What is the St James's Palace Stakes?
The St James's Palace Stakes is a Group One race run on the opening day of Royal Ascot, and is open to three-year-old colts.
Contested on the Tuesday of Royal Ascot, the St James's Palace Stakes can attract the Classic generation that have competed in the English, Irish or French 2000 Guineas earlier in the season, and it can often be a race that determine who is the best three-year-old miler. First run in 1834, the St James's Palace Stakes has grown in stature down the years and has been won by some of Flat racing's biggest names including Giant's Causeway (2000), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Frankel (2011) in recent times.
What happened in the 2020 St James's Palace Stakes?
John Gosden's Palace Pier produced a fine burst of speed in the closing stages of the St James's Palace Stakes to edge out Pinatubo in a sparkling finish of the Group 1 showpiece. Last year's star two-year-old Pinatubo had unleashed a fine kick to gain a slight lead, but 2020 Royal Ascot top jockey Frankie Dettori got a real tune out of Palace Pier and Gosden's charge swooped around the outside of the Godolphin adversary to claim the win. Beaten by a length, Pinatubo just held off Wichita to bag second place.
