1½ (Dirt) Brooklyn Stakes (G2), $400k, 4+

Older runners who might like to reminisce on the bygone Triple Crown days that they may or may not have participated in, can take solace here. The Brooklyn S. is a Grade 2 affair that has become quite the distance test, going the full-length of “Big Sandy.” Last year’s contest was part of a slew of cancellations, and it is good to see it back on the menu this year.

The 2021 edition of this race seems to be short on talent. Just a quick rundown of the M/L odds speaks to the fact that no clear favorite exists. Certainly, runners like Musical Heart #5, Moretti #6, Ajaaweed #7, Tizamagician #8, and Lone Rock #9 should be competitive. Of those, I am partial to Todd Pletcher’s #7 because I thought the 4-yr-old colt showed a vast improvement stepping into “Non-G” Co. at Belmont in late April. He was more than a square price, finishing 2nd to Rob Atras’ #5. Both of course are moving up into this spot, and that will not be easy. But they are on the “make,” and that is more than just a little bit enticing.

As for others that might take money, the #6 will bring attention. I am not sure this one is ready to go off-the-bench, but here the 5-yr-old is at 4/1. Ortiz is such a formidable rider, and his numbers continue to be incredibly high. If Repole and Eclipse Thoroughbreds have it their way, then we will see this son of Medaglia d’Oro blowing and going down the lane. The fact that Irad replaces Javier Castellano is an interesting choice; clearly the connections wanted an upgrade from last year. That does not guarantee a victory though.

Speaking of winning, it looks like Tizamagician #8 will garner some support from bettors, and Richard Mandella has this one in a good spot considering his last effort in the Tokyo City (G3). That event at Santa Anita had a short field of 5, but Flavien Prat urged the colt on, and won by a tantalizing 9-lengths. If the MyRacehorse and Spendthrift-owned router can handle the distance once again, she could be enroute to a victory. Will see …

With the rest of this field being pretty weak, I am even considering Robertino Diodoro’s entry—Lone Rock #9. This conditioner continues to expand his entry-base, and he is hoping that this gelding can ship to Belmont for a run in here. The distance should not be an issue considering that the son of Majestic Warrior has run at this distance 3x before. A pair of those tries were wins, by-the-way.

Taking into consideration all of these runners, it might be best to roll them into a Trifecta Wheel. That will assist in maximizing profit, and give us a number of options to score. This is the race to play some exotics, especially considering it can go in so many directions.

Wagering Recommendation: $1 Trifecta Wheel, 7/8 w 5/6/7/8/9 w 5/6/7/8/9, and/or 5/6/7/8/9 w 7/8 w 5/6/7/8/9
