History:  Held five weeks before the Kentucky Derby, the Florida Derby has become a key prep race as the top horses look to either earn their place for the Run for the Roses or get in the best form possible. The race first took place in 1952 and has been in its five week before the Derby slot since 2005. It is a grade I listed event with a purse of $1,000,000.

Todd Pletcher has had a lot of recent success at the race, having trained the winning horse five times since 2007. This record is bettered though by jockey John R. Velazquez who has tasted victory five times since 2009.
