Monmouth Park Track Details
Address: 175 Oceanport Ave, Oceanport, NJ 07757
Website: www.monmouthpark.com
Meeting: Monmouth Park holds races from May through October, primarily on the weekends, and features both dirt and turf racing. The track is one of the finest in the mid-Atlantic region and its racing is headlined by the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational for 3-year-olds - one of the most prestigious races run during the summer months. The meet boasts dozens of other lucrative stakes races, including the Grade 1, $300,000 United Nations, Grade 2, $200,000 Monmouth Stakes, and Grade 3, $200,000 Monmouth Cup, and is the last bastion for thoroughbred racing in New Jersey.
History: Over the years, three different buildings have been called Monmouth Park. The initial one was opened in 1870 in Eatontown, NJ and was referred to as the “Newmarket of America.” In 1890, a new racetrack was built directly adjacent to the original, however just a few years later parimutuel betting was outlawed in the state and the track was forced to shut its doors. It wasn’t until decades later that the third version of Monmouth Park was built, when in 1946 a bill was passed that again allowed horse racing in New Jersey. The current Monmouth opened on June 19, 1946 after a 53-year hiatus. The track’s marquee race, the Haskell Invitational, was first run in 1968. Monmouth is presently owned by the New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority and operated by Darby Development.
Facilities: Monmouth Park offers general seating, clubhouse and grandstand boxes, luxury boxes and a picnic area to take in the races. After the Supreme Court legalized sports betting in 2018, a sportsbook was quickly installed at Monmouth after the decision. The track also offers a mini-golf course, a luxury restaurant named the Blu Grotto, a beer garden and several other dining options. The main track is a one-mile dirt oval, while the turf course measures seven furlongs around.
