Today's Goodwood Tips: English King can bounce back to form

Nick Seddon runs through the card on Day Three of Glorious Goodwood, which is headlined by the Group 1 Nassau Stakes...

13:10 - Mirabeau En Provence Handicap

We begin Thursday's card with a handicap over five furlongs, and considering how well front-runners have been doing so far this week, it seems likely that prominent sorts will hold an upper-hand here. Electric Ladyland falls into that category after making all at Windsor last time out, and she's dangerous under a 5 lb rise, while similar comments apply to Glamorous Anna - who won in a similar fashion at the same track 10 days ago and should go close again.

Caspian Queen will make her challenge late and is one to consider if shrugging off a poor run last time, but the vote goes the way of the bang in-form Bal Mal. He arrives here having won five of his last six this year, improving 27 lb in the process, and while he takes his chance on a career high mark here, he shaped as though he could still have something to offer when winning at Chepstow 9 days ago and could yet find more from a good draw in stall two.

13:45 - Unibet You're On Handicap

This three-year-old handicap over a mile and a quarter looks a warm one, and several are worthy of consideration, beginning with Magnetised. He has an attractive pedigree, and his opening mark of 87 could prove to be a lenient one, considering he showed plenty of ability when beaten by just a neck on his second start at Thirsk earlier this month - with the extra two furlongs here likely to suit. Zabeel Champion arrives here in fine form after winning his last two starts, and although an 8 lb rise makes life tougher, he would be dangerous if allowed to dictate things up top, while there should be more to come from both Bright Melody and Magical Morning - who represent powerful yards.

Celtic Art faces a tough task under top weight, and it could be worth siding with Al Salt. He's won his last two starts at Newcastle and Wolverhampton over a mile, doing so comfortably despite still looking green most recently. The extra two furlongs will suit, and bearing in mind that there should be plenty more to come from him yet, his official mark of 88 looks more than fair.

14:15 - Richmond Stakes

Last year's Richmond Stakes produced a subsequent Commonwealth Cup winner in Golden Horde, and it remains to be seen whether we'll see one that's quite as smart this time around. Admiral Nelson is certainly bred to hold that kind of company, and while he didn't quite fire in the Coventry Stakes last month, he was quickly turned back out and is worth another chance based on his impressive winning debut at the Curragh. Supremacy is interesting upped in class after impressing in a Windsor maiden and Qaader can't be discounted, though Yazaman looks the way to go. He's produced useful efforts the last twice, finishing second behind the smart-looking Tactical in both the Windsor Castle and the July Stakes, and he's very much the one to beat here on the back of those efforts.

14:45 - Gordon Stakes

This has a feeling of a renewal of the King Edward VII Stakes, bearing in mind that several arrive here looking to bounce back from failing to figure in the Epsom Derby. Khalifa Sat fared the best of those, and although he's proven over course and distance he was undoubtedly better placed than some of the others in behind him, and he'll have to back that up here. Mogul has yet to fire this season, but he's certainly bred to be high-class being a full-brother to Japan and it would be no surprise should he click into place sooner or later, while Highland Chief eased to victory in a competitive handicap prior to Epsom and will be looking to bounce back.

Al Aasy looked smart when winning the Bahrain Trophy latest and is feared, but is looks worth keeping the faith with English King. He plugged on well at Epsom having been too far back to have a serious say, and was certainly the rightful favourite that day having looked smart when winning the Lingfield Derby Trial last month. He sets the standard here on that run, and bearing in mind that Frankie Dettori will be keen to make amends in the saddle, he's fancied to take this.

15:15 - Nassau Stakes

A cracking renewal of the Nassau Stakes, which features no less than four Group 1 winners in the seven-strong field. Deirdre created history when winning this for Japan last year, and while she'll likely give it a good go, others make more appeal. The globe-trotting Magic Wand would hold claims on her best form, but this seems likely to boil down to a straight fight between Nazeef and Fancy Blue.

The former has won her last six starts, including the Falmouth Stakes last time out, though she faces a tough task conceding weight to Fancy Blue. Three-year-olds have a fine record in the Nassau, winning this six times since 2012, and Fancy Blue looked a high-class filly in the making when winning the French Oaks earlier this month. There should be more to come from her yet on just her fifth start and she's a confident pick from a low draw.

15:45 - Gusbourne Nursery Handicap

Another tricky race to decode, though at the prices it is Running Back who makes the most appeal. He makes plenty of appeal on paper as a half-brother to the smart juvenile Kool Kompany, and he's shown pretty solid form for this kind of level in two starts over six furlongs - only being beaten a neck at Kempton last time out. The extra furlong here should suit, and he looks the way to go bearing in mind that there should be plenty more to come from him yet. William Bligh sets the standard on what he's shown so far and is respected, while Calcutta Cup is another to consider.

16:20 - EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes

We've got very little form to work with in this maiden, with four fillies making their debut and the other five having just had the one run to date, but Teodolina looks to have solid claims. She represents a yard in the Richard Hannon team who have an excellent record with juveniles, and she showed plenty of ability when third on her debut over six furlongs at Newmarket earlier this month. She still looked to be learning on the job that day, and provided she can take a step forward as expected here, she's fancied to take this from a good draw in stall two.

16:55 - Tatler Nursery Handicap

It's unoriginal, but it's very difficult to oppose Winter Power in the finale. She has plenty of speed in her pedigree, and looked potentially useful when sauntering clear on her handicap debut at Redcar last time out. She's hit with a 6 lb rise for that here, but she appeals as one who's a good way ahead of the handicapper yet, and provided the quick turnaround doesn't cause any hiccups, she's fancied to strike.
