Race 2: Turf, 1 1/16th, Clm50k, 3+

An early turf race on the card, finds a group of claimers who have not done much winning over the course of their careers. I want a turfer who is well bred, can handle the distance, and whose class is moderately interesting. One that has these attributes in spades is Jorge Abreu’s Price Talk #2. It is odd to see another trainer working for Klaravich Stables. Normally, it is Chad Brown, but the “KS” is going to hang above Abreu’s Oklahoma digs for a bit. Javier Castellano, who is still not up to scratch as far as I am concerned, gets the mount for the first time. This one will most assuredly be a short price … but it is not unwarranted, considering the class drop and the light race schedule in 2021.

My top pick comes from the barn of Todd Pletcher, and his excellent looking Summer to Remember #5. Out of Summer Front, the HOF trainer has had a number of these from this sire, and they take to the grass quite well. Don’t forget that this one was bred by the former Governor of the State of Kentucky, Brereton Jones, and his stock have turned out to be accomplished. Last out, the older colt was trying to get Megacity in the end, and though he lost by a little more than a length, it was great experience. I think this conditioner level is superb, and it is a good spot. Nice pick with leading rider Luis Saez, who regularly takes Pletcher’s mounts out for a spin on the green. Bet ‘em …

Wagering Recommendation: $25/$50 WP #5

Race 7: Turf, 1 Mile, ALLW90k, F&M 3+ NY Breds

This category of races is a real challenge because it excludes open players, and focuses in on state company. For my money, I want to find a horse who defies logic, and offers a price. When I see the name of Mark Casse, I immediately know that he has entered one that has a major opportunity. He was formally inducted to the Hall of Fame last week, and is not going to take a vacation. It is Saratoga after all. I like Tracy Farmer’s Pretty Clever #3 because this filly comes out of Hard Spun, and even though her turf experience is almost non-existent, clearly her conditioner thinks otherwise. Hard Spuns can do wonders on the grass, and they are some of my favorite offspring to play. This 3-yr-old comes in after a wire-to-wire score last out at Belmont on the dirt in a MSW75k. Now, with Tyler Gaffalione in the irons, she should make the move to the grass in fine style. Gaffs is riding amazingly well, and rise in class should not be insurmountable. Nothing like an early speed type … in a spot like this one.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager, WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Race 8: Turf, 5½F, AOC80k, 3+

As we turn to racing on the turf, the sprint on this surface is sure to bring us an education. Just when you think you have this one tabbed, it will pull the rug out from under your handicapping sensibilities. I particularly like a runner in a race like this one that is class elevating … rapidly. After a brief survey, I know who I like … Horacio DePaz’s Noble Emoition #3. The gelding is going well since June, and he has a pair of excellent scores sprinting on the sod. Jose Ortiz was there for both of them, and he really has melded nicely with this son of Noble Mission. Making that leap from Belmont in an OC45k race to an open ALLW103k affair was quite a challenge. He handled it with aplomp. DePaz is one of those conditioners who does not get his due. Would be nice to see him notch his 3rd win of the Meet in here … Let’s put him with a longer priced runner like Mike Trombetta’s Matta #5 who gets Ricardo Santana aboard. Looks like a potent Exacta that could bring some ready cash.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Box, 3/5

Race 9: Dirt, 6F, Tale of a Cat S. $120k, 4+

The “Feature” on this Friday card brings together a small group of older sprinters as they turn and burn trying to notch a “Non-G” victory for themselves (or really just for the connections … horses cannot spend money themselves …).

As for a winner, if you are looking about for one, you might as well face facts and take Saffie Joseph’s Wind of Change #4. This one out of Forestry was stellar at Monmouth at the end of May, and the 6-yr-old took it to the house with a super speed fig. That 100k score was impressive, and if he can replicate that effort … this race will be over very quickly. Irad Ortiz only makes this more of a win, in many ways. Opposing him is Brittany Russell and her excellent 4-yr-old out of Munnings. Wonderwherecraigis #5 took some time off from this type of competition, and now is headed back up the ladder. That monster speed fig he posted last time at Pimlico is what has everyone in a stir—104. If new jock Luis Saez can get him out on the front, then he might be able to wrangle himself a win.

For the sake of variety, and in an effort to grab some value, let’s go shopping for one that is sure to be a better price than these 2. My vote goes to Jack Sisterson’s Bon Raison #3 who has the look of a champion. He needs a chance after his 2021 bow ended in defeat at Belmont. Let’s give that one a pass because he clearly needed it. The Calumet homebred came to Saratoga ready to work, and he did … look at those times! If that is any indication, then the rest of this field better watch themselves. His late power can be a major weapon with Jorge Vargas aboard. I am hoping the price will drift towards 10/1, and if that happens, we are going to be sitting on easy street.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/4/5
