Louisiana Downs Track Details
Address: 8000 E Texas St, Bossier City, LA 71111
Website: www.caesars.com/harrahs-louisiana-downs
Meeting: The thoroughbred meet takes place from early May through September and the quarter horse meet from January to March. The Grade 3, $300,000 Super Derby for 3-year-olds is the highlight of the thoroughbred meet. Though the race has lost some of its luster in recent years, it has been won by such champions as Tiznow, Sunday Silence, Seeking The Gold and Alysheba. The thoroughbred stakes action is consolidated mainly into two days, Super Derby Day and Louisiana Cup Day, the latter of which offers six stakes races for Louisiana-breds.
History: Louisiana Downs opened in 1974 in Bossier City, Louisiana, just east of Shreveport in the northwestern part of the state. The track was built by shopping center developer Edward DeBartolo, who also developed Thistledown in Ohio and Remington Park in Oklahoma. In 1980, the track’s marquee race, the Super Derby was unveiled, and at the time of its creation it was the richest race for 3-year-olds in the country. Harrah’s Entertainment purchased the track in 2002, which is now Caesars Entertainment.
Facilities: Louisiana Downs is a racino with 1,300 slot machines on the premises. Horse racing is conducted over a mile-long dirt track and a seven-furlong turf course.
