We kick things off with a bang with the Juddmonte International the highlight of a stacked Wednesday card and as well as a full preview of the feature race, embedded on this page, Billy Grimshaw has two additional bets to hopefully kick the week off in perfect fashion.

13:50 York - Heritage Handicap

A blink and you'll miss it handicap over five kicks things off for another year's Ebor festival, and as always the best bit of advice when punting in these races is to tread lightly. Th draw is always a huge factor and as this is race 1, we are guessing a touch as to where it will be optimal to be drawn, but I am going to judge this race on the basis the lower drawn horses will have a slight advantage. One thing I definitely want here over this course and distance is a prominent racer, and while he may not be a bona fide frontrunner like Dark Thirty, who I imagine will lead his group from stall 13, I like TOCA MADERA to get a deserved slice of revenge for his hopelessly luckless run in the Steward's Cup last time out.

To say he met traffic at Goodwood would be one of the understatements of the year, but once Saffie Osborne did finally get a gap his progress was eye-catching and one suspects if he'd have been a bit more prominent, as he usually is, he'd have got even closer than fifth. Danny Tudhope takes over in the saddle and I would be amazed if he is not quick from the stalls to try and get a leading position in the low drawn crew of horses. Should he get a nice position I have no worries over his stamina on this ground and over this trip, and with the finishing kick he showed at Goodwood he can show the field a clean pair of heels.

We of course could see him win his group and finish out of the money, but hopefully that doesn't happen and we at least scoop some each-way returns. Favourite The Man scares me the most - unsurprisingly as he is the only horse shorter than our lad - given he was second in the race last season and looks in better nick this time around, but I do believe Toca Madera is the most talented in here and if he doesn't hit traffic as he did at Goodwood, he can come home in front.

15:00 York - Great Voltigeur Stakes

I cannot wait to see the three way clash between Christmas Day, Pierre Bonaud and Maltese Cross here. I was struggling to split all three, but 11/4 on the Derby winner and 3/1 on the "second string" for O'Brien versus 2/1 for the Derby second makes it an easier choice than I'd anticipated. Over perhaps the past five seasons there has been a cliche which has almost eaten itself; William Haggas likes winners at York. It is true, of course, and he does have a fine record here, but you could bring any trainer form stat you like to any course of your choosing and if you're using it as a reason to back against an Aidan O'Brien, I'll take you on. I feel the odds compilers have fallen into the Haggas York trap too deep here, and will gladly be on the other side of that argument.

Christmas Day's win at Epsom has had stones thrown at it for being on soft ground, but he did very little wrong in the Irish Derby when a few lengths off the ultra impressive winner - who'd be odds-on in here. He finished up an always closing half length ahead of Pierre Bonaud off levels that day, but now has to give away five pounds. Ryan Moore is on Christmas Day, however I wonder how much of that has been dictated to him by the powers that be. It is hard to watch the Curragh Classic and think Pierre Bonaud would not have finished ahead if given 5lbs, and with Wayne Lordan's mount potentially being better suited by the going here he is the one to be with.

PIERRE BONAUD did have a slightly easier task at the Curragh in that he had cover while Christmas Day was left out as a sitting duck for Benvenuto Cellini to reel in, however the duo looked to be really battling in the final furlong and it was Bonaud who was gaining with every stride. There is a fag paper between them, I suspect, and so with the weight swing I'll back Lordan to again come out on top this season in his battles with Moore.

Nine have been declared for the £1.5 million Group 1 over a mile and a quarter, and while there are credible dangers elsewhere, the market has understandably concentrated on the big two. Billy Grimshaw breaks down the race for us here and gives his best bet...

Ombudsman arrives as the established champion, officially rated 132 and unbeaten in three starts this year, while CONSTITUTION RIVER has won five on the spin and gets the crucial 7lb weight-for-age allowance. Add in York specialist Item, Group 1 winner Almaqam and a couple of likely pacemakers, and we should get a proper test. I am siding with the younger horse to take the next step and announce himself as the new star of the middle-distance division. This time of year, those weight allowances matter more and more.

The favourite is difficult to oppose on bare form. John and Thady Gosden’s five-year-old won this race 12 months ago and has returned even better in 2026, winning all three starts and producing a career-best display when slamming his rivals by four lengths in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. He is officially rated 132, has already proved that York, this trip and top-level pressure hold no fears, and William Buick knows him inside out. Devil’s Advocate should ensure there is enough pace for him to settle and use that long, relentless finishing run. There is very little not to like.

The issue is simply the price and the presence of what could be a superstar opponent in Constitution River. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old has looked more impressive every time we have seen him this season. He overcame a poor draw to win the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and then took another major leap forward in the Eclipse at Sandown, powering three lengths clear in his first clash with older horses. That made it five consecutive victories and there is still a strong feeling that we have not seen his ceiling. His official rating of 124 leaves him 8lb shy of Ombudsman, but he receives 7lb here, which effectively brings them almost level before we even consider further improvement. At around 13/8 against roughly 11/10 for Ombudsman, I would rather have the improving three-year-old on my side.

