Handicapping a full field of twenty 3-year-old horses going a distance of ground that virtually none have travelled to that point in their careers, often over a water-logged track, is not an easy endeavour. For such a chaotic event, however, the Kentucky Derby has generally produced logical results over the years, but there have also been plenty of improbable winners that have mystified both serious bettors and casual fans alike.

The biggest longshot to win the race happened in 1913 in a field of just eight horses. That year, Donerail blew up the tote board at odds of 91-1, which is unlikely to ever be surpassed given the contemporary public’s affinity for betting higher-priced horses in the race, thus depressing their odds. That said, Donerail’s next closest pursuer won the 2019 edition of the Derby, when Country House was placed first at odds of 65-1 after Maximum Security, who crossed the finish line first, was disqualified.

Mine That Bird is perhaps the most famous longshot to win the race, though he ranks only third on the list for his 50-1 triumph in 2009. He may have been ignored in the wagering, but you wouldn’t have known it watching the race. The diminutive gelding sat in last early and rode the rail the entire way, looking like a hopeless case for much of the trip, before surging around the far turn and steamrolling his competition in the stretch to win by 6 ¾ lengths.

Other recent upsetters include Giacomo, who also won at 50-1 in 2004, and Charismatic, who took the 1999 renewal at 31-1.
