of the market. Her Chester win was visually taking, not least because she looked much more professional than she had at times as a juvenile. The hood and blinkers combination suggests there has been a little bit of management involved, but she settled well enough around Chester and saw the race out with purpose. That run put her right into the Oaks picture and it is easy to see why plenty will want her on side.

The concern is whether Chester has slightly flattered her in terms of what this race will demand. Epsom is another left-handed track, but her closest contender that day is missing for this outing after being antepost favourite for a time. The field can become unbalanced coming down the hill, position matters turning in, and anything that has to organise itself late can quickly find the race gone. Amelia Earhart has class, but she is short enough in a race where she still has to prove she can produce the same finish after a much more searching middle section of the race. There's no better jockey for a tricky filly than Moore, but at the prices I can avoid her.

LEGACY LINK makes the most appeal for team Gosden. Her Musidora win at York looked a serious Oaks trial ,because she did not just travel and quicken, she had to dig in and show that she wanted the fight. That always matters at Epsom. Plenty of fillies look brilliant in a steadily-run trial, then come here and get found out when the race asks for stamina, balance and attitude all at once. Legacy Link gives the impression she will improve for stepping up to a mile and a half, and the way she hit the line at York suggested this extra distance is exactly what she wants.

The draw in stall one is interesting. It can be a blessing if she gets away cleanly and holds a position, because Colin Keane should be able to save ground and let the race unfold in front of him. The flip side is that she cannot afford to get buried on the rail if the pace steadies and the wider runners start to roll. That is the tactical challenge, but she looks uncomplicated enough to cope with it. John and Thady Gosden know the type of filly required for this test, and Legacy Link looks as though she has been building towards this exact assignment.

Venetian Lace is another fascinating one at a bigger price. Her 1000 Guineas third gives her some of the strongest raw form in the field, and William Buick is a positive booking, but this is a massive step up in distance that may stretch her too thin. There is a world of difference between staying on over a mile at Newmarket and truly seeing out twelve furlongs at Epsom. If she relaxes, she has the class to run a big race. If she burns even a little bit too much fuel early, the final furlong could be a long one.

Thundering On has a more obvious staying profile and comes here for Joseph O'Brien with a progressive look but although she has a flashy turn of foot, I think in time ten furlongs will be what she wants. Epsom tends to ask for every drop of stamina a filly has. The winner will need to travel, stay balanced, handle the camber and keep finding when the pressure comes on from Tattenham Corner.

The race shape should suit something that can hold a handy position, switch off and then keep lengthening rather than merely quicken for a furlong. That brings me back to Legacy Link. She might not have the most fashionable Classic profile in the race, but she has already shown the right blend of quality and toughness. Amelia Earhart is the obvious danger and may be very good, but I find it hard to split the pair on potential and would argue Legacy Link was more impressive in her trial win, so will take the filly at a much bigger price.

Templegate sides with Legacy Link for John and Thady Gosden, Newsboy is with Thundering On for Joseph O’Brien, while Robin Goodfellow looks to the Diomed Stakes with Ice Max.

Oaks field set for Epsom showdown: The Betfred Oaks is the headline race at 4.00, with Amelia Earhart, Legacy Link and Thundering On all prominent in a fascinating Classic puzzle.
Today’s NAPs Table - Top 3

The NAPs table has a clear leader on Thursday, with It Just Takes Time carrying the strongest level-stakes figure into the 4.42 at Wetherby. Persian Land is next best at Ffos Las after attracting support from one of the leading table positions, while Zigazig Ah gives the evening Lingfield card a notable contender from the top three.

The familiar names are spread across the afternoon cards, with Templegate also siding with the Wetherby table-topper It Just Takes Time. Robin Goodfellow heads to Hamilton for Pearl Eye, while Newsboy is on Recobella later on the same card in what looks a key race for the big-name NAPs.

Racing News Round-Up

Derby field confirmed for Epsom: The final field for Saturday’s Derby has now been declared, with 14 runners set to line up and Aidan O’Brien responsible for four of them. Benvenuto Cellini remains one of the key players, but the draw has added another layer to the puzzle after he was handed a wide stall, while Item, Maltese Cross and Pierre Bonnard all add depth to a fascinating Classic.

Rain changes the Derby Festival picture: Conditions at Epsom have become a major talking point after significant rain eased the ground. That has already had an impact on the Oaks picture, with Precise missing the race, and it could also shape the Derby market as the weekend approaches. Horses with proven stamina and comfort on easier ground are now likely to come under even more scrutiny.

Today’s NAPs Table - Top 3

Matt Polley heads the NAPs table going into Wednesday’s racing and takes a swing at a decent-priced runner in the Ripon finale, with Hurt You Never looking to add another winner to a profitable campaign. West Country is also chasing more leaderboard profit with Best Night at Warwick, while The Brigadier completes today’s top 3 with Modern Style on the same evening card.