The pace should make this a proper race. Action looks likely to ensure a genuine gallop for the Ballydoyle number one, while Devil’s Advocate performs a similar role for Ombudsman. That reduces the chance of the contest turning into a sprint and should make this a true test over York’s extended mile and a quarter. Constitution River has already shown he can travel strongly off a good pace before quickening, and Ryan Moore should be able to get him into a comfortable rhythm from stall seven. If the leaders overdo it, the race could set up beautifully for both market principals, and the question will be which has the sharper finishing gear late on.

Item is the obvious third horse in. Andrew Balding’s colt has an excellent York record, having won the Dante over this course and distance in May before bouncing back from a disappointing Derby run to beat Pride Of Arras in the Sky Bet Stakes here last month. His ninth at Epsom came on soft ground over a mile and a half, and at a course that doesn't always correlate to the Knavesmire, so I am happy to forgive it. Back on a flat track, on good ground and over what looks his optimum distance, he is a serious rival. His official mark of 122 puts him only 2lb behind Constitution River and he receives the same weight-for-age allowance from Ombudsman. At around 7/1 he is the one I would want if looking beyond the front two, but he still needs to improve again against two horses who have already produced elite Group 1 performances.

Almaqam has already won at the top level this season, taking the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, but Ombudsman put him firmly in his place at Royal Ascot and it is difficult to see why that form should be reversed on good ground. He would become more interesting if the forecast rain turned the surface significantly softer. Hawk Mountain has twice finished behind Constitution River this summer and, while high class in his own right, the evidence suggests his stablemate has his measure. Pride Of Arras loves York and ran well behind Item last time but has plenty to find on ratings. Zaydann is perhaps the most intriguing outsider after winning five races in a row, yet he is jumping from Group 3 company into a contest containing two of the best middle-distance horses in Europe.

For me, then, it comes down to Ombudsman against Constitution River. Ombudsman is the safer proposition and nobody could argue with anyone taking odds-against about a defending champion rated 132 and arriving unbeaten this season. But betting is about price as much as probability, and I think the market is giving the younger horse slightly less respect than his chance deserves. Constitution River is already a dual Group 1 winner, receives 7lb, has improved with every run this year and may still have another chunk of progression to come. York’s long straight should suit him, the likely strong pace should suit him and Ryan Moore can sit wherever he wants without needing to manufacture the race.

If Ombudsman reproduces his Royal Ascot demolition job he could simply be too good, but Constitution River does not need to find much more to make the weight concession decisive. At around 13/8, I am happy to take that chance. CONSTITUTION RIVER is my selection to beat Ombudsman in what could be one of the races of the season.

Lingfield, Catterick and Windsor share the big-name attention on Monday, with Templegate siding with Le Rouge Chinois in the 15:30 at Lingfield. Robin Goodfellow puts up Runninsonofagun in Catterick’s 16:45, while Newsboy is with Magic Effort in the 18:25 at Windsor.

York Ebor Festival build-up intensifies: The Juddmonte International market has had a major shake-up, with Delacroix drifting, Whirl shortening sharply and Ombudsman now prominent before Wednesday’s Group 1 feature.

Nunthorpe Stakes field takes shape: Lady Iman, Spicy Marg and Rumstar have been supplemented for Friday’s Group 1 sprint at York, adding extra depth to a field already set to feature Arizona Blaze, Asfoora and several other leading speedsters.

Good luck if you are following and remember to check out our betting offers page for the latest free bets and bonuses from the top online bookies.

13:25 Newbury - Geoffrey Freer Stakes

Kicking us off with a bang, the Geoffrey Freer Stakes looks a rip-roaring affair at Newbury and the race probably revolves around whether Dubai Honour is primed and ready for this reappearance. We know the Haggas globe trotter will have his eyes fixed on prizes Down Under and beyond later in this season, but he may only need to be at 80% to win here. I am not sure, however, that he will be at that level given he is set to take part in the Group 1 Irish Leger in under a month's time and as such, I want to take him on with one who looks fairly unexposed.

Six of the last ten winners of this race have been three years old and this is usually the time of the season when the "Classic Generation" start to make hay over their older rivals and as such I am going to side with Faye Bramley's REBEL ROCKER to cause a bit of a surprise. He receives 10lbs from his older rivals and a huge 13lbs from the penalised Mount Atlas, who I fancy will be beaten by Tabletalk given that penalty and the fact he only beat that rival a head last time out, but Rebel Rocker off a break could be dangerous given how excellent his Derby run in the wet looked.

