The 2020 Kentucky Derby on Saturday culminates an elongated prep season because of the Covid-19 outbreak. Everything gets back to some sense of normalcy on Saturday however as the Iroquois Stakes, traditionally the curtain raiser to the Derby prep season takes place and one two-year-old colt is already attracting plenty of interest.

Therideofalifetime is the son of Candy Ride who has already impressed having stepped up to Grade II level for the Saratoga Special Stakes and chasing home Jackie’s Warrior, who has already shown to be one to watch. Therideofalifetime went into that race with the highest Beyer score in the field at 85 and is the very short-priced favorite for this year on Saturday, opening up at 7-5.

The Iroquois is also a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ race serving up an all-expenses paid trip to Keeneland in November for the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. This is often seen as a good insight into what may happen six months later at the Kentucky Derby itself.

Kentucky Derby Odds

Three times winner in this one is Dale Romans who has two colts entered. Firstly Ultimate Badger and then Sittin On Go. The former has already broken his maiden on debut in a five-furlong race at Ellis Park in July. His other horse will be riding in a race for the first time on Saturday. Neither are rated as contenders according to the Morning Line odds as they are 12-1 and 15-1 shots respectively.

Dale Romans isn’t the only trainer sitting on three wins in the Iroquois however as Steve Asmussen has also tasted joy in this one thrice. He has two 6-1 shots in Midnight Bourbon and Super Stock. The former also broke his maiden at Ellis Park but only a couple of weeks back with a win over a mile. Super Stock took his races to get a victory having won at Lone Star in the TTA Sales Futurity earlier in August.

If you are looking to oppose Therideofalifetime however, the smart money may well be on 5-1 shot Pico d’Oro. He won last time out at the Ellis Park Juvenile over seven furlongs and with the bloodlines of being a Curlin colt, you know he has every opportunity to be a pretty decent horse.

Our in-house handicapper will be here on Friday with his preview of the race which offers up Derby qualifying points on a 10-4-2-1 scale.
