Friday's card at Belmont Park includes a robust slate of 9 races that offer some excellent betting opportunities. It is the continuation of 5 days straight of racing, as NYRA takes us through the July 4th Holiday. As usual, our turf-man has you covered, including a "spotlight" of the "feature" of the day. We might be off-the-turf, so check the forecast before making your wagers! It will not rain on our parade!

Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Dancing Firefly #2, 5/2):

There is no reason why Danny Gargan’s filly out of Ironicus cannot improve on her debut performance last time at Belmont. She was game in that MC40k event on the turf, and she lost the lead after the top of the stretch. I don’t think Luis Saez is going to let that happen again, and maybe with some tactical tweaking, he can get this budding talent home. Her sire by-the-way was a turf route master from a few years back, so she has the bloodlines to support running well on the sod. I am hoping she can hover around 5/2, and that makes her a solid “Win” bet, especially if the rain stays away. Firm turf should suit …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Khali’s Dream #2, 15/1):

The Wactel Stable continues to churn out runners, and they have a homebred who will be making his debut. Trying to break your maiden for the first time is tough enough, but doing it in your opening act is even more difficult. I have always liked trainer Chris Englehart, and I support his efforts to achieve major stardom in the conditioning ranks. This son of Al Khali has some major turf connections through Medaglia d’Oro, and I have played this angle with success in the past. Eric Cancel is not the flashiest of lawn jocks, but he is more than pedestrian, as far as I am concerned. The best news of all … the price on this one is going to be magnificent. There are few threats drawn in here to my eye. We should have a shot to cash some sort of across-the-board bet. Have confidence …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #5 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Turf, AOC45k, F&M 3+):

Some able-bodied grass sprinters will be taking to the Widener Course for this OC45k event, and it is going to be a well-matched field entered for this one.

Favoritism will reside with either of the Christophe Clement runners who are both out of Into Mischief … Kokopelli #9 or Mischievous Dream #6. Jockeying on the tote will make for an interesting contest in itself, as it will not be an exercise in watching paint dry. My sense is to throw in with the latter because this filly has the class advantage after a run back in early May in a 75k “Non G” affair. That was a 3rd place for the salty dame, and I think she can improve off that performance with Javier Castellano in the saddle. The more popular choice of the pair will probably be the former, since she is 2/2, with her last out being a nice win in an ALLW80k event. She has a strong afterburner, and Irad makes her even more bulletproof. Her weakness is the class angle, and she can remedy that with a solid score here.

As for the rest of the field, I would not count out Jorge Duarte’s Silky Blue #3. She has some major attributes, and they begin and end with being a daughter of Hard Spun. Those take to the turf nicely, and the addition of Johnny V is going to be a plus. This filly has nice comps, and she has the real estate experience to back it up. Maybe some of her recent misses were due to traffic troubles, and that can be rectified with a rider change like she gets here. Using her makes a ton of sense.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/6/9
