For weeks all the talking heads and column inches surrounding the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes was who could step up and challenge Tiz the Law.

First of all it was going to be Nadal who was without a shadow of a doubt every bit the horse Tiz the Law was. Had Bob Baffert’s steed not been forced into an early retirement due to an ankle injury then we would have been treated to a great race between two top three-year-olds. As it was Nadal was out and next in line was his stablemate, Charlatan.

The problem with Charlatan was at first he had the failed drugs test hanging over his head after winning his group at the Arkansas Derby. That along with Nadal’s planned run meant that Charlatan was now being pointed towards the Grade I Woody Stephens. When Nadal retired it was expected his stablemate would step up to the big race but then he too succumbed to an injury which put him out of the Belmont.

Maxfield was the next potential challenger. He was ruled out of the Triple Crown but following the rearrangement of the Horse Racing calendar due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he was back in the hunt. A win on his return at the Grade III Matt Winn put him squarely on course to take on the shortened Belmont Stakes but it was decided he would pass at the opportunity before injury too ruled him out anyway.

This all left Tiz the Law head and shoulders above everyone else and it came as no surprise when he romped home as a 4/5f with ease. No-one in the field was remotely in his class and unless someone steps up in the elongated Prep season, there is little doubt that he’ll be the favorite for the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Next up will be one more race at Saratoga on August 8 for the Grade I Travers Stakes before the awaited second-leg of the 2020 Triple Crown season. Tiz the Law showed us on Saturday that he had the potential to win all three Triple Crown races.

With the calendar being as it is with a large gap between the Belmont and the Kentucky Derby, keeping a horse in tip-top condition will not be easy but if his premier competition keep falling by the wayside, it could be game on for Tiz the Law.
