Mountaineer Park Track Details
Address: 1420 Mountaineer Cir, New Cumberland, WV 26047
Website: www.moreatmountaineer.com
Meeting: Mountaineer’s thoroughbred meet starts at the beginning of May and runs all the way through early December. The centerpiece of the meet is the Grade 3, $500,000 West Virginia Derby for 3-year-olds, which highlights a day of racing that features seven stakes races in all and also includes the Grade 3, $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes.
History: Originally Waterford Park, a nod to track founder Al Boyle’s ancestral home, Mountaineer Racetrack opened in the spring of 1951, 14 years after its inception. The track was sold a few years after its opening to James F. Edwards, and the Ogden Corporation acquired the property in 1969. In 1987, the track was purchased by Bill Blair and renamed Mountaineer Park. In 1994, the track was granted permission to install slot machines, and it became the first racino in the country. The track changed hands again in 2019, this time purchased by Century Casinos and Vici Properties.
Facilities: As the nation’s first ever racino, Mountaineer of course offers slot machines, along with casino table games, including blackjack, three-card poker, and roulette. Mountaineer also boasts a resort on the property, as well as a newly built sports book. Horse Racing at Mountaineer is conducted over a one-mile dirt oval and a seven-furlong turf course.
