History: The Breeders’ Futurity was first run in 1910 at the Kentucky Association track in Lexington, KY, where it was held continuously for 20 years. In 1931, the race moved north to Latonia Race Track in Covington, KY for a few years before shifting back to Lexington in 1938, this time at the newly opened Keeneland. The race is run at 1 1/16 miles, a distance it settled on in 1981 after being a sprint race to that point, and is a Grade 1 event, a status it achieved in 2004. In addition to serving as an early Derby prep, the Breeders’ Futurity is also a ‘Win and You’re In’ qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Notable winners include Triple Crown winner Whirlaway (1940), Hall of Famer Round Table (1956), Kentucky Derby winner Swale (1983), and Favorite Trick, who won the race in 1997, the same year he was crowned Horse of the Year.