He is value for better than that run, too, as at stages he really did look unhappy both on the soft ground and on the Epsom undulations, yet still he plugged on for sixth doing all his best work late. This step up in trip should hold no fears for him and while Dubai Honour obviously sets the standard, I wonder if Bramley's charge may well be sent on and try to get the rest of them chasing him with the weight perhaps proving decisive. He is by no means my strongest play of the day, but 12/1 is overpriced and 2 places each-way is tempting enough.

15:25 Ripon - Great St Wilfrid Stakes

Ripon's big race of the season has attracted a slightly smaller than usual field of 15 but it looks as competitive a renewal as ever and I am hoping those drawn high make hay. There is pace almost everywhere across the track here, with It Just Takes Time presumably the one who will blast off and lead the lower drawn group while I'd be surprised if anything went quick enough early to take the high drawn pace from I'm Next. Whether either will last home is a different discussion, however, and neither are my selection.

Favourite Fast Track Harry is drawn slap bang in the middle in stall eight and so will be able to choose which group to latch onto, presumably the higher drawn crowd given the usual bias here. He has an obvious chance for Clive Cox but with the race this deep I am willing to swerve him at 11/2 or shorter, for all his Ascot run last time out off the same mark was a step in the right direction. I am against Dark Cloud Rising as he looked a spent force at Goodwood when just clinging on for second and I think if they go hard here he could once again wilt when the going gets tough, but drawn next to him is KODIAC THRILLER and he makes much more appeal each-way at around the 17/2 mark.

The five year old looks to be in career best form, exemplified by his gutsy York handicap win last time out, and for all he is stepping up in class here he looks a tough nut to crack and will almost certainly stay right to the line. He and Dark Cloud Rising both like to get on with things but while I am doubtful the shorter priced runner will relish a battle should one ensue, I have no such doubts about this lad and he is a sporting bet in the big betting race of the day.

Windsor is the main focus for Templegate and Newsboy on Thursday, with both putting up A Major Payne in the 19:41 handicap. Robin Goodfellow’s best bet comes earlier at Beverley, where Ventura Express lines up in the 15:45 sprint.

Racing News Round-Up

A Major Payne a shared Windsor headline: Templegate and Newsboy both NAP the Michael Bell-trained runner in the 19:41 RIP Susan Procter Memorial Handicap, an eight-runner 1m2f contest on good-to-firm ground.

Beverley sprint looks the standout afternoon betting race: Robin Goodfellow’s Ventura Express lines up in the 15:45 Connexin Super Fast Sprint Handicap, a 12-runner 5f contest on quick ground where pace and draw should be important.

Willie Mullins sparks York Ebor gamble: Love Me Tender has been cut sharply for the £500,000 York handicap after Mullins identified the German-bred gelding as one to watch, though punters have had to be careful as the trainer has two horses with the same name.

Hamilton feature shaped by El Matador absence: The 19:00 Kinrara Distillery Scottish Trophy Handicap has lost El Matador, leaving Return To Unit towards the head of the betting and NAPs Table third Dwindling Funds among the key contenders.

Moulin Booj leads Nottingham sprint market: Newsboy’s NAP is prominent in the betting for the 19:45 Oddschecker+ Subscription Service Handicap, with the George Scott runner taking on Grandlad, Michaelas Boy and Mesaafi in a seven-runner 5f contest.

Ryan Moore shines on Shergar Cup return: Moore was crowned top jockey on his first Shergar Cup appearance in 20 years, with Great Britain and Ireland winning Saturday’s team competition at Ascot.

It divides racing fans, but always attracts a good Ascot crowd and is the centrepiece of Saturday's ITV Racing coverage. Billy Grimshaw has two betting tips on the card.

13:35 Ascot - Shergar Cup Dash

A typically competitive affair in the Dash kicks off Shergar Cup Day and the one I want to side with is making a quickfire reappearance from an admittedly poor prep run at Glorious Goodwood last time out, FANDOM. Ascot is notoriously one of the stiffest flat track finishes in Britain and as such over this minimum trip I want a horse that will be held onto and smuggled into contention, and this lad fits the bill. That was what it looked like he attempted to do at Goodwood in the Stewards Cup but never got going over a trip that stretched him a smidgen and he was certainly not given a hard time when out of contention, perhaps with this race in mind.

Prior to that run he came third here in a heritage handicap and I think there's potential he was value for a place or two better, given he was ridden more prominently than he usually is. Suraj Narredu is not a jockey I am an expert on, truth be told, but he is experienced over in India and Richard Hannon will I've no doubt instruct him to hold onto his charge for as long as he dares before mounting a late challenge. He did of course win a race at the Shergar Cup last year, becoming the first Indian to do so as Team Asia won the Cup. This year, he represents Rest Of World.

There are tonnes of dangers in here, none more so than favourite Bolo Neighs for Ralph Beckett who should also be played late, but the 7/1 about Fandom looks generous at the time of writing and he can go well to kick us off.

