History-chasing Tiger Roll confirmed for third Grand National tilt in 2020

Tiger Roll 2018 Grand National

The racing world has rejoiced today with the news that Tiger Roll is going to be aimed at the Grand National.

The legendary dual winner of the world's most famous steeplechase had been the subject of much speculation over the summer with one or suggestions from Gigginstown that the 9-year-old wasn't a certainty to head back to his favourite venue for a tilt at the hat-trick.

Those worries have been put to bed for the time being though with Gordon Elliott confirming in an interview to Aintree that the National is indeed the plan.

Elliott is planning to run the famous horse twice, possibly in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan and the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham, before they head back to Liverpool looking to match Red Rum and claim a third Grand National win.

The fun and games will of course begin now with plenty of obstacles still to jump if the defending champion is indeed to make it back to the north-west in April. The handicapper will of course be taking a close look at a horse who has so far eluded his clutches and there is no doubt that a third successive win is going to be the toughest task yet.

The Gigginstown owned horse won in 2018 off a mark of 150 and carrying 10st 13lbs, before repeating the trick last season off 159 and with 11st 5lbs on his back.

We can be sure that Tiger Roll will receive a hefty hike in the weights once again in 2020 given the ease in which he won the race last season and that is going to see him either top weight, or extremely close to that alongside the likes of Native River and Anibale Fly who both could run in the spring.

If indeed Tiger Roll is given top weight for the National in 2020 he would not only be bidding to emulate Red Rum in winning the race for a third time but also looking to become the first horse since "Rummy" to win the race off top weight.

As it stands, Tiger Roll is the clear favourite in the Grand National betting to win the race with one or two firms even going as short as 5/1 about the horse making history at Aintree in 2020.
