Meeting: Hastings conducts racing from early May, generally starting the day of the Kentucky Derby, through late October. Its racing program is headlined annually by the Grade 3, $200,000 British Columbia Derby for 3-year-olds, which shares the same card as the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks. On the first Monday in August, the track traditionally hosts British Columbia Cup Day that features a series of six stakes races. Other notable races at the track include the Grade 3, $100,000 Ballerina and Grade 3, $100,000 BC Premier’s. Racing at Hastings is dirt only.
History: Hastings Racecourse is located at Hastings Park, four miles from downtown Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. The track was first opened in 1889, making it Vancouver’s longest continuously used professional sports facility, and was originally known as East Park. The racing operation is currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, who acquired the lease of the city-owned track in 2004. In 2011, it was announced that the track would close at the end of its 2012 lease due to low profits, but a new lease was re-negotiated and the track continued to run. Also in 2012, Hastings garnered national attention when jockey Mario Gutierrez, who got his start at the track and won riding titles in 2007 and 2008, won the Kentucky Derby aboard I’ll Have Another.
Facilities: In addition to racing, which is conducted over a five-furlong track, Hastings has a gaming floor with over 500 slot machines. The track also offers several dining options, from casual fare to fine dining.
