Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Saranya #8, 7/2):
Trainer Brad Cox comes to Canterbury looking for spoils on this Wednesday card that is laden with “Non-G” turf races. Here is a well-bred filly for the turf that is by The Factor. That former Bob Baffert runner has produced some excellent grass racers over the years. I am pleased to see this one return to Minnesota, after going up against some tough competition throughout the fall and spring. When you are racing against the likes of Toby’s Heart, Navratilova, Market Rumor, and Gam’s Mission, that builds class, for sure. Regular Cox rider, Florent Geroux comes to town, and the last time he was aboard this 4-yr-old, it was on the turf at CBY last year at this time … the result … a win!
Wager Recommendation: $100 Win, #8
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: On Your Mark #7, 8/1):
In the hands of jockey Rey Gutierrez, a horse that likes to sprint is going to be “asked” to go early. Gutierrez does not seem to have much in-the-way of patience when it comes to mounts on the grass. However, in a situation like this one, it could prove profitable. A gelding by Mark Valeski, this 5-yr-old has a record of high-speed jaunts on the sod. Maybe, he can get a win on his 1st trip to Canterbury for trainer Greg Foley? This conditioner has good stock, and I like this runner's price on the M/L … 8/1. Time to head to the blocks … on your mark … get set …
Wager Recommendation: Bankroll, $100, Graduated WPS, #7 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Turf, 1 Mile, Mystic Lake Derby, $150k, 3):
The highest price stakes race on the card is this one … a 1-mile affair on the turf. It should be an excellent wagering opportunity, especially since we have what looks to be a well-matched field of 11. This is a sod event where anyone … and I mean anyone … could jump up and score. Traffic troubles, poor rating, and split-second decisions that are overlooked by riders, could translate to missing the podium. When it comes to a top selection, I am pretty interested in Brendan Walsh’s Heaven Street #10. A transfer by Siena Farm from Christophe Clement to Walsh, the Street Sense colt was up against a tough crowd in the Woodhaven S. $100k at Aqueduct back in April. He is a talented runner, and jockey Javier Castellano should be able to work out a suitable trip. Don’t forget that he won the Columbia S. $75k at Tampa in March, and that race traditionally produces some excellent divisional runners. Thinking about others that could make a splash, I also like the look of Greg Foley’s Stitched #8. It is hard to disagree that he will be a player in a spot like this one, especially after that score at Horseshoe Indy last month. Florent Geroux is going to have one major task … get to the lead. I think that actually makes him vulnerable in a spot like this one. With late speed signed on, he could be facing an onslaught once the top of the lane arrives. One other entry that could prove formidable is Tom Amoss’ Dowagiac Chief #6. The colt by Cairo Prince competed in some very difficult contests throughout the spring. None of those were “easy,” but this one built a solid resume. Rey Gutierrez is going to have to try and find a spot just off the lead … if he does, the score could be his … Here is the wager …
Wager: $2 Trifecta Box, 6/8/10