The big-name tipsters are spread across the afternoon and evening cards, with Nottingham and Ripon both featuring prominently. Templegate is looking to Safe Harbor at Nottingham, Robin Goodfellow is also on the Nottingham card with Miss U Gino, while Newsboy heads to Ripon with Fantasy Force in the opening race on the evening card.

Racing News Round-Up

Kieran O’Neill set to miss Derby day and Royal Ascot: Kieran O’Neill has been handed a 28-day suspension for whip rule breaches, with the ban ruling him out of Derby day at Epsom and the full Royal Ascot meeting. The suspension is a major blow at one of the busiest points of the Flat season and comes after repeated breaches under the current whip rules.

Epsom ground becoming a major Derby week angle: Rain at Epsom has added another layer to the Classic build-up, with the Derby and Oaks picture now increasingly tied to ground conditions. Proven form with cut in the ground could become more important as the final fields take shape, with the weather forecast likely to stay a key talking point through the week.

Today’s NAPs Table - Top 3

The NAPs table is headed by a strong evening fancy at Newcastle, with Matt Polley siding with Barleybrown in the 20:45. West Country is also in excellent form and puts up Katarcice over jumps at Southwell, while The Brigadier completes today’s leading trio with Finlaggan at Pontefract.

The big newspaper names are focused mainly on Pontefract and Newcastle today. Templegate is looking to Quiet Resolve at Newcastle, where the eight-year-old has a strong course record, while Robin Goodfellow is with the short-priced Alma Latina in the Pontefract opener and Newsboy sides with Liverpool Star later on the same card.

Racing News Round-Up

Derby picture sharpens before final declarations: Derby week is building towards a big Epsom weekend, with Benvenuto Cellini still heading the Ballydoyle challenge after Aidan O’Brien trimmed his squad. Constitution River, Hawk Mountain and Amadeus Mozart are no longer in the Derby mix, while Andrew Balding’s Item remains one of the major home-trained hopes.

Light rain in the forecast at today’s main tracks: Pontefract is racing on ground described as good, good to firm in places, while Southwell is good over jumps and both Newcastle and Wolverhampton are standard on Tapeta. Notable non-runners include Let’s Go Hugo and Bantz at Newcastle, Rosberg and Irish Nectar at Pontefract, Hawk’s Rock and Innisfree Lass at Southwell, plus Thehunnebelllegacy and Ndoto at Wolverhampton.

The NAPs table gives a useful pointer towards which tipsters are carrying the strongest level-stakes form into the day.

The big-name NAPs are focused heavily around Newbury this afternoon, where the card looks one of the main betting heats of the day. Templegate sides with Jellystone Park in the 15:25, while Newsboy is with Naval Tribute in the 16:35 and Robin Goodfellow puts up River King in the 14:50.

Racing News Round-Up

Newbury takes centre stage on Monday: Newbury stages a six-race Flat card this afternoon, with the action running from 14:15 to 17:10. Conditions are set to be quick, with good to firm ground reported, and the 14:50 handicap, 15:25 maiden and 16:35 handicap all feature in today’s big-name NAPs.

Derby week moves into focus: The build-up to Epsom is now gathering pace ahead of Saturday’s Derby, with the Classic picture beginning to sharpen. Ancient Egypt is one of the more interesting contenders being talked up, while the expected royal attendance adds another major storyline to one of the biggest weeks of the Flat season.

The offer is built around one of the simplest markets on the board. Rather than asking punters to pick a winner, back a goalscorer or land a bet builder, Paddy Power only need there to be over 0.5 goals in the match for the enhanced price to click in.

That gives this promotion a much broader feel than some of the more specific bookmaker deals attached to PSG vs Arsenal. Any goal for either side will do, which makes it an easy offer to understand and one that should appeal to punters looking for a straightforward way into the final.

For those comparing PSG vs Arsenal betting offers before the 5pm kick-off, Paddy Power’s 50/1 goal offer stands out because it focuses on the most basic match outcome of all. Read on for the full details, how to claim it and a preview of the final itself.

PSG vs Arsenal Match Preview

PSG vs Arsenal has all the ingredients of a major European final. PSG arrive with a squad packed full of pace and technical quality, while Arsenal have built a side capable of controlling games, creating pressure and producing big moments in the final third. It is a match that should attract huge betting interest from the first whistle.

From the perspective of Paddy Power’s offer, the tactical balance is straightforward. The bet does not depend on which side comes out on top, only on whether the game produces at least one goal. That gives punters a far simpler route into the final than trying to call the outright winner or second-guess a more detailed market.

Both teams have enough weapons to make the goal market relevant. Whether it comes from open play, a fast break or a dead-ball situation, one breakthrough is all that is needed to bring the 50/1 offer home.

Team News

Arsenal are expected to lean on their main attacking names to try to break PSG down in the final.

Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice are likely to be central figures if Arsenal are to create chances in Budapest.

PSG bring plenty of danger in wide and forward areas, giving them several routes to carving out openings.

The French side’s pace in transition could make them especially dangerous if the match opens up.

With both teams carrying attacking quality, the over 0.5 goals market looks a logical one for Paddy Power to build around.

Head-To-Head

There is useful recent history between PSG and Arsenal in European competition, with both sides having enjoyed moments against the other. That adds another layer to the final and reinforces the sense that this should be a competitive contest with chances at both ends.

The offer is available to new Sky Bet customers and focuses on a simple corner market, meaning Arsenal only need to win one corner against PSG for the enhanced odds selection to land.

PSG vs Arsenal is one of the biggest football betting events of the season, and Sky Bet’s Champions League final offer gives punters a clear, easy-to-follow way into the match.

Instead of needing to predict the winner, first goalscorer or correct score, this Sky Bet promotion is built around Arsenal registering at least one corner during the final. Given the Premier League champions have built their season on set pieces

Why Sky Bet’s PSG vs Arsenal Offer Stands Out

Sky Bet’s PSG vs Arsenal offer stands out because it is based on a corner market rather than the match result. Arsenal do not need to win the Champions League final, score a goal or even take control of the game for long periods. They simply need to win one corner at any stage of the match.

That makes the offer easy to understand for new customers. Corners can come from crosses, blocked shots, defensive clearances and sustained pressure, so Arsenal only need one attacking moment to bring the market into play.

The enhanced odds angle also gives the offer a strong headline hook. At 60/1, Sky Bet’s Arsenal over 0.5 corners promotion is likely to appeal to punters looking for a simple boosted odds deal on the Champions League final.

PSG vs Arsenal Betting Offer Focus

The main appeal of this Sky Bet offer is its simplicity. Many Champions League final promotions are built around bet builders, goalscorers or multiple selections, but this one focuses on a single outcome.

Arsenal over 0.5 corners means the Gunners need to win at least one corner during the match. That can happen early or late, and it does not depend on the final score. For punters comparing PSG vs Arsenal betting offers, that makes Sky Bet’s promotion one of the easiest to assess.

The offer is also a natural fit for a match involving Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side often look to build pressure through wide areas, with their attacking players capable of forcing defenders into blocks and clearances. One move down either flank could be enough to win the corner required.

PSG vs Arsenal Match Preview

PSG vs Arsenal brings together two of Europe’s biggest clubs in the Champions League final, with the trophy on the line in Budapest. Arsenal are chasing the biggest prize in European club football, while PSG have another opportunity to underline their status at the top level.

From a betting perspective, this is exactly the type of fixture that attracts a huge range of offers. Match result markets, goalscorer betting, cards, corners and bet builders will all be popular before kick-off, but Sky Bet’s promotion narrows the focus to one Arsenal corner.

That makes the tactical battle especially relevant. Arsenal will need to find ways to move up the pitch, test PSG’s full-backs and create pressure in the final third. If they can force PSG into defending their box, the corner count could quickly become part of the story.

Team News

Arsenal are expected to rely on their wide players like Saka and Martinelli to stretch PSG and create attacking pressure.

Saka again could be central to Arsenal’s route to corners, with his direct running and crossing ability a key weapon down the right.

Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice are likely to be important in helping Arsenal sustain attacks and keep the ball in dangerous areas.

PSG have plenty of pace and technical quality, which could make control of territory a major factor in the final.

Both PSG full backs were listed as doubts but manager Luis Enrique has confirmed both are fit, which is particularly beneficial given Hakimi is arguably the world's best right back.

Head-To-Head

Arsenal and PSG have met several times in European competition, with recent meetings adding extra edge to this Champions League final. PSG had the better of the knockout tie last season, but Arsenal have also shown they can trouble the French side.

PSG vs Arsenal Champions League Final Preview

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain meet in the 2025/26 Champions League final today, Saturday 30 May, with the match taking place at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm UK time, giving punters plenty of time to compare Champions League final free bets and football betting offers before the biggest club game of the season gets underway.

Arsenal arrive in Budapest chasing the first Champions League title in the club’s history, while PSG are looking to defend the trophy after winning the competition last season. Mikel Arteta’s side have built their Premier League winning campaign on defensive control, set-piece strength and the influence of Declan Rice in midfield, with William Saliba and Gabriel giving the Gunners one of the strongest centre-back pairings in Europe. Bukayo Saka remains Arsenal’s obvious attacking outlet on the right, while Viktor Gyökeres gives them a focal point through the middle should he start the game over Kai Havertz.

PSG are a different kind of test. Luis Enrique’s side have moved away from the superstar-heavy model of previous years and now look more balanced, intense and aggressive without the ball. Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué give PSG real pace and one-v-one threat in wide areas, while Vitinha and João Neves are central to the way they control possession and keep attacks moving. Arsenal’s full-backs could have a major say in the outcome, particularly with Ben White ruled out and Jurriën Timber still listed as a doubt.

