Meeting: Ferndale holds a six-day meet in the middle of August, with the $20,000 C.J. Hindley Humboldt County Marathon Handicap taking top billing. Horse Racing at Ferndale takes place exclusively on dirt.
History: Ferndale has been the site of the Humboldt County Fair since 1896. Though it disappeared for a while in the early 20th century, racing was legalized in 1935 and it has become a mainstay of the fair ever since.
Facilities: The track is a tight half-mile oval with sharp turns, making it unique in American racing. The atmosphere of the track is also unique, as it is set in a community brimming with Victorian architecture and antique shops, giving it the feel of racing’s heyday in the country.