15:20 Ascot - Shergar Cup Sprint

It's tough to have a banker at a meeting as unique as the Shergar Cup, but if there is one on the card then surely it is THUNDER CALL in this. William Haggas's charge will be ridden by Jerry Chau for team Hong Kong and like with my earlier tip in the Dash, I am hunting here for a hold up horse to swoop late. Haggas's runner looks the obvious candidate. When we last saw him he was strong in the market at Newmarket but only managed third place, which will have disappointed his backers. However, looking back analytically there was absolutely nothing wrong with that run and he was simply the victim of circumstance.

That day at Newmarket there was a definite pace bias for those making the running - the winner of Thunder Call's race did just that with the eventual second always sitting prominently too. Thunder Call was the only horse held up who made any sort of inroads on the leaders and can be marked up heavily for that performance. This is undoubtedly a better horse than a mark of 91 suggests and providing Chau does not twitch too soon I believe he should win this race cosily enough. It is not essential to be drawn high, but it is advantageous in this race over the years so his draw in 11 is another positive and he'll be my biggest bet of the day.

Kempton, Yarmouth and Pontefract share the big-name attention on Wednesday, with Templegate siding with Desert Belle in the Kempton finale. Robin Goodfellow puts up Troublesome Guest at Yarmouth, while Newsboy is with Betweenthesticks in Pontefract’s 16:15.

Jockey Club exit raises governance stakes: The Jockey Club will leave the Racecourse Association at the end of 2026, joining Ascot in stepping away from the body and increasing pressure on British racing’s governance structure.

Shadwell unlikely to directly replace Jim Crowley: After Crowley’s retirement from the saddle, Shadwell are not expected to appoint a new retained rider and are set to continue using the best available jockeys alongside individual trainers.

Shadwell unlikely to replace Jim Crowley with a new retained rider: After Crowley’s immediate retirement following his long injury battle, Shadwell are expected to keep using the best available jockeys rather than appointing a direct successor.

Nottingham is the main focus for several of the familiar newspaper names on Monday, with Templegate siding with Moonlit Surf in the 14:40.
Fantastic Four Timer For Murphy - Oisin Murphy stole the headlines at Chester yesterday with four winners from six races. The highlight was just getting Simplify up in the dying strides at a tasty price.

The 15:54 Wilmot-Smith Memorial Handicap is one of the day’s stronger betting races - Dark Cloud Rising, Commanche Falls, Lord Roxby and Saint Lawrence among the key names in a competitive sprint.

After a profitable week, Billy Grimshaw has three selections across the televised races.

Good luck if you are following and remember to check out our betting offers page for the latest free bets and bonuses from the top online bookies.

Newmarket 13:33 - British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed Race)

The opening contest on ITV Racing is a competitive 1m 4f Listed Race for Fillies and Mares. Championship chasing jockey, Billy Loughnane, comes to the July course over Goodwood and has a favourite's chance in the first via Romantic Symphony for Charlie Appleby who has won 2 of the last 5 runnings of the race. The concern with her is the fast ground so I'm passing her over for a rock solid alternative in the form of ORIONIS for William Haggas. The four-year-old produced a career best effort when 3rd - beaten 2 lengths in a Listed event - over course and distance last time on ground that will be similar to what she'll face here. Still progressing, I think it'll be tough to keep this daughter of Sea The Stars out of the places so she looks a rock solid each-way bet at around 6/1.

Thirsk 14:08 - William Hill Summer Cup Handicap

Similar to my first selection, I'm putting up another rock solid each way bet in the big race of the day at Thirsk. NORTHERN EXPRESS is the oldest horse in the field and, after winning a competitive handicap at York a few weeks ago, he could be ready to go in again off just a 2lb higher mark. The eight-year-old - rated 106 at his peak - is joint top weight for this off a mark of 97 so he still remains very well treated on old form. Adaptable in terms of ground and a course and distance winner, he looks sure to be in the shake up and with bookies paying four places, he looks well worth backing each-way.

Goodwood 14:25 - Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3)

Perhaps the most obvious selection of the day is AL AASY in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood - a race he has won for the last two years. He may now be a nine year old but he showed he retains plenty of ability when winning at odds-on, down in grade to Listed level, at Beverley last time - eased in the closing stages. He is an enigmatic type and not always the most straight forward to ride but with Tom Marquand in the saddle at a course he clearly loves, he can outclass his rivals to bring up the hat-trick. 9/4 seems a very fair price.

The Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is the highlight, but there is competitive racing throughout, with five races live on ITV.

We have selections in three of those ITV races to follow below. Make sure to check our betting offers page for the latest free bets and offers too.

