History:  The Fukuryu Stakes first took place in 2000 and has been part of the Japanese Horse Racing calendar every year since bar 2011. It was the most recent addition on the Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2019, becoming the fourth race and the most valuable in terms of qualifying points

With 40 points available to the winner, it gives that horse an excellent chance of winning the four-race series in one go. In 2020, Herrschaft did this but his place at the Kentucky Derby wasn’t guaranteed due to the Cov-19 outbreak and the delay to the fall of the big race.
