Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 9: Amy C #7, 5/1):

The power of Phil D’Amato on the grass in SoCal is well-known, and he is reloaded and ready for another great DMR Meet. This filly by Charming Thought (GB) was formerly trained by Chad Brown, and once she came over from France for Madaket, she really never got to strut her stuff. In a pair of starts for her new barn she has run nicely despite ending up 4th in the Wilshire S. (G3). Don’t forget though that Canoodling had his way in that race, controlling the pace upfront. In a high-caliber OC100k, she returned impressively to score with Umberto Rispoli in the irons. She has the class rating to game with the best in this race, and anything over 3/1 on the tote should be considered an overlay.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Degree of Risk #8, 10/1):

Godolphin has had a minor presence in SoCal for some time now, and their training rep out there is Eoin Harty. The homebred by Cairo Prince is dropping out of the Sham S. (G3) where he was a country mile behind Newgrange. His prior form though was mainly on the turf, so returning to that surface should be a welcome move. Rested … he should be able to draw on those experiences at Woodbine, Del Mar, and Golden Gate (AW). Jockey Drayden Van Dyke gets the call, and he has a golden opportunity to point in the right direction. When you can ride with confidence, it can make a huge difference when you are trying to move forward. This one is a super wager based on the M/L odds …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #8 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 11: Turf, 1 Mile, San Clemente S. (G2), $200k, 3F):

The 3-yr-old fillies get their chance in the mirror of the Oceanside S. This contest is a G2, so there is quite a bit on the line. With a packed field, there are so many ways to go. That translates to a magnificent betting race, and if you can find the right combination, it will pay handsomely. When it comes to a top choice, I am pretty keen to back one of Phil D’Amato’s many entries … Island of Love #8. She has the chops to take on this crew, especially after contesting both the Senorita S. (G3) and Honeymoon S. (G3) at Santa Anita. That score in the former showcased her ability to track just off-the-pace. With JJ Hernandez serving as pilot, you can bet he is going to have his mount in the proper position when the time comes. When it comes to finishing off a ticket, I also like one of the other D’Amato plays. Bellabel #6 transferred from Ireland, and won her U.S. debut in January in the Blue Norther S. $100k. Umberto Rispoli gets the call, and this 3-yr-old deserves respect, even with the layoff. My remaining choices include the 2 runners drawn to the inside. John Shirreffs’ Lady T #1 tries the turf for the 1st time, but she was ultra-competitive against maiden company at “The Great Race Place.” We all know that offspring of Into Mischief can be very versatile. The other runner that piques my interest is Jeff Mullins’ Countess Rosina #2. By Dandy Man (IRE), the filly has made the transition from running in the UK. She could be very dangerous with Ryan Curatolo aboard. This is going to be quite a race … don’t miss out on the chance to place a bet … what an opportunity!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 8 w 1/2/6 w 1/2/6