Goodwood 13:50 - Coral Goodwood Handicap

One who looks capable of improving even further over a marathon distance is ST MAWES for George Scott. His trainer is in excellent form and he himself has proved very consistent over staying trips. Back-to-back wins arrived to conclude 2025, both over 2m, at Kempton and Nottingham. Both his runs this season have come at this track, with the Wootton Bassett gelding finishing third and second respectively. He has seen the trip out strongly both times and is well worth a go up another half-mile. He was more than eight lengths clear of the third when runner-up last time and may excel from a low weight in this company. 2m4f promises to suit him well.

Goodwood 15:00 - Coral Golden Mile

In superb form, INDALO can continue on an upward curve for Roger Varian. He was fourth at this meeting last season over 1m1f, faltering late on. However, he has improved no end since over 1m. A win at Southwell preceded a nose second in the Cambridgeshire, but despite going up 9lb, he has reached another level. Another close second came on his return at Newbury before a superb third from the wrong side of the track in the Royal Hunt Cup. Indalo finally earned a well-deserved triumph with victory at Sandown last time despite hanging late on. That win came recently enough that he is only up 3lb in the handicap, but he surely hasn't finished improving and can claim another top handicap.

Goodwood 16:10 - Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes

Race conditions suit both Galen and Haatem, but neither is a prolific winner. JONQUIL is far less consistent, but when he is on, he tends to win. That was the case on return at Ascot, while he also won the Group 2 Celebration Mile at this track last season. In both races, he has arrived from the back of the field with a burst, suggesting he will eventually run and be successful over further. He is chanced over an extra furlong here having disappointed the last twice. Unusually, he has started to race too keenly, but there is enough pace in here and racing round a bend may also help him settle. He has been at his best with something to aim at, which will be the case here.

ITV Racing are showing the first five races on the card and - after picking three winners from three selections yesterday - we've found three best bets for the televised action.

Read on to find out about three Goodwood selections and remember to check out our betting offers page to see the latest free bets and offers.

Goodwood 13:50 - Coral Kincsem Heritage Handicap

Goodwood can be a tricky track for some horses so I'm siding with the three-year-old with course form in the book in this opening race of the day. CIARRAI ABU has run two of his five races at the Sussex track including his maiden victory back in May. He followed that up with a solid fourth placed finish back at Goodwood in June - not getting the best of runs before running on strongly at the finish and last time out he won a decent Ascot Handicap off a 6lb lower mark than he holds today. The extra furlong of this contest can bring out a bit more improvement and this progressive sort looks worth backing at about 5/1.

Goodwood 14:25 - Markel Richmond Stakes (Group 2)

Flann Sunna steps up in class to put his unbeaten record on the line in The Richmond but at 15/8 he looks plenty short enough in the market to triumph in this Group 2 contest. The pick of the alternatives all ran in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot with Adaay Of Scarlet (2nd) finishing ahead of Cut A Dash (4th) and Night In Vegas (5th). Adaay Of Scarlet has been out since finishing second of three in the July Stakes and I fancy CUT A DASH to reverse the Ascot form. The son of Starspangledbanner was a really impressive winner on debut at York before that respectable performance at the Royal Meeting and he looks open to plenty of improvement. At around 7/2 he's a value alternative to the favourite.

Goodwood 16:10 - Buccellati Handicap

MISS YECHANCE has plenty of miles on the clock already for a three-year-old and she can put that experience to good use in this final ITV televised race of the day. The winner of a valuable 5 furlong turf handicap at Meydan in January, she returned to the UK - switching to the Karl Burke stable - and finished 7th of 27 in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap at the Royal Meeting. She perhaps got going too early that day and raced in what proved to be an unfavourable part of the track so it would be no surprise if she came on plenty for that run. In a wide open race and with bookies paying five places, she rates a fair each way bet at around 8/1.

Once again, ITV Racing are showing the opening five races on the card so we've examined the fields and picked out three best bets.

Good luck if you decide to follow and remember to check out our betting offers page to see the latest free bets and offers available at Goodwood.

Goodwood 13:50 - Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap

Al Shaqab Racing hold a very strong hand in this opening race with Hatteen - trained by Andrew Balding - and Cannes (Joseph O'Brien) topping the market at 2/1 and 3/1 respectively. They are both respected but the horse who could be well ahead of his current mark is the William Haggas-trained IFRAAD. He won a 1m2f Novice Stakes by over 6 lengths at Pontefract at the end of April and then hit plenty of bad luck in running at Chester last time out doing well to finish 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner. He races off the same mark today which could bely his talent and with Tom Marquand back in the saddle (1 from 1 on the horse) he rates the pick at around 7/2.

Goodwood 15:35 - Veuve Clicquot Molecomb Stakes (Group 3)

Richard Hannon has a good recent record in the Molecomb with two wins (Trillium and Armor) in the last five runnings. He saddles the favourite PERSHAADA who began her Turf career with a C&D win in late May running on well over 5 furlongs to score by 1 1/4 lengths. She went on to finish fourth next time in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot finishing one place ahead of the reopposing Crownbreaker who has gone on to win a Listed race since in France. The negative is that she's been backed from 7/1 into 4/1 since the markets opened but she's still just about a bet at those odds.