Team news will be important right up to kick-off. PSG have no confirmed absentees but Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembélé and Lucas Chevalier have all been listed as doubts although they are expected to play. That makes the confirmed team sheets especially important for punters looking at Bet Builder markets, goalscorer bets, cards, corners and in-play betting angles before the final starts. For Arsenal, Madueke is listed as a doubt but should be on the Arsenal bench.

The tactical battle looks likely to come down to whether Arsenal can keep the game structured and limit PSG’s transitions. Arsenal will want Rice, Martin Ødegaard and the midfield unit to protect the centre of the pitch, slow PSG’s wide runners and create enough service for Saka and Gyökeres in the final third. PSG, meanwhile, will try to stretch Arsenal with quick switches of play and force uncomfortable defensive situations for the Gunners’ full-backs.

It has the makings of a tight final rather than a free-scoring shootout, but both teams have enough attacking quality to punish mistakes. Arsenal’s set pieces, PSG’s wide threat and the fitness of key players could all shape the major betting markets before kick-off.

Whether you are betting at a racecourse, in a betting shop, or online, understanding how to complete a betting slip correctly is important.

A properly written betting slip ensures that your bet is accepted and recorded accurately. Horse racing betting can seem complicated to beginners, but once you understand the main parts of the slip, the process becomes straightforward.

How Do You Write a Betting Slip for Different Types of Horse Racing Bets?

If you want to know how to fill out a betting slip for horse racing, our handy five-step guide answers your questions.

Step 1: Write the racecourse and race time

Example: Ascot, 2:30

Step 2: Add the horse name or number

You can put the horse number, e.g. No.4 or write the horse's full name. Horse names are printed on Racing Post displays in shops and displayed on screens. Copy them from there. Add the number and name to be sure. Sometimes horses with similar names contest the same race and can lead to confusion.

Step 3: Choose the bet type

Write the type of bet you want to place:

Win (horse to win race)

Each-way (horse to win or be placed)

Place (place only)

Forecast (predicting the first two finishers)

Tricast (predicting the first three finishers)

Accumulator / multiple (betting on multiple races together)

Note: for bets like forecast, Tricast and accumulator you would need to have written more than one horse and/or race on the slip.

Step 4: Enter your stake clearly

Write your stake, e.g. £10 win or each-way beside the selection and then in the box provided at the bottom include total stake – in the case of a £10 each-way bet, this is £20.

Step 5: Double-check before handing it over

Before giving the slip over the counter, re-check what you have written:

Correct race

Correct horse

Correct stake

What Are the Most Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a Betting Slip?

There are some common mistakes to avoid. It is vitally important that your betting slip is clear, concise and contains the correct information pertaining to your bet.

Legibility: Make sure the handwriting is clear, often punters will use all capital letters.

Accuracy: Always double-check horse names/numbers, race times, and stakes.

Ambiguity: Avoid any unclear instructions that could lead to disputes or a void bet in a case where the bookmakers may misinterpret unclear slips.

Corrections: If you make a mistake, grab another slip and avoid scribbling out mistakes.

Forgetting Details: Don't leave out key details like horse number, race, venue and stake.

How Can You Ensure Your Horse Racing Betting Slip is Always Correct?

A correctly filled betting slip is crucial for successful payouts. Avoiding betting slip mistakes is vital to avoid disappointment. The onus is on you, the punter, to get this information correct. Sometimes, betting shop staff will spot errors but, in the main, they are handling hundreds per day and are unlikely to pick up on errors.

Avoid pitfalls on your physical betting slips by adhering to these simple principles:

Use block capitals

Put the race venue and time at the top

Put the horse name and number below

Put the Price and Stake at the bottom of the slip

Always double check the details when finished

Always use the same format, forging good habits

Ask staff to confirm when processing

The cameras will be broadcasting from Carlisle, Beverley and Chester instead and Billy Grimshaw is on hand with his best bets across the cards...

14:33 Carlisle - Achilles Stakes

The price has been well and truly hammered in already, but I can see the current 3/1 available as I pen this piece looking juicy compared to SP about REDORANGE on his first foray into Listed company. Clive Cox's charge was backed like defeat was out of the question at Windsor last time out, returning 11/8 and never giving his backers a moment's worry off a mark of 100. This looks a sprinter going places and this rearranged Listed contest up in the north east looks tailormade for him. The draw in five is perfect for one who likes to track the pace as William Buick can take his time and decide where he wants his charge to be on the track depending on how quickly some of his rivals go early, so with the most likely pacesetters being Ten Pounds in three and Luna A Inbhir Nis in eight he will be in control.

