Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Jaxson Traveler #7, 5/2):
Although Steve Asmussen had his colt running on the dirt at Pimlico last time, this sprinter does have the ability to do well on the grass. A Maryland bred out of Munnings, his career includes some excellent performances. That is probably why he has career earnings that almost reach to $400k. When it comes to ownership groups, West Point Thoroughbreds is one of the best, helmed by the impressive Terry Finely. I would expect this one to be ready to go in this contest.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 3: #2, 8/1):
Looking for a runner that can offer us some major value, I think the Jerkens Barn has one that is worth a bet. Team Valor has an excellent record in spots like these. The son of Gemologist can improve after her U.S. debut went off rather well in an ALLW Co. race. Hitting the board at Saratoga is not bad at all at odds of 8/1. Most bettors think Jerkens doesn’t have the moxie, but I like the opportunity with Joel Rosario aboard.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Turf, 6F, Christiecat S., $100k, 3F):
Heading to the Inner Turf Course at Big Belmont, we have a nice “Non-G” event on the card that is sure to be a handicapping puzzle. The question is … do you think you can tab a runner that has the grass sprinting ability to best Christophe Clement’s Bye Bye #10? The filly out of Into Mischief does look strong after competing in a trio of tough company at Belmont and Saratoga. The G3 race last time she was here went well, winning by a neck over Invincible Gal. With Joel Rosario aboard, that could mean a legitimate victory or, like his last 2 tries aboard, a significant miss.
A survey of the rest of this field yields some interesting results. I am keen on a pair of runners that could bring some serious value. Arnaud Delacour’s Sussex Garden #2 is a turf player after competing in an ALLW Co. race at Saratoga last time. These are tough races, and are rather like a “Non-G.” I find Javier Castellano’s sprint riding on the grass to be vastly improved since the summer, and he gets aboard once again. Using this one at odds of 6/1 makes a ton of sense. The other blazer I like is Mike Trombetta’s Can’t Buy Love #7. This filly is bred for the turf out of Twirling Candy, and has a record of stakes competition that is quite impressive. Some of those attempts ended out of the minors, but experience is experience. Including these 2 is a bet!
Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Cold, 2 w 10 w 7