Goodwood 16:10 - Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes (Group 1)

Always one of the most eagerly anticapated races of the week, the Sussex Stakes sees the three-year-olds take on the older horses over a 1 mile trip. This season, the top three-year-old is BOW ECHO who remains unbeaten after five runs including the St James's Palace Stakes and the 2000 Guineas the last twice. George Boughey's superstar will need to cope with the fast downhill finish but he's coped with everything that has been put in front of him so far and with the 8lb weight-for-age allowance, he looks very much the one to beat here.

ITV Racing is showing the first five races on the card and we have found three selections to back across those five races.

Goodwood 14:25: Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2)

Today's opening race looks extremely difficult so our first selection comes in the second race on the card - the Group 2 Vintage Stakes - where I can't see past the favourite AL HUDAIBA. The Charlie Appleby-trained grey has won 3 of his 4 starts including a short head victory over Abraham Lincoln in the Superlative Stakes (Group 2) at Newmarket last time. He has a 3lb penalty to carry for that success but this two-year-old could be heading to the very top and, at around 7/4, he looks well worth backing.

Goodwood 15:00 - HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2)

There is an even shorter priced favourite set to go to post in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes but - at around even money - I'm keen to pass on Lake Forest in favour of the second favourite QIRAT who is trading at around 9/2 and will be seen by many as an each-way bet to nothing if all eight go to post. The Ralph Beckett-trained five year old sprung a 150/1 shock to win the Sussex Stakes at this meeting last year - his third win from three visits to Goodwood. He arrives on the back of a win at York so everything looks good for another profitable visit to the Sussex track.

Goodwood 15:35 - Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1)

A Goodwood Cup to savour and one that should be an epic battle between the top two in the market - Scandinavia and Trawlerman. SCANDINAVIA won this race last year and arrives on a six race winning run that includes a head victory over Trawlerman in a tremendous Ascot Gold Cup last time. The 2025 St Leger winner has youth on his side and an uncanny ability to grind his opponents down at the finish. He rates a very worthy favourite at around even money and I expect him to cement his status as the world's best stayer.

Billy Grimshaw is keeping his powder dry for the most part, enjoying the racing without skin in the game in most races, but does have a couple of fancies and makes the case below...

14:00 York - Sky Bet Dash

There are bundles in here with chances, as you'd expect in a Dash with 22 runners on the Knavesmire, and I was drawn to last year's fifth Pocklington - beaten under a length in a bunched finish and arguably in better form this season. His trainer Geoff Oldroyd has two with great chances in here, but I'd rather have Pocklington on side than Air Force One given he has the favourable low draw and is comfortable either taking a lead or making it and were he not five pounds higher in the weights than last season here I'd probably make him the pick. My issue is I am not sure he has as much improvement in him as one other specific runner and potentially a few younger types in here. Air Force One is also drawn low which should be a plus and should relish returning up to six furlongs, but has a less consistent profile than his stablemate.

Red Spells Danger for Tim Easterby is the one in here who could blow the race apart, receiving weight form plenty as a three year old and looking markedly progressive in each of his last three starts. He has only managed second and fourth but I'd argue that fourth was his best run yet and he is a huge danger to my pick, at a bigger price than I expected, MUSICAL TOUCH for the Faheys.

He was last seen winning here off a four pound lower mark, but the length winning distance does not tell the story of how well he put that race to bed and I can see this five year old improving again now with a 3lbs claimer on his back rather than the 7lbs claimer who perhaps switched him a touch early last time out. It mattered not as he was the best horse in the race, but he looks progressive even as a five year old and with course form so crucial at York, I am willing to chance him at around 12/1 in the hope there is enough pace from his high draw. Perhaps his draw is the reason for his price, but I'd have him closer to 8/1 so will hoover up the discrepancy.

15:35 Ascot - King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes

This is a phenomenal renewal of the King George and perhaps the best we have seen since the turn of the century, a claim I don't make lightly. Dual Derby winner Lambourn being available to back at triple figures is testament to that, albeit one suspects he is in here to make the pace for his more well fancied stablemates Benvenuto Cellini and Minnie Hauk. There has not been much confidence in the antepost market in the former, despite his brilliant Irish Derby success last time out while the filly has steadily been backed into a similar price as the three year old colt. Both could be in the mix up, however I feel they will find at least a couple too good and that couple will come from France and Japan respectively.

