Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner:  Platinum Paynter (Race 8) - I can understand those who might be skeptical of this filly as she’s been getting away with some beautiful trips and is trained by a guy who hasn’t had much success on the NYRA circuit, however I think we’ve seen enough of her to know she’s for real. She’s coming off a third-place finish in the G3 Beaugay, which was a far better race than this, and it doesn’t hurt that her main competition, Kalifornia Queen, appears better suited to longer distances. If Platinum Paynter delivers anything close to what we’ve grown accustomed to from her, she shouldn’t lose this race.

Best Value:  Discretionary Marq (Race 6) - This horse isn’t going to be a big price, but boy did he run a big race last out over this turf course, dueling through wicked early splits and then opening up a clear lead in the stretch only to get run down late. The trainer change to Rob Atras is somewhat of a positive, but Discretionary Marq’s main appeal lies in the extraordinary effort he turned in last out. If he’s able to relax more early, he should absolutely be able to handle this field.

Other Races of Interest:  Race 5 - This is another case in which bettors might be skeptical of a horse due to a low-profile trainer, but Knockout Punch (#5) has run well on this circuit with regularity for Bob Dunham. There’s really nobody trustworthy signed on for this race, so I’m happy to take this horse, who has shown some ability in his turf sprints, anywhere near his 9-2 morning-line odds, though I’m expecting him to drift up a bit from there and get lost in the wagering shuffle.

Race 7 - This is a pretty wide-open starter allowance race on dirt, however I think Cadeau de Paix (#7) stands out as being a cut above her competition. There are a couple others who have a right to improve in this spot, but Cadeau de Paix has been a steady performer in New York over the past several months and is coming off a career-best performance over this track for her new trainer Robert Klesaris. I think she’s going to appreciate the cutback to 6 ½ furlongs after last running at a mile, and in my mind she’s a very likely winner in what appears to be a confusing race.
