History:  The Beresford Stakes traditionally takes place on the same weekend as the Royal Lodge Stakes with both races now forming the start of the European Road to the Kentucky Derby.

First raced in 1875, the race has a long history although it didn’t become an annual fixture on the Irish Horse Racing calendar until 1949. It has always taken place at the famous Curragh racecourse bar 2017 and 2018, when it shifted to Naas due to redevelopment work.

It was in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2012 but was removed a year later. It was added to the Kentucky Derby Road in 2017.

Taking place over the mile distance on tuf, it is open to two year-olds and is currently classified as a Grade II flat race.