Kalpana lost nothing in a hot renewal of the Hardwicke here last time out and on that run has the beating of Goliath, but again I don't think those two are in the league of the duo I fear and - predictably - the market thinks will fight out the finish. Masquerade Ball is not a horse I am an expert on but his form in Asia is rock solid, last time out just a length off the ultra impressive Romantic Warrior. I think the way this race is set to pan out, given Lambourn is almost certain to make it a test, will suit this fast finishing Japanese raider and he will almost certainly come there cruising. His issue, however, will be there'll be another horse being wound up from the back next to him who may just outbattle him at the line.

That horse is of course the favourite CALANDAGAN, a brilliant racehorse who is tarred as a poor traveller across the Channel by some British racing fans but unfairly so. All his best form is on quick ground and every time he has ventured to these shores he has been tasked with winning with soft in the description. He will not have that obstacle to overcome on Saturday, mercifully, and I am banking on this being his breakout British performance. Make no mistake, this is a gelding out of the very top drawer in racing history and it would be a crying shame if he never showed his true ability in Britain. He has the race conditions, the ground and the draw to do just that on Saturday and I cannot wait to roar him home as he begins his trademark last to first move,

British Classic races explained

A vital part of the Flat racing calendar, the Classics are some of the most valuable and prestigious races throughout the season. Winning them is very important to the sport as a whole because colts and fillies instantly become more valuable at stud.

These races are as valuable to the sport of horse racing as the majors are in sports such as golf or tennis and are vital in ensuring the longevity of racing.

Here we explain what the Classics are, where they are run and what happens if a horse wins three of them.

What is a Classic?

A Classic is one of a set of five Group 1 races throughout the season which are open only to three-year-olds and are some of the most historic and well known events in the world. They have been collectively referred to as the Classics since 1815.

These races help to establish the best horses of the generation and winning a Classic greatly increases a horse's status. It’s worth noting that there are other Group 1s open exclusively to three-year-olds but there are only five which are considered to be Classics.

Run over various distances, the first two of the season are run over a mile on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, with the next two run over 1m4f at Epsom Downs and the final one takes place at Doncaster over an extended 1m6f towards the end of the season in September.

The Classics - 2000 Guineas

First up is the 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. The former is exclusively for colts and fillies, although you don’t tend to get too many fillies running in it as they have their own version, the 1000 Guineas, in which colts aren’t allowed to run. The colts’ version was first run in 1809 and the fillies only race was established five years later.

Run over a mile, many winners of the 2000 Guineas go on to compete in races like the St. James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes or the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

The Great Frankel is probably the most famous winner of the 2000 Guineas in the last couple of decades. This Henry Cecil-trained colt won by a wide margin and went on to become one of the all-time greats, remaining unbeaten throughout his career.

Gem Robinson holds the record for most 2000 Guineas wins for a jockey, with nine successes between 1825 and 1848. Aidan O’Brien holds the record for trainers with his 10 victories and he should be adding to that before he heads into retirement.

The Classics - 1000 Guineas

The 1000 Guineas was first run in 1814 and some truly iconic fillies have won this race over the years. Winners tend to run in races like the Coronation Stakes, Matron Stakes or Falmouth Stakes if sticking to a mile and not going up or down in trip afterwards.

Oh So Sharp, Minding and Winter and Finsceal Beo are some of the most successful winners of the race. The first filly in that list is perhaps the most significant, as she landed the Triple Crown in 1985, which you can find out more about later.

Jockey George Fordham won the 1000 Guineas seven times between 1859 and 1883 and that record stands to this day. Robert Robson is the race’s winning-most trainer to date with nine successes which all came in a short period between 1818 and 1827.

The Classics - Derby

We head to the Epsom Downs in Surrey for the next British Classics of the season and the Oaks and the Derby are the ultimate test of a racehorse. The undulating track does its best to unbalance horses so those who can come out on top have truly earned the right.

Aristocrat and leading owner/breeder Sir Charles Bunbury played a key role in the establishment of the Derby, as well as the 2000 Guineas, and the race was first run in 1780. Run over 1m4f, the best middle-distance three-year-olds get to take each other on.

Legendary jockey Lester Piggott won the race nine times during a stellar career and will always be associated with the Derby. Aidan O’Brien makes another appearance, winning it a whopping 12 times in total, including each of the last four renewals.

Shergar is probably the most iconic Derby winner and he still holds the record for the widest margin win. Galileo went on to become arguably the greatest sire of all time after winning in 2001 and Sea The Stars’ 2009 success catapulted him onto an excellent career.

The Classics - Oaks

Epsom’s Oaks is only open to three-year-old fillies and is actually a year older than the Derby, which is considered to be the more iconic of the two. It’s named after an estate to the east of Epsom which was leased to the Earl Of Derby, who owned the first ever winner.

The 1000 Guineas tends to be a useful trial for the Oaks, in the same way that the 2000 Guineas is for the Derby, and the winners usually go on to be successful and valuable brood mares.

Trainer Robert Robson won the Oaks 13 times between 1802 and 1825 and that record will surely take some beating. Jockey Frank Buckle holds the record for riders, landing it nine times between 1797 and 1823.