Starlust's fourth in last year's King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot is the best form on offer here, but that was the last time we saw Ralph Beckett's runner and one suspects this will very much be a cobweb blower to focus on going a few places better back at the Royal Meeting in 2026. Were he cherry ripe for this he'd be the chief threat, but I actually think the aforementioned Ten Pounds is the one to worry about for our pick with first time cheekpieces applied and a return to shorter trips. He is not short of pace and if he gets a bit of a lead could be tough to peg back.

Nevertheless, I trust Buick to do the right thing on board the horse in red hot form and hopefully he is in the prime position for a late thrust to win this Listed contest on his path to bigger and better things in the sprinting world.

15:30 Chester - Virgin Bet Handicap

Just one race from Chester is set to be broadcast by ITV and it is this 7f handicap which has attracted a decent field. With that being said, I am struggling to get away from the claims of favourite SUPIDO for Ian Williams and Billy Loughnane. The young jockey had a whale of a time here recently at the May Meeting, including winning onboard this lad and can continue that winning thread onboard this last time out course and distance winner.

He has four pounds more to carry this time around but was value for further than the winning distance of half a length to my eye, with Loughnane waiting in behind the leading pack for the gap to appear at the cutaway. The gap actually appeared a fraction sooner than I'd wager the jockey anticipated but he had to take it when it was there, and once his mount got through and into the lead he was always doing enough to hold off the closers thrusting on the outside.

There is of course danger in that some would say Supido did not look too straightforward, idling in front and nearly throwing the race away. He could also meet traffic if employing the same tactics as I assume he will use again. However, he had some fantastic form last season and although the rise in the weights could make things tougher, he is still well handicapped on his peak 2025 form and could come on markedly for that reappearance win here just a few weeks ago. He is my Saturday NAP.

The Gosden-trained three-year-old had looked an exciting Royal meeting candidate, but connections are taking a patient approach rather than pushing him straight into that Group 1 assignment.

Ombudsman claims Brigadier Gerard - 4/6 favourite OMBUDSMAN just held off his nearest rival Gethin at Sandown in the big race last night, an impressive performance from both given this was an early season stepping stone and they'll surely improve for fitness next time out.

The Group 1 winner has a penalty to defy and Royal Ascot may well be the bigger target down the line, but he still brings the standout piece of form into this six-runner Group 3. Billy Grimshaw has taken a closer look at the field and believes the favourite remains the one they all have to beat.

Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard Stakes has a habit of telling us a bit more than the bare Group 3 label suggests, and tonight’s renewal has a proper top-of-the-market clash to get stuck into. OMBUDSMAN is the class horse in the race, that much is obvious, but this is not quite as simple as saying the best horse wins. He has a 7lb penalty to carry, Royal Ascot is the bigger target looming large on the horizon, and there is a progressive four-year-old in Gethin waiting to pounce if the favourite is even slightly below concert pitch.

That said, I still find it hard to get away from the favourite He was second in this race last year before developing into a genuine top-level performer, and his profile since then makes him stand out a mile in this field. The Dubai Turf win in March was another reminder that he has both the class and the gears for this sort of trip, and Sandown should suit him well enough provided William Buick can keep him in a comfortable rhythm. The 7lb penalty means he cannot afford to sleepwalk through it, but he sets a standard the others simply have to reach.

Gethin is the interesting one. Owen Burrows has always given the impression he holds this colt in high regard, and his Kempton comeback win suggested there is more to come this season. The switch to Wathnan Racing adds another layer of intrigue, and James Doyle looks a good booking for a horse who should be able to sit handy and make Ombudsman work for it. If there is one in here with the potential to bridge the gap, it is him.

Almeric is not one I would be in a rush to write off, despite the suspicion that softer ground might bring out the best in him. He has already shown smart form at Listed level and his return here last month was not a disaster by any means, but he does need to step forward again. Arabian Light and Bedouin Prince give Charlie Appleby a double hand, though both probably need a career best, while Wimbledon Hawkeye has smart back form but may just need this after a layoff.

The race could get tactical with only six runners, and that is probably the one small concern with the favourite. If it turns into a crawl and sprint, the penalty becomes more of an issue and Gethin’s freshness could make him dangerous. Even so, OMBUDSMAN has the strongest form, the best turn of foot and the look of a horse who can win this without being absolutely cherry-ripe.

Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard evening is the obvious feature, but there are plenty of competitive races elsewhere and the latest NAPs table is headed by Matt Polley, who relies on Brave Hunter in the finale at Sandown.

Today’s NAPs Table - Top 3

The NAPs table has a familiar look at the top, with Matt Polley still leading the way and Farringdon keeping up the pressure in second. Polley’s best bet today is Brave Hunter in the 20:20 at Sandown, while Farringdon heads to Fairyhouse with Mai Dahlia. Ian Gaughran sits third in the standings, although his selection is not showing on the published table at the time of writing.

