2022 Epsom Derby Odds Update: Luxembourg trimmed in betting after Guineas third

Charlie Appleby's Coroebus was a fine winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket at the weekend, but how has the first Classic of the season affected the latest betting for the 2022 Cazoo Derby, which will be run at Epsom Downs on June 4? We take a look at the latest odds for the Derby in the wake of the Guineas at Flat HQ...

All eyes had been on the red-hot favourite Native Trail, but the champion two-year-old had to settle for the silver medal behind stablemate Coroebus on Saturday afternoon, as the James Doyle-ridden colt stormed to 2000 Guineas glory, and victory at Newmarket saw him cut in the betting for the Derby in a month's time. It's unlikely that Appleby will step Coroebus up in trip for the Derby, but he was duly cut from around 18/1 to 14/1 for the Epsom showpiece, while Native Trail has been eased to the same double-figured price having been available at 8/1 for the race prior to Saturday.

Both Godolphin raiders are likely to stay over a mile and the one to take out of the Guineas from a Derby perspective is the Aidan O'Brien-trained Luxembourg, who ran a huge race to finish third at the weekend, and with a step up in trip sure to suit the son of Camelot then he has to be one they all have to beat at Epsom in four weeks. Around a 100/30 favourite for the Derby before the 2000 Guineas, Luxembourg is now a best-priced 5/2 chance for the event, and having been outpaced through the early stages of Saturday's race, he stayed on eye-catchingly well and was doing all his best work at the finish.

There's no doubting that the O'Brien team will have plenty having trials for the Derby in the coming weeks, but Luxembourg made a huge impression on his first run of the campaign, and the Ballydoyle hotpot could prove to be extremely difficult to beat in what is an intriguing 2022 Cazoo Derby.

While Luxembourg was cut in the betting, another from the Ballydoyle team Point Lonsdale was eased from 9/1 to 16/1 for the Derby, as he failed to land any sort of blow in the Guineas, as he was a distant 10th having been well fancied, so he will be one that needs to show a lot more before he can be regarded a Classic hope.

Roger Varian's Eydon produced a huge career best to follow on from his Listed Feilden Stakes win by finishing fourth at the weekend, and having been 28/1 for the Derby prior to the Guineas he's now a best-priced 16/1 and he looks one that will enjoy the step up the one-and-a-half mile Derby trip as he was one that stayed on eye-catchingly well.

Last year's Solario Stakes winner Reach For The Moon is yet to be seen this season, but the John & Thady Gosden-trained son of Sea The Stars is currently sitting as the 9/1 second favourite for the Derby in June, while the abovementioned Appleby could have an exciting colt on his hands in the shape of New London, and that raider is also available at 9/1 following a fine novice stakes win at Newmarket a few weeks ago.

Walk Of Stars is another that could carry the silks of the Godolphin team and is a best-priced 14/1 following a conditions win last time out, while the Donnacha O'Brien-trained Piz Badile (20/1) completes the front few in the betting for what is a Derby market that should take significant shape over the coming weeks.
