The Alysheba kicked off the Derby City-6 Stakes this Friday at Churchill Downs as the Kentucky Oaks undercard got underway. It was a split decision going into the race with our in-house handicapper Sean was on board the betting favorite Maxfield. He has been odds-on a lot recently and saw money going on him as he went in from 4/5 on the Morning Line to 1/2 by the time the horses came to post.

Our editor's pick Chess Chief had an issue as they started to make their way towards the starting gate. He needed his bridle adjusted but Luis Saez waited patiently and he was swiftly back aboard. He went off at 7/1. Our turf-man went with Bob Baffert's Roadster who was expected to provide the speed and was a surprisingly short 3/1 play having been bet in from 9/2 on the Morning Line. The class of the field going in was clearly Maxfield though. The odds however were excessively short.

The heavy favorite allowed Visitant to make the early running and stalked him comfortably around the turn before they went three-wide and Maxfield just cruised away in the final furlong. He always looked like the winner as he strolled to victory by four lengths from Visitant. The fast finishing Chess Chief came from last place to steal the show. He clearly needed a bit more distance.

Roadster was a disappointment as Bob Baffert's five-year-old just showed very little. He hasn't won since the Santa Anita Derby in 2019 and boy it showed.

Still is was great to see Maxfield back on track. The Brendan Walsh trained horse could have big fish to fry later in the year and has every opportunity to be a fine four-year-old horse. He takes his record to six wins from seven starts with his win here today.