The big-name newspaper picks are all focused on Sandown this evening, which is no surprise given the strength of the card. Templegate sides with Charlie Appleby and William Buick in the Listed Heron Stakes, Robin Goodfellow goes for Killavia in the opener, and Newsboy is with Gethin in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes.

Ombudsman headlines Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard Stakes: Sandown stages the feature Flat action of the day, with Ombudsman the star name in the 19:12 Brigadier Gerard Stakes. The Group 3 has attracted a six-runner field, with Gethin, Almeric, Arabian Light, Bedouin Prince and Wimbledon Hawkeye also in the line-up.

Sandown card carries Royal Ascot clues: The Brigadier Gerard evening also features the Henry II Stakes and the Listed Heron Stakes, making it one of the more informative midweek cards before Royal Ascot. Talk Of New York is the key name in the Heron Stakes, while the staying division is in focus earlier on the card in the Henry II Stakes.

The NAPs table is always a good place to start on a busy midweek card, and today’s top three features two Beverley runners and a big-priced Kempton pick leading the way.
Away from the table leaders, there are also three familiar names to keep an eye on today.

Richard Hughes row continues after America Queen withdrawal: Richard Hughes and owner Jaber Abdullah have been left furious after America Queen was withdrawn from the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh on veterinary grounds. Hughes insists the filly has an unusual natural gait and says he had taken advice after a similar issue before the Nell Gwyn, with the dispute now creating a major talking point around future British-trained runners heading to Ireland.

Royal Ascot picture shifts as Portcullis misses St James’s Palace Stakes: Portcullis, the unbeaten King Charles and Queen Camilla-owned colt trained by John and Thady Gosden, will not run in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The Frankel colt remains a horse of real potential, but connections are taking a patient approach rather than throwing him straight into one of the meeting’s hottest Group 1 races.

The latest NAPs table has a lively look to it for Tuesday 26 May, with Matt Polley still setting the pace after putting up Thunderous Love at Lingfield. Ian Gaughran is next in with Obsidian Dream at Bath, while Newmarket’s Racing Post representative makes up the top three with Agnes Hathaway, a bigger-priced selection also running at Bath this afternoon.

The national press names are spread across Leicester and Redcar today, with Templegate siding with a Frankel filly on handicap debut, Robin Goodfellow looking to Happy Chandler at Leicester and Newsboy heading to the Redcar finale with Bayraat.

Royal Ascot picture continues to build: Sea Venture has emerged as a possible Chesham Stakes contender after an impressive debut success at Haydock, with that juvenile division starting to take shape ahead of the Royal meeting in June.

Gold Cup uncertainty around Trawlerman: Last year’s Ascot Gold Cup winner Trawlerman is not guaranteed to defend his crown, with connections indicating he has taken longer than expected to come to hand this spring. That adds another layer to the staying division, with Scandinavia and Caballo De Mar among the names prominent in the wider Royal Ascot conversation.

His Newmarket 2000 Guineas second sets a clear standard and I would not be remotely shocked if he simply proves too good for these.

That said, he is not much of a betting proposition at the prices and I am not convinced this is quite the penalty kick the market makes it look. There is one colt in here with enough raw ability, tactical speed and upside to make this interesting if he gets home over the mile.

The most likely winner of the 2026 Irish 2000 Guineas is Gstaad.

He has the best form in the race, he represents the dominant stable and his Newmarket run was a rock-solid Classic effort. He travelled like a good horse, went clear with the winner and pulled nicely away from the pack, with the winner impressively pulling clear of him, so there is no great mystery as to why he is so short in the market here. If he repeats that form at the Curragh, most of these are probably running for second.

There is also a fair chance he improves again. He shaped at Newmarket as though the run would not be lost on him, he stays the mile, and he has already shown he can operate at the top level. Ryan Moore in the saddle is another obvious positive and this has clearly been mapped out as a very winnable Classic from the moment he crossed the line at Newmarket.

But that is also the issue from a betting perspective. Everyone can see it.

At odds-on, I want very few questions to answer, and while Gstaad is very much the right favourite, this is still a Classic on a different track, against a few rivals who have either got excuses, upside, or both. He can win, and probably should win, but I do not want to be taking a short price about him doing so.

Distant Storm is the obvious danger according to the betting, but he has to reverse Newmarket form with Gstaad and that will not beeasy to do. First-time cheekpieces could help, but he still has plenty to find.

Thesecretadversary is not impossible to forgive either because he did far too much too soon at Newmarket and is surely better than that bare run. If he relaxes, he can be involved, but that is a fairly big if in a Classic over a mile and I am not sure he is being missed by the market.

The one I keep coming back to is ALPARSLAN

He is not bombproof. Far from it. He has to prove he stays this mile and that is the obvious hole in the case. His best form has come over seven furlongs, including when making all in the Greenham at Newbury, and this final furlong at the Curragh could ask a very different question of him.

