Meeting: Sharing the calendar with Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course as part of the New York Racing Association (NYRA) circuit, the Aqueduct meet typically runs from late October/early November through April (though prior to 1977, Aqueduct also hosted a summer meet from mid-June to late July). The highlight of the meet is the Wood Memorial, which takes place in the spring and is New York’s major prep race for the Kentucky Derby. Of near equal import is the fall’s Cigar Mile, a one-mile dirt test for older horses, and the Carter Handicap, which is typically run on the Wood Memorial undercard.
History: The only track located within New York City limits, Aqueduct opened its doors on Sept. 27, 1894, and along with Gulfstream Park is a focal point for winter racing in the east. The track has three courses: a main dirt track, which has a circumference of 1 1/8 miles, and two turf courses — a one-mile outer turf course and an inner turf course measuring approximately seven furlongs. The winter meet was traditionally conducted on an inner-dirt course that was specifically designed to be able to withstand the demanding weather conditions encountered at that time of year, but it was torn up in favor of an additional turf course in 2018. The racetrack, known affectionately as “The Big A,” is located on the same property as the Resorts World New York City, making Aqueduct a “racino,” which is a term used to describe a combination racetrack and casino.
Facilities: Aqueduct’s grandstand is now split between a racing section and a casino, which has a wide array of slot machines, including four automated table games: baccarat, blackjack, craps and roulette. The main attraction of the racing side is Longshots, which was formerly the largest restaurant in New York City, but now serves as a sports bar and simulcasting center. With a massive glass window set against the track, Longshots offers sweeping views of the Big A and is an ideal spot from which to watch the races. The track is accessible by New York City subway and is a stone’s throw from JFK Airport.
