Morning Line Odds: 5-2

I am not an Art Collector fan, but there is much to celebrate with this brown colt this year. What a summer Tom Drury and Bruce Lunsford had! I cannot name too many instances when a 3-year-old is claimed before they reach that milestone birthday, and then they go on a run that takes them along the Triple Crown Trail.

If Art Collector did not suffer that minor foot injury before the Derby, and subsequently scratched, I am sure he would have been bet down below Authentic. Here he is back for the Preakness and the Kentucky-based connections are excited as can be. Tom Drury is not a super trainer, but he has paid his dues, working his way up through the ranks.

Maybe COVID-19 gave these guys the shot they needed because it bought time for them to train this horse up for a run through the Derby. Joe Sharp, Art Collector’s former trainer, must be kicking himself that this one got away. But that is how the biz goes.

From May on, this colt has rattled off 4 wins, with the signature one being the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at the shortened Keeneland Meet back in July (Keeneland in July? What the…). That was a strong performance. Art Collector beat Swiss Skydiver at her own game by controlling the speed up front and ran back in the Ellis Park Derby with a similar result against 11 others. He is good, but I question just how serious that foot injury is. You never know. Certainly, Brian Hernandez has made strides in his own career and this is a big opportunity for him in a major spot. If Art Collector cannot get to the lead, I do not see him having a chance to win. If he beats me, then I tip my cap.
