Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Scuttlebuzz #11, 7/2):
If you are looking for a “best bet” this Sunday, then take a look at this “Rudy Rod” entry. When it comes to running on the turf, sons and daughters of The Factor end up doing well. This gelding should appreciate the return to the green, and there is no doubt Jose Lezcano knows his business. Getting back to burning shorter at Belmont at this level is exactly what he wants to do. With a record of 3/1-2-0, that speaks to solidness, and at 7/2 on the M/L, a nice-looking bet. Formerly in the excellent care of Jonathan Thomas, I am sure the 4-yr-old possesses a firm foundation. For these reasons = a best bet!
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #11
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 10: Blame It On Brutus #2, 10/1):
Trainer Mark Hennig does not have a super stable, but he still has some quality in his midst at times, and I like the look of this gelding out of Blame. Bred for the turf on both sides, this neophyte made his debut at Saratoga, and I am sure he discovered what it was like to be on a racetrack in competition. That was a dirt sprint, and even though he did hit the board, it was 11-lengths back, going off at odds of 11/1. I am hoping the turf will suit, and based on the pedigree (both sides), I might be on to something. Eric Cancel retains the mount, and he has the ability to ride home a winner, every now and then.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 1 Mile, Pebbles S., $150k, 3F):
The highlight of the Sunday card is this tough turf race for 3-yr-old fillies that will test their very fiber. Nothing like a bunch of youthful milers … This race is rather a cutback affair for those that did not want to brave yesterday’s Jockey Club Oaks. As far as a “deserving favorite” … there isn’t really one. Sure, Christophe Clement’s Plum Ali #1 is 7/2 on the M/L with Jose Ortiz aboard, but she hasn’t exactly been very consistent since the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf (G1) where she was 5th. Coming into this spot, I am sure she will be over bet and thus, a significant underlay. That means looking elsewhere is a much better plan, and I have a pair of runners in mind that should offer some major value.
Graham Motion’s Oyster Box #13 is full of class, and after a pair of Grade 3 affairs, he should be able to handle this group without issue. I am not sure that Kendrick Carmouche is the greatest of lawn jockeys … will see. As for a top selection, I am bullish on Bradley Thoroughbreds and their entry who is trained by Chad Brown—Minaun #3. This filly out of Zoffany (IRE) can handle this distance, and with Luis Saez riding, looks to be a great price on the M/L at 8/1. Her last 2 efforts were excellent, even if they did not result in a score. Brown’s ability to condition is second-to-none, when it comes to spots like these … You are getting one of the hottest riders in all of America in Saez … should be a bet coming off the Lake George (G3) at Saratoga.
Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Cold, 3/13/1
