Meeting: Live horse racing is conducted at Albuquerque Downs from late June until late September each year on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Daily racing also occurs during the New Mexico State Fair September 7-17. Albuquerque holds both thoroughbred and quarter horse races. Despite its relatively low profile, the track offers many lucrative stakes races led by the $400,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity for quarter horses. The biggest race for thoroughbreds is the $200,000 Downs at Albuquerque Handicap. In 2019, Albuquerque offered a record 34 stakes races for both thoroughbreds and quarter horses worth more than $3.5 million.
History: Albuquerque Downs is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Racing at the State Fair began in 1938, making it the oldest race meet in New Mexico. In addition, the track hosts the New Mexico State Fair Futurity, which is the oldest continuously run quarter horse race.
Facilities: There are several ways to view the races at Albuquerque, including general admission, which is free and gives you access to the grandstand and apron, a VIP Room, box seats, the Turf Club and Jockey Club. There is also a casino on the premises with slots and electronic table games. The track is a one-mile dirt oval.
