Aqueduct Picks: Amoss Ships Save for the Cicada100k in Race 3

Another Aqueduct Saturday arrives. Tom Amoss ventures northward, as we highlight a Non-Graded Stakes race, The Cicada 100k, plus the rest of the field... Should be a solid card as Aqueduct ramps up for its final push.

Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 1: Purple Hearted #5, 8/5):

Chris Englehart is a conditioner from a family of horsepeople. He knows the ins and outs of this business, and when I see an entry of his, I am all in. This particular runner, Purple Hearted #5, has ability after 2 starts in the MSW class. Those weren’t poor efforts, but lacked the breaking his maiden. Now is the moment to head into this MC event, and grab a score. Should be possible with Eric Cancel riding as well as he is during this Meet.

Wager: $100 Win, #5

Favorite I Am Against: (Race 4: Breakfastatbonnies #2, 1/1):

Who wants to take a M/L odds entry that is 1/1 going a 1-turn mile? Not me! There is no question that Breakfastatbonnies #2 for Danny Gargan was wonderful breaking her maiden the first time out in an MSW burner. She won by 11+ lengths, and fired a massive speed fig. I am playing against her, even though she gets Kendrick Carmouche back to ride. Instead, I like several other choices, including Mark Hennig’s Pleasure Luck #1. She is getting Dylan Davis aboard, and is receiving first-time Lasix. She can rate, and already has some nice shots in some high-level races. If the rail is hot on Saturday, then it could be the place to be. Adding to that pick, I also like Chad Brown’s class rising Teetotaler #3 because this conditioner gets them ready, and with Manny Franco in the saddle, she should have a chance to score at a price. There is also a Todd Pletcher entry, Shanes Pretty Lady #6, who has a legitimate shot after running in several key 100k races. Here’s to hoping that Gargan’s favorite takes a step back.

Wager: $2 Exacta Wheel, 1/3/4/5/6 w 2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Esotica #6, 8/1):

Three Diamonds Farm continues to operate at a high-level, sending entries into tough stakes spots, but they also start from the “ground up.” They also made a shrewd choice when it came to nominating a chief trainer. Mike Maker is known as a turf conditioner, but that is sorely inaccurate. His dirt abilities are unheralded, and NYRA bettors overlook him for the most part. Esotica #6 is well-bred by Laoban, and with Kendrick Carmouche riding, this filly has more than an even chance. I am hoping 8/1 or higher is in the cards. Trust in Maker…

Wager: Bankroll: $100, Graduated Wager WPS, #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 3: Dirt, 6F, Cicada100k, 3F):

Several storylines always develop in a race with as short a field as this one. Speaks volumes about the sport of horse racing, in my mind. The human and animal qualities of the situation, I suppose... That is always interesting because we have a cast of characters that is quite diverse. Some in here like Raymond Handal’s 2 entries and Linda Rice’s have experience in “Non-G” events. Handal’s true masterpiece is Irish Constitution #2, who has deep class experience at several different levels. She has taken on Vequist, No’ Mo Spending, and Make Mischief. There is no doubt she will be tough, but I do not think her price of 3/1 or lower looks that attractive. Rice’s runner is Salt Pledge #3, who ran in a 100k at Laurel last out. That was a belated performance, and nothing to write home about. For that reason, and her 8/5 price, I am non-plussed. One entry that does raise the proverbial eyebrow is Tom Amoss’ shipper, Save #4. It goes without saying that Amoss knows what his team can do on the road, and since this filly is partially owned by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, you know they have something brewing. In 2 starts down at the conditioner’s base at the Fair Grounds, this 3-yr-old was sharp as could be, moving up from a MSW50k into an OC50k. Both wins were authoritative up front, and she was well-backed at the windows. The connections wouldn’t go this far north just to take in the sites and sounds of JFK Airport. To me this is a win, through and through.

Wager: $100 Win, #4
