ITV7 Racing Tips: Rhythm Master sets the standard at Newbury

Nick Seddon takes a look at Saturday's televised action at Ayr and Newbury - which includes the ultra-competitive Ayr Gold Cup - and tries to crack the fabled ITV7 permutation...

Ayr 13:55 - Doonside Cup Stakes

To put it simply, this revolves around Addeybb, who is the class act in the field as a bona fide Group 1 performer. He needs soft going to be seen to best effect, but the good to soft conditions should hold no fears judged by what we've seen on Friday, and bearing in mind that he's an ultra-consistent type, he's a confident pick to defy a penalty and take this. Fox Chairman looks the one who's most likely to capitalise should the favourite falter.

Newbury 14:15 - Dubai Duty Free Handicap

A typically competitive handicap for a Saturday afternoon, with some familiar names in the line-up. Maydanny disappointed at York last time but can't be written off just yet based on his excellent win at Goodwood prior to that, while the upwardly-mobile Tenbury Wells produced an excellent effort to finish second at Sandown last time out. Starcat has been holding his own in some competitive affairs and can't be discounted, but the vote goes the way of the in-form Ilaraab. He only made his debut back in June, but he's been in fine form since, and arrives here having won each of his last three starts. He's up 6 lb for his latest success at Beverley, but there's likely to be more to come from him yet and he gets the vote to strike in receipt of weight from the majority of the field.

Ayr 14:30 - Ayr Silver Cup

One of two 'consolation' events for the Gold Cup, with the other being held on Friday. This is just as tricky as the feature, and it's possible to make a solid case for several of the 24-strong field. The progressive Atalanta's Boy was unlucky not to get into the feature, and arrives here on the back of an impressive win in a competitive event at Goodwood last month. He's one to strongly consider under a 5 lb penalty, while Rathbone lines up off the same mark as when a close second at Ascot last time out. Bernardo O'reilly rather returned to form out of the blue at Doncaster last week but has to be considered if in the same mood, though the vote goes to the three-year-old King's Lynn - who rather stands out. He's got an unusual profile for this kind of race as a thrice-raced type, though he was a good second behind Starman on reappearance in a novice contest at Doncaster last month, form which has been franked in no uncertain terms since. King's Lynn's opening mark of 94 looks more than fair, and he could prove to be a good way ahead of that here.

Newbury 14:50 - Legacy Cup Stakes

We’ve got just the four runners for this Group 3 contest, and Extra Elusive is a confident pick. He’s really come into his own this season, winning back-to-back contests at this level at Haydock and Windsor respectively last month, and sets the standard as a consequence here. Hollie Doyle was in the saddle for both of those wins, and with that partnership set to continue, Extra Elusive is fancied to go in again.

Ayr 15:05 - Firth Of Clyde Fillies' Stakes

A tricky Group 3 contest for two-year-old fillies, which has a habit of throwing up a surprise or two. There are several worthy of consideration here, including the Mehmas filly She's So Nice, who was a solid fourth in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York last month. Scarlet Bear is another with place form in a Group contest having hit the frame at this level at Salisbury earlier this month, while both Lullaby Moon and Mamba Wamba won novice events in good style last time out, though for win purposes it's difficult to oppose Umm Kulthum. She was one place and two lengths in-front of She's So Nice at York last month, finishing third despite missing the break. She sets a clear form standard as a consequence, and is a confident selection.

Newbury 15:25 - Mill Reef Stakes

This Group 2 contest has a habit of throwing up a star of the future, with subsequent Group 1 winners Ribchester and Harry Angel both winning it within the last five years. There are several highly-promising types in here, including Fivethousandtoone, who cruised to success in a novice contest at Newcastle earlier this month. He's open to any kind of improvement, as is the unbeaten Bahrain Pride, who took his winning start to two when taking the Two-Year-Old Trophy at Ripon last month.

Devilwala was no match for Minzaal in the Gimcrack Stakes at York last time, but that was still a good effort and there could be more to come from him yet, though the vote goes the way of Rhythm Master. He built on a winning debut in a novice event at Haydock in July to finish an excellent third behind Campanelle and Nando Parrado in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville last month. He sets a clear standard here on the back of that, and with the potential of more improvement to come yet, he's a confident pick.

Ayr 15:40 - Ayr Gold Cup

This is typically wide-open, and it looks worth playing two against the field, beginning with Stone Of Destiny. He arrives here on the back of a valuable success, storming through late in the day in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster last week. He carries a 5 lb penalty here as a consequence, but he's run off higher marks in the past and has winning form off just 1 lb lower than this. He has a high draw, meaning there should be sufficient pace to track courtesy of the likes of Air RaidMajor Jumbo and Bungee Jump, and he makes plenty of appeal with Oisin Murphy booked.

Meanwhile, it could also be worth playing Another Batt each-way. He's on the other side to Stone Of Destiny with a low draw, and arrives here on the back of a poor run at Leopardstown last week. However, he'd scored on reappearance at Thirsk prior to that, and is worthy of another chance. He's a smart sprinter at his best, meaning that he's potentially very well treated on his best form. He should have a strong pace to sit off here, and it would be no surprise to see him hit the frame at a double figure price.
