Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner:  Champagne Salute (Race 4) - This daughter of Runhappy didn’t run particularly well in her debut, however she was facing a vastly better group of fillies. The 62 Beyer Speed Figure she earned is nearly 10 points higher than the next highest figure this field has to offer, and it’s likely she improves in her second start for trainer Todd Pletcher. She’s going to be a very heavy favorite, but she certainly should be in a race of this caliber.

Best Value:  Caxambas Candy (Race 3) - With rain in the forecast for Sunday I’m assuming this race comes off the turf, but either way I think Caxambas Candy has a big shot at what should be a square price. This horse was well beaten by Tio Magico last out on the main track at Gulfstream, however I think he’s capable of better based on what he showed in his debut over this track. If the race does come off the turf, you can rest assured that he’s well meant for dirt racing, and ultimately I think his odds are going to be well worth taking a shot with him.

Other Races of Interest:  Race 2 - This is another I’m hoping comes off the turf because my top pick Cultured (#10) appears to be working like a fiend on the dirt track at Palm Meadows. She may be the “other” Saffie Joseph, Jr. in this race due to the presence of her more accomplished stablemate Champagne Ivy (#2), but that one was dreadful in her lone main-track appearance whereas Cultured has pedigree that suggests she’s well meant for this surface to go along with her strong works. Even if the race stays on turf it’s clear this filly has some ability, and this isn’t a bad spot at all to get your career going.

Race 9 - For a brief moment it looked like Gitana (#2) was destined for big things with her new trainer Rohan Crichton, however she crashed back to Earth in her last start. She did have some trouble in that spot, but it was a dramatic return to form for a filly that had previously been pretty ordinary for some good trainers. Since she’s going to be a very short price, I prefer Bramble Berry (#4) from the barn of trainer Kent Sweezey. This filly was bad in her last start, however her prior form stacks up favorably to this bunch and I’m expecting her to bounce back here at what should be fair odds.
