Del Mar Picks: Clement L. Hirsch Stakes the feature on August 6

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is ready for another day of racing, close to the surf … and we know what is to come on the grass, aka the turf! Situated right next to Solana Beach in SoCal, the Del Mar Meet brings together the very best racing.

With picks and analysis through Labor Day, it should be a rousing series of great races ... Some of the highlights include today's Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, which is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" contest ... also, do not forget about the Del Mar Handicap, and eventually, the TVG Pacific Classic. Late Pick 4 … Races 8-11

Race 8: Turf, 1 Mile, St.ALLW50k, F&M 3+

The LP4 begins on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course, and I am having a hard time getting around Doug O’Neill’s Deise Delight #4. A 5-yr-old mare by Brazen Beau (AUS), she looks fairly classy when it comes to her form. Running against OC50k Co. at Santa Anita, she acquitted herself well. Dropping down into this company should be appreciated, and I like the fact that she already has a trio of attempts on the lawn at DMR. Right now, Umberto Rispoli is riding as strong as he ever has in America, and it is great to witness. His patience on this surface is second-to-none, and when he finds that gap late, I don’t think there is anyone that can match him. This one is a clear “Single” for me …

Leg 1: 4 (Single)

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager, WPS # ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Clement L. Hirsch S. (G1), $400k, F&M 3+

The highlight of the afternoon is this Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race, which feeds into the Longines Distaff (G1). Last year, it was Brad Cox’s Shedaresthedevil #5 that went wire-to-wire in this race, and she had it “her way.” If no one challenges her, then she can be absolutely devastating out in front. She is a beautiful, majestic mare by Daredevil, but I honestly believe that she is going to be beaten this afternoon even with her regular rider aboard, Florent Geroux. Advancing in age, I think she could be vulnerable as the favorite from a betting standpoint. The rest of these entries have some skills, and I particularly like Samurai Charm #6 from the barn of Peter Miller. Well-bred when it comes to races just like these, she could be primed for a major victory. Del Mar has already given us some thrilling races, so do not shy away from taking some major shots.

Leg 2: 1/2/3/4/6/7 (6-Deep)

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box,

Race 10: Turf, 1 1/16th, California Dreamin’ S., $150k, 3+ Cal Breds

The turf is near the surf in this aptly-named race—California Dreamin’. My top choice comes from a small barn run by Dean Pederson. It would be excellent to see him collect this victory, and Carmelita’s Man #2 is not without a chance. By Mucho Macho Man, the gelding got a bit of a break after running 5x at Santa Anita in the spring. The last of those contests on the grass was a victory in a state bred “Non-G.” Jockey JJ Hernandez is leading this Meet already, and he has picked up right where he left off up in Arcadia. One other that I want to consider is Andy Mathis’ Jimmy Blue Jeans #7. I have watched and wagered on this son of James Street before, and he did not disappoint. Ridden by Kyle Frey, the plan will be to rate confidently, and if he can, it might get him to the winner’s circle. My objective is to use both of these runners in a number of bets … a pair of aces …

Leg 3: 2/7 (2-Deep)

Wagering Recommendation: $25/$50 WP #2

Race 11: Dirt, 5½F, MC50k, 3+ Cal Breds

The finale on this Saturday is destined to be a street fight on the MT. When it comes to sprinting, you always want a speedster that can show effort during that last furlong. Trainer Tim Yakteen has a gelding by Will Take Charge dropping back down to MC Co. Dutch Bus #7 did not run poorly against MSW folks, and this will be an easier spot. George Sharp owns some good ones, and it will be interesting to see if Florent Geroux can get his Meet on track. I also like a first-time starter from the barn of Tim McCanna, who also happens to own this gelding by Mr. Big. Appropriately named, Big Spin #12 has worked nicely, and that tab could be a tell-tale sign of good things to come. Here is a chance for Francisco Duran to notch himself a nice win … This is a large field, and hitting the “All Button” would not be out of character, but definite opinions win the day. Looking forward to being alive this late in the ticket …
