My Derby pick is Authentic. All the naysayers, cynics, and haters wrote this horse off, leading up to the Derby. He went toe to toe with the favorite, Tiz the Law, and rebuffed him. That stretch run showed he is up to the task here in the Preakness. Check that time, if Equibase clocked it properly!

Pundits questioned whether an Into Mischief colt could get the distance of 1 ¼. Well, they received their answer loud and clear. Bettors were rewarded with a juicy $18.80 per $2.00, for the Win. I still cannot believe that a Baffert horse was that great a price in that spot.

Storylines are a plenty here, pertaining to Authentic. The tale behind John Velazquez getting to ride him in the Derby is poetic justice. Earlier in the year, he fell out with his longtime agent Angel Cordero, who replaced him with Manny Franco. It was Cordero who engineered his new charge to have the opportunity to ride Tiz the Law, spurning Velazquez. What goes around, comes around.

Then you have the tale of MyRaceHorse.com and B. Wayne Hughes, the owner of Spendthrift Farm in Lexington. Hughes bought into the micro-share company built by Michael Behrens and offered 12,500 chances at $206.00 each to the public. This included the opportunity to invest in not only Authentic’s racing career, but also in his breeding rights.

Flipping the script, it became a sensation, and Hughes backed the project to the point of outfitting Johnny V in MyRaceHorse silks, instead of his distinctive orange and lavender. For the Preakness, Baffert has Authentic again in the right spot. In the Winner’s Circle, he summarily knocked Baffert to the ground, by accident.

Afterwards, the horse was not even tired, pulling his groom along back to the barn. Workouts look great at this point, and Authentic’s sleep over with HOF trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, went superbly. I like the fact on top of all these reasons, that Velasquez will ride in the Pimlico Special the day before at the exact same distance. If Authentic is 9-5 at post time that will be a gift. Win bet, all in, and for good measure, an exacta wheel, 9/2-3-5-10.

Chance: Muy Muy Caliente
