History:  The Fountain of Youth is one of the most important second-tier Kentucky Derby prep races and a feeder race to the Grade 1 Florida Derby. Inaugurated in 1945, it’s named for the sought-after mythical spring that was thought to be located in the area. The race was run at various distances from its inception until 1953, when it was first contested at its current distance of 1 1/16 miles. The Fountain of Youth has been a super productive Derby prep, with four of its winners having taken both the Derby and another American classic, including Tim Tam (1958), Kauai King (1966), Spectacular Bid (1979) and Thunder Gulch (1995). Other notable winners include prolific sires Pulpit (1997), Scat Daddy (2007), and Quality Road (2009), as well as 2013 Derby winner Orb and 2012 Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags.
