Cardinal Stakes
When: April 2, 2020
Where: Chelmsford City (Essex, England)
Purse: £60,000
Race Distance: 1 mile
History: Like the previous race on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby, the catchily titled Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes, the Cardinal Stakes was created primarily as a Prep Race for the Run for the Roses and therefore has very little history behind it.
The race first took place in 2019 with Bye Bye Hong Kong winning. The 2020 edition was suspended due to the Covid-19 outbreak that shut down all Horse Racing in the United Kingdom.
It awards the most qualifying points however despite its lack of historical importance and the smallest purse on the European road, making it a key race for horses with ambitions of racing at the Kentucky Derby.
Qualifying Points: 30-12-6-3
