History:  Just three weeks out from the Kentucky Derby, the Lexington Stakes is one of the final chances a horse has to gain vital qualifying points. First run in 1936 as a race for two year-olds, it took a long time off from the schedule as no race was held between 1938 and 1972, when it came back on the calendar it moved to a race for three year-olds as another prep race for the Derby.

Like the other ‘Wild Card’ event in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, this race got downgraded by the American Graded Stakes Committee and is currently run as a Grade III race.