But I liked the way he won that race. He was professional, straightforward and decisive, and he looked like a colt with a proper engine rather than one who just nicked a weak trial from the front. He also has previous Curragh experience, having won at the track last season, and that is a useful little positive in a race where others are either trying to confirm Newmarket form or put a bad run behind them.

What I like most is that he brings a slightly different shape to the race. Gstaad is the proven Group 1 colt, Distant Storm is the solid yardstick and Thesecretadversary is the one who needs to settle better. Alparslan is the one who could still be better than we have seen, provided the mile is within range.

That is the angle.

If he does not stay, we probably know our fate fairly quickly. But if he does, I do not think he should be this sort of price. I fully accept Gstaad may simply win, but at the prices I would rather be with the Greenham winner to give him something to think about.

Billy Grimshaw is back from a week in the sunshine for Britain's heatwave and has a couple of best bets he hopes will leave punters smiling in the sunshine at Haydock...

14:58 Haydock - Sandy Lane Stakes

I live less than ten miles from Haydock and it is currently cracking the flags here in the North West, so I am expecting all traces of soft in the going description to be a distant memory come Saturday afternoon. This race is often a good pointer for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot but is a big prize worth landing in its own right in a Group 2 and as we often see, the speed horses dropping back to this trip after a crack at the Guineas are the ones to side with.

It is often assumed at Haydock that a high draw is advantageous in these sprint contests, but with only eight runners taking their chance I am not about to discount those drawn low if I can find a pace setter amongst them who will drag the rest along. Brussels in stall one has made it before and Five Ways in two is another who doesn't like to wait around, so I am going to wager that pace is more important than draw in this contest and back VENETIAN SUN coming out of stall three.

Karl Burke is a master with this profile of horse and the yard have won two of the last ten renewals of this race. His Starman filly ran well enough for a long way in the 1000 Guineas before the petrol tank, predictably on breeding and run style, emptied. Six lengths was the distance she was beaten, which was no disgrace, but she travelled sweetly into the race and now back over her optimal trip I am expecting this Group 1 winner as a two-year-old to bounce back in style. Her main market rival Division is drawn next door in stall four, but I would have him much closer in price to Coppull, who beat him at Ascot last time, with both sitting nearer the 4/1 mark.

Division may have shaped like the best horse at Ascot, but I still struggle to see why he should be 5/2 here. He should be closer in the betting to Coppull, and his short price only makes Venetian Sun look more attractive at a similar price.

15:30 Haydock - Temple Stakes

Last year's winner MGHEERA has not quite hit the heights since that day, but with the ground set to be good once again and with the same favourable draw in 11 I think she is overpriced each-way to repeat the feat at around 9/1. Her win actually deserves marking up as she had an awkward start that day, which can prove fatal to a horse's chances over five furlongs at any track, and of the first five home she was the only horse who came from off the pace.

I mean no disrespect in claiming her jockey switch from 2025's William Buick to in 2026 Kieran Shoemark is a downgrade, but Shoemark is hardly an untried amateur and providing he can get the mare to break alertly she must have an outstanding chance of at the very least getting us some place returns with our friends at BOYLE Sports offering an extra place. Haydock is not a track with a notable need to be on the speed, but I do fear the favourite Night Raider the most to our chances given his gate speed. If he breaks as quickly as he has in the past and gets into an outright lead, he could be hard to peg back.

Asfoora often takes a run to come to herself and so off the back of her poor showing in the Palace House at Newmarket last time out I'd expect her to be markedly better, but her penalty won't help and the same goes for ten year old Khaadem who has 9st10 to lug around. The old boy runs well whenever he wants these days and is not without a chance if there is a real pace burn up and the race sets up for stalkers, but Mgheera is a standout bet to my eye and probably is my strongest fancy of the day.

Today’s NAPs Table – Top 3

The NAPs table has a familiar competitive look going into Friday’s action, with Matt Polley still leading the way after a profitable spell. His pick comes in the 5.15 at Haydock, while the second-placed Newmarket and third-placed Farringdon both have selections that could shake up the leaderboard if results go their way later today.

The national newspaper tipsters also have their Friday selections in, with Templegate siding with a Haydock runner, Robin Goodfellow heading to Goodwood and Newsboy looking to Bath. Their NAPs add another layer of interest to a day where the afternoon Flat action leads into a busy evening programme.

Venetian Sun set for Sandy Lane Stakes test: Karl Burke says he retains “100% faith” in Venetian Sun as she drops back in trip for Saturday’s Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. The Group 1-winning juvenile disappointed in the 1000 Guineas, but Burke believes the mile stretched her and expects sprinting to bring her back into her comfort zone, with the Commonwealth Cup still firmly on the radar.

