Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: Scocciatore #7, 4/1):

This 5-yr-old by Central Banker put together a solid performance last time out at Aqueduct on 12 Feb. The gelding nearly stole the ALLW open company contest for new trainer Tom Morley. He just did not have the stamina to outlast American Monarch. Now, he is back against state bred competition, at a level he competed when he was with former conditioner Chris Englehart. I like his chances very much (that speed fig he posted was impressive—102), and if Eric Cancel can moderate the fractions up front, then he could be sitting on a victory. It would be his mount’s 1st win at “The Big A.”

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Cut the Cord #4, 6/1):

There is much to like about Jeremiah Englehart’s colt by Creative Cause. The 3-yr-old is dropping out of a pair of “Non-G” state bred races from back in January and February. The conditioner was hoping that he could handle this kind of competition, and sadly, it was not to be. Even though he was not even close to hitting-the-board, that kind of experience can actually be quite useful. Now, on the drop, he is getting Lasix for the 1st time, and the services of Jorge Vargas once again. The “Blinkers” might be just what he needs when it comes to focus. I think the price of this one is going to be pretty inviting, as David A. has him at 6/1. Let’s hope for much higher …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Dirt, 6F, Cicada S., $100k, 3F):

Over the years, this race, the Cicada S., can be a testing ground for some very good 3-yr-old filles. No one drawn into this race will be getting Lasix, since it is a “Non-G” event. With an educated guess, I am thinking that Bill Mott’s Rosebug #1 will end up being at the top of the tote. It doesn’t take a genius to know that Mott’s runners take money, and this filly by American Pharoah is going to get a chance to right the ship. She really missed in that last $100k race, so it will be interesting to see how she responds running back in this spot. Mott is a master of recalibration, and he has had her working out over a Belmont Park since January. Jose Lezcano, with his “wandering eye,” gets the call. I am going to play against this filly because I much prefer the running style and the price of Chad Brown’s oddly-spelled Exxaltress #3. Well-bred by Into Mischief, she broke her maiden nicely last time out in a MSW80k. Bettors were rather cool at the windows, as she went off at the more than square price of 4/1. I am not sure she will be that, especially since this conditioner has some gaudy numbers in situations like these. I would expect Manny Franco to give her the cue right before the field enters the turn. One other entry that I quite like the look of is Mike Maker’s Lady Scarlet #6. This filly by Union Rags was impressive down in Hot Springs running at Oaklawn in one of those difficult OC80kn1x events. Ramon Vasquez took her out at odds of 18/1, and the Paradise Farms 3-yr-old proceeded to take over the lead at the top of the lane. If she can harness some of that strength, then Kendrick Carmouche could be headed to the winner’s circle. I like this one’s chances. Let’s use her, and the other 2 that I mentioned … This is going to be a tough race, but one that should have some major value.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Wheel, 3/6 w 1
