Today's Racing Tips: Two Bets at Leopardstown & Dublin
There are two bets for today’s racing at Doncaster and Leopardstown.
Doncaster Tip
13:45 – 5½f Portland Handicap (Class 2)
Trainer Roger Teal knows what it takes for a three-year-old to win the Portland Handicap having landed the race two years ago with the subsequent Group 1 winner Oxted. Connections will be hoping that their progressive sprinter WHENTHEDEALINSDONE (NAP - 1 point win bet at 8/1) can follow a similar path. He is certainly bred for it given that he is out of the classy Maureen, who won a couple of Group 3s and was beaten by just a neck in Group 2 company. William Buick keeps the ride on board this son of Dark Angel and will primarily be focussed on getting away to a good start. That didn’t happen at York last time out but he was still able to get within around four-lengths of the winner. Prior to that, he was a comfortable winner at Goodwood and also won at Windsor back in June. Effective over both five and six furlongs, this intermediate trip looks perfect and he ran well on his only previous visit to Doncaster. Being drawn in the middle could be a big advantage and he will also benefit from a 2lb weight-for-age allowance. Mondammej gained a deserved win last weekend and should go well again. Digital and Boundless Power are also respected.
Leopardstown Tip
14:10 – 1m Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile (Group 2)
THUNDER MOON (1 point win bet at 13/2) enjoyed a fabulous juvenile campaign by winning the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh before getting within 2.5-lengths of the top-class St Mark’s Basilica in the Dewhurst Stakes. Things haven’t gone to plan this year with comprehensive defeats in three of his four Group 1 starts. However, he went down by just a head in the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville two starts back, showing that he does retain plenty of ability. A repeat of that run would make him difficult to beat today and he is unpenalized off 9-5. He is yet to fire over the one-mile trip but is well worth another go, especially now back on better ground and down in class. Fev Rover, third in the 1000 Guineas, and the consistent Maker Of Kings complete the shortlist.
