Delaware Park Track Details

Address: 777 Delaware Park Blvd, Wilmington, DE 19804
Website: www.delawarepark.com

Meeting: Racing at Delaware Park typically spans five months, from May to October, and is highlighted by the Delaware Handicap, a former Grade 1 event at 1 ¼ miles for fillies and mares that was recently downgraded to a Grade 2. The track is also home to the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks, Grade 3 Kent, and Grade 3 Robert G. Dick Memorial, which all take place on the same day in early July. Field sizes tend to be on the small side at Delaware due to the presence of other mid-Atlantic tracks and the fact it is not part of an established racing circuit, but the track has plenty of charm and does attract some top names in the sport on its big days.

History: Located just outside Wilmington, DE and 30 minutes from Philadelphia, PA, Delaware Park opened on June 26, 1937 and is the only thoroughbred racetrack in Delaware. It is also the only track in the mid-Atlantic to regularly card Arabian races. The track was designed by racing titan William duPont, Jr., who helped build more than 20 racetracks in his life, in partnership with Donald P. Ross. Kentucky Derby hero Barbaro and near-Triple Crown winner Afleet Alex both made successful debuts at Delaware Park, and the champion sprinter Xtra Heat was based there.

Facilities: Delaware Park is a racino that offers nearly 2,500 slot machines and table games, including blackjack, poker, and roulette, as well as a sports book that takes bets on a variety of professional sports. The racetrack is a one-mile dirt oval with a seven-furlong turf course inside of it. Delaware also features one of the most scenic paddocks in the country and several dining options to choose from.