Maltese Cross on course for Derby bid: William Haggas has confirmed Maltese Cross is likely to take his chance in the Betfred Derby at Epsom on Saturday 6 June. The Lingfield Derby Trial winner is unbeaten in two starts since stepping up to 10 furlongs, and Haggas says the colt “stays”, has a good mind and is “worth his place” in what he views as an open Classic.

Today’s NAPs Table – Top 3

The NAPs table has a clear shape heading into Thursday’s racing, with Matt Polley sitting top of the pile after a strong start to the current competition. His selection comes at Southwell this evening, while Newmarket and Farringdon also feature in the top three with runners at Southwell and Haydock respectively.

There are also some familiar names to keep an eye on away from the main table, with Templegate, Robin Goodfellow and Newsboy all putting up their best bets for the day. Their selections are spread across Catterick, Haydock and Musselburgh, giving punters a decent mix of afternoon targets.

Racing News Round-Up

Haydock ground could be a major factor: Haydock’s afternoon card is being run on soft ground, which gives the meeting a different complexion and could put the emphasis on proven stamina rather than pure speed. The 15:30 handicap is one race where conditions and draw position may both be worth noting.

Irish Guineas weekend moves into focus: The Curragh’s Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas is now firmly on the horizon, with 13 runners listed for Saturday’s Group 1 over a mile. It adds a proper Classic backdrop to the end of the week as the Flat season continues to build momentum.

Regular winnings are paid in cash, while the enhanced portion of the return is awarded as Free Bet Builder credits. For football fans searching for bookmaker welcome offers, football betting promotions or enhanced odds specials, this deal is one of the standout offers available ahead of the final in Istanbul.

What Is The Paddy Power Freiburg vs Aston Villa 50/1 Offer?

The offer applies to the Match Odds market for Freiburg vs Aston Villa on Wednesday, May 20th. New customers can place up to £1 on Aston Villa to win the match at enhanced 50/1 odds rather than the normal market price.

For the bet to settle as a winner, Aston Villa must win during normal time. Extra time and penalty shootouts are not included for settlement purposes.

Paddy Power’s enhanced odds promotions split the payout into two separate parts:

Winnings at the standard market price are paid as cash

The additional boosted winnings are credited as Free Bet Builders

This is an important distinction, as free bets do not return the original stake with any winnings. Many bettors overlook this when comparing football betting offers and sportsbook sign-up promotions.

How To Claim The Paddy Power Aston Villa Offer

To access the promotion, customers must:

Register a new Paddy Power account

Deposit using an eligible payment method

Place a pre-match single bet of up to £1 on Aston Villa to win in the Match Odds market (90 mins)

Accepted deposit methods include:

Debit Cards

Pay by Bank

Apple Pay

In-play bets

Multiples or accumulators

Existing customers

Any Free Bet Builder rewards credited through the promotion remain valid for 30 days before expiry.

Freiburg vs Aston Villa Match Preview

Aston Villa are strong favourites to win tonight's final after a season where they are already guaranteed Champions League football for next year via their guaranteed fourth or fifth placed position in the Premier League. Freiburg - who finished seventh in the Bundesliga - arrive in Istanbul for the biggest match in their history having never won a major trophy in their 121 year existence.

Villa - who could end a 30 year wait for a major trophy - are 7/10 to win in 90 minutes making this 50/1 offer look extremely generous. They have scored four goals in four of their last eight matches and six of the last eight have featured more than three total goals. Freiburg meanwhile have been pretty free scoring in this competition themselves but have also leaked goals at the other end. Both teams have scored in eight of Freiburg's last nine matches.

This is set up to be an entertaining clash with Villa the side expected to triumph.

Paddy Power Free Bet Builders Explained

The enhanced portion of the winnings is paid as Free Bet Builder credits instead of withdrawable cash.

Bet Builders allow customers to combine multiple selections from the same game into a single wager. Examples include:

Aston Villa to win

Both teams to score

Over 8 match corners

As with most free bet promotions, the free stake itself is not included in the final payout.

The Ipswich Star's Matt Polley maintains his commanding lead in the season-long competition with +£27.71 to level stakes, going in today on Billy Mill in Kempton's 19:30. The Racing Post's Newmarket man sits second on +£15.22 thanks to an 11-8 record with four current non-runners, his pick today being the juvenile Easy Answer at Yarmouth. Farringdon of the Morning Star rounds out the top three on +£14.38 and a current two-NAP winning streak, opposing the favoured runners in the Ayr 15:42 with Degale.

Aidan O'Brien has revealed that his two star three-year old fillies - True Love and Precise - are set to clash in the Irish 1000 Guineas on Sunday giving Ryan Moore a difficult choice on which one to ride.

The Gambling Commission is expected to sign off on the introduction of controversial affordability checks for punters this week.

The BHA are calling for extra vigilence from trainers as the Equine Flu outbreak continues to spread around Britain. No cases have yet been found in a racing yard.
