History:  Like another of the Kentucky Derby prep races held four weeks before the Derby itself, The Blue Grass Stakes has flitted between a Grade II and I race since the inception of the grading system. It is currently classified as a Grade II race. It is named after the Bluegrass region of Kentucky.

It has had a varied history with the first running being in 1911 under a different name, the Lexington Association Blue Grass Stakes and held at the Kentucky Association Race Track. It stopped throughout the first World War before restarting in 1919. From 1927 through 1936, no race was held under this banner before being revived in 1937 at Keeneland and being continuously held since then up until the Coronavirus outbreak of 2020.

It was held at Churchill Downs during the final three years of the Second World War before reverting back to Keeneland where it has been run ever since.
