History: A race for three year-old horses which is currently held at the Fair Grounds race track. It has been staged at this venue since 1932 having previously been held at Crescent City and Jefferson Park. The inaugural event was in 1894 but it has been a checkered history with several years being missed meaning the 100th running wasn’t until 2013. Initially it was named the Crescent City Derby before being named after the state. The 2006 edition was cancelled due to damage on the track from Hurricane Katrina.
Recently the race moved up to five weeks before the Kentucky Derby rather than eight and the distance was increased by 1/16 of a mile.
Todd Pletcher has overseen four winners as a trainer with Pat Day the leading jockey having win the race five times.
