History: The Champagne’s long and storied history began in 1867, the first year the prestigious race for 2-year-olds was run. Initially held at Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx, NY, the race moved to nearby Morris Park Racecourse from 1890-1904 before finding a permanent home in 1905 just outside New York City limits at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. The Champagne is a Grade 1 event currently run at a distance of one mile on dirt and is one of the premier races of the Belmont Fall Championship Meet. The race is a prominent early stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby — in fact, it has produced the most Derby winners of any juvenile prep — and it is also one of the major preps for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, to which the winner receives an all-expenses paid berth. Its litany of notable winners include Triple Crown heroes Seattle Slew and Count Fleet, as well as Racing Hall of Famers Colin, Buckpasser, Riva Ridge, Alydar, Spectacular Bid and Easy Goer. In 1972, the immortal Secretariat finished first but was disqualified and placed second.
