Meeting:  Los Alamitos holds three separate, brief meets for thoroughbreds: one in the summer (late June to mid-July), one during the month of September, and a winter meet in early December. The two major races Los Alamitos runs for thoroughbreds both occur in the winter, when the Grade 1 Cash Call Futurity and Grade 1 Starlet, for 2-year-olds and 2-year-old fillies, respectively, are held. Quarter horse racing takes place year-round and the schedule is littered with lucrative stakes races, led by the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity. Other million dollar races held at the track include the Golden State Million Futurity and the Ed Burke Million Futurity.

History:  Racing at Los Alamitos began simply as match races held at a ranch owned by Frank Vessels, Sr., who made his fortune in the construction industry. In 1951, the first true meet was held at the newly established track, and the following year business took off. The track remained in the Vessels family until 1990, when Ed Allred acquired a 50 percent interest. Allred introduced the Los Alamitos $2 Million in 1995, and in 2008 it became the richest race run in California outside of the Breeders’ Cup. Known primarily for quarter horse racing, Los Alamitos expanded its dirt main track to a mile to accommodate thoroughbred racing upon the closure of Hollywood Park in 2013. The track gained more notoriety shortly thereafter, when Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome was stabled on the grounds.

Facilities:  The main attraction at Los Alamitos is the Vessels Club, which was built at a cost of $5 million in 1995 and has been named the top sports park restaurant in Southern California. The upscale dining facility is located on the top level of the grandstand with terrific views of the track and a strict dress code is enforced. Grandstand admission to the track is $3, while admission to the Vessels Club costs $10.
