Part of the original seven-race Breeders’ Cup program, the Turf was first run in 1984. The race is a Grade 1 event worth $4 million run at a distance of 1 ½ miles on turf. It routinely pits the best turf horses from America against top European runners due to its position on the calendar and configuration, which are both conducive to Euros.
The Turf boasts 11 ‘Win and You’re In’ events, the most of any Breeders’ Cup race, that provide their winners with an all-expenses paid entry into the starting gate: the Grade 1 Gran Premio International Carlos Pellegrini at San Isidro, the Grade 1 Grande Premio Brasil at Hipodromo da Gavea, the Group 1 Prince of Wales’ at Royal Ascot, the Grade 1 Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin, the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, the Grade 1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park, the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap at Del Mar, the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga, the Jockey Club Derby at Belmont Park, the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and the Group 1 Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp.
The Turf has produced many memorable performances — High Chaparral and Conduit have both won the race in back-to-back years, the former dead-heating with Johar in 2003 in his second bid — but perhaps its most notable winner came in 2018 when the mare Enable became the first horse to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Turf in the same year.