Henry Cecil’s Oh So Sharp landed the race in 1985, and the Ed Dunlop-trained mare Ouija Board was a very classy winner in 2004. It’s interesting to note that she also produced a Derby winner, with her son Australia landing the big one in 2014.

The Classics - St Leger

Doncaster racecourse’s flagship race is the oldest of the Classics and it was established in 1776, three years before the Oaks. It’s named after an army officer and politician who lived in Doncaster and was initially run over two miles, but the trip has been reduced since.

This race is one for the stayers and winners tend to go on and compete in the next season’s cup races, including the 2m4f Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Trainer John Scott won it 16 times between 1827 and 1862, whilst jockey Bill Scott rode the winner nine times.

Nijinsky would probably be the most famous St Leger winner, whilst Champion became the first horse to win the Derby and St Leger double in 1800. Don’t forget about Oh So Sharp either, as she completed her Triple Crown victory in this race.

The ‘Triple Crown’

Probably the most difficult feat to achieve in the sport, if a horse can win the Guineas over a mile, the Derby or Oaks at Epsom and the St Leger at Doncaster, they become a Triple Crown winner. It’s almost impossible to be good enough to win Group 1s over all three trips.

That being said, Vincent O’Brien’s Nijinsky managed to do just that back in 1970. Ridden by Lester Piggott, he won the 2000 Guineas, Derby and the St Leger and made himself a legend by doing so.

Sceptre is the only horse ever to win four Classics and she landed both Guineas, the Oaks and the St Leger back in 1902. Oh So Sharp won the fillies’ Triple Crown in 1985 and no horse has achieved that incredible feat since.

The closest we have come in recent years was Camelot in 2012, who won the 2000 Guineas and the Derby, before finishing second in the St Leger. It would be no surprise if we never have another Triple Crown winner.

The Classics today

We’ve had four of the five Classics at the time of writing and their relevance to Flat racing remains as strong as ever, as indicated by the massive amounts of prize money on offer. George Boughey landed the most recent renewal of the 2000 Guineas with Bow Echo’s victory in May 2026.

Aidan O’Brien’s True Love got the better of stablemate Precise in the 1000 Guineas, with Joseph O’Brien’s Thundering On winning the Oaks. Lambourn landed the Derby, again for Aidan O’Brien, and we’ll find out who wins the St Leger in September.

It’s also worth noting that the legacy of the Classics extends internationally, as equivalents now exist all over the world, including in Ireland, France and Germany.

To convert any guineas figure to pounds, multiply by 1.05 (so 100 guineas = £105). The gold guinea coin was first introduced in 1663 during the reign of King Charles II although the coin itself stopped being minted in the early 1800s.

In bloodstock sales, guineas are the unit of measurement often used as this includes the auctioneer commission of 5 percent that is included in all sales, making the term a true Sport of Kings tradition.

Guineas to Pounds: The Conversion

The simple table below shows how the guinea, often shortened to a GNS abbreviation in racing, is included in sales prices.

The buyer pays £1.05 per guinea; the seller receives £1 per guinea; the 5p difference is the auctioneer's commission — effectively a tidy 5% on top of the hammer price.

Why Bloodstock Is Still Sold in Guineas

At Tattersalls in Newmarket — Europe's largest bloodstock auctioneer — horses are still knocked down in guineas (abbreviated gns). The guineas term is part of racing's heritage and preserved as such, but the value of a guinea compared to a pound also allows the auctioneer's 5 percent commission to be built neatly into every bid received.

Turnover is still reported in guineas at major sales, such as the yearling sales in Newmarket, with Tattersalls sales having surpassed 400 million guineas in a year.

The Races That Carry the Name

The Guineas term is also attached to two of Britain's treasured Classic races, the five contests reserved annually for the best three-year-old fillies and colts to contest and they remain key contests in the thoroughbred industry.

The 2000 Guineas (established in 1809 for colts and fillies) and the 1000 Guineas (established in 1814 for fillies only) are both run over a mile on Newmarket's Rowley Mile course and were named after their original prize funds in guineas — a 2,000-guinea purse and a 1,000-guinea purse.

Their names endure today despite prize money running into several hundred thousand pounds.

Similarly, the Irish 1000/2000 Guineas are run at the Curragh and there are equivalent races in mainland Europe as well as in Australia at Flemington racecourse.

A Short History of the Guinea

The guinea was a British gold coin minted from 1663 to 1813, named after the Guinea region of West Africa that supplied much of the gold.

Its value floated with gold before being fixed at 21 shillings; it was effectively replaced by the pound in the Great Recoinage of 1816, but lingered as a unit of account for professional fees and luxury goods — and never left the racecourse and sales ring.

The guineas term is a true tradition in British racing and a tidy way of expressing commission that keeps guineas alive at Tattersalls.
