With six of these racing on the All Weather for the first time, it might pay to side with one that has previous experience on an artificial surface. ELLADE (NAP – 1 point win bet at 12/1) looks to have plenty in her favour and will be making her first start since leaving Mark Johnston to join Richard Hannon. That change of stable can often be enough to revitalise a horse and if she is back to her best, she’d have a strong chance of landing this.
Unbeaten in two starts on the All Weather (both at Lingfield), she lost out by just a neck to Canonized at Windsor in June with that horse landing the Listed Rockingham Stakes at York on Saturday in good style. She was then sent to contest a Group 2 at Newmarket before being placed off a 3lb higher mark than today at Musselburgh. She needs to bounce back from a heavy defeat on her final start for Johnston but drops back down in class and has conditions to suit.
As one of the likely pace setters in this race, jockey Sean Levey should be able to take up a good position from an inside draw in stall 4. By Showcasing, she is out of a dual Listed-winning mare, who also won twice on the All Weather and was beaten by just a short neck in a French Group 3. With that pedigree, there are surely more races to be won with this juvenile.
It is almost impossible to weigh up the maiden/novice form of the well-bred Poet, and he is an interesting handicap debutant off a mark of just 73. He also has the eye-catching jockey booking of title chasing William Buick. Golden Rainbow and Mohi, who have both won on the All Weather, complete the shortlist.
