The Grade I Arkansas Derby is the final major prep race for the Kentucky Derby. The field looks small this year with only six horses entered but the race will still provide plenty of intrigue.

Concert Tour has not just drifted up the Kentucky Derby Contender Rankings but emphatically torn up the lists following a dominant performance in the Grade II Rebel Stakes in mid-March. That win coupled with a strong run at the Grade II San Vicente gave Bob Baffert yet another horse to play on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. A strange thing has happened since that victory though - Baffert’s depth has waned.

Life is Good is out with an injury and Medina Spirit was bested out west in the Santa Anita Derby. The latter is still a Derby contender but clearly Concert Tour is now the top Baffert choice. He goes in the Grade I Arkansas Derby on Saturday and will no doubt be a short-priced favorite. He’s been drawn in Post Position 5 following the draw at Oaklawn Park this lunchtime.

The second choice may well be another Baffert horse. Hozier broke his Maiden out at Santa Anita in February but not many saw him going to Oaklawn and chasing Concert Tour home in the aforementioned Rebel Stakes. I’m luke-warm (at best) on this choice but he’s going to clearly be an option and will break from the three post.

Caddo River is splitting Horse Racing fans as many think he still has something about him. Winning the Smarty Jones in January was exciting but a fifth place finish at the Rebel just didn’t add up. I just re-watched the race and he just looked like he was running through treacle down the back stretch. Stamina is clearly a question and going the extra sixteenth of a mile doesn’t bode well. He’ll still have his supporters though.

When our in-house handicapper handicapped the Rebel Stakes he stated that the value play was Peter Miller’s Get Her Number. The winner of the Grade I American Pharoah as a two-year-old struggled to break off the rust in a disappointing run at the Rebel where he finished seventh but he’s not one to ignore.

Steve Asmussen's Super Stock and Last Samurai for Dallas Stewart round-out the extremely small field of six.

Roman Centurian was a late scratch about an hour or so before Entries were official as first reported by Ron Flatter of HorseRacingNation. The runner-up at the Robert B. Lewis was expected to enter and chase those all important Derby qualifying points.

Our turf-man will be here with his horse-by-horse analysis of the race later on Tuesday with our in-house handicapper handicapping the race on Friday...
