Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Deise Delight (IRE) #6, 9/5):

The Doug O’Neill-trainee just did not have enough gas in the tank to complete the win in that ALLW50k event back on 25 July at Del Mar. The 4-yr-old filly was game up front, and her style is pretty inviting. The daughter of an Australian sprinter, she likes firm ground and plenty of it. I think the cutback in this race comes at an excellent time. With Flavien Prat continuing to ride at such a high-level, this one should be primed for a score. A couple of misses at 1 mile, could be wiped off the books with a score here. She is more than capable …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Ten the Smart Way #5, 8/1):

If you are after a long shot on Thursday, then maybe looking at this one is the way to go. This is a tough race from the standpoint of who gets to the lead. If my pick, a 3-yr-old filly out of Smart Bid can do it, then she might have a shot at redemption. Last time out, she got pinballed at the break, and could not stay the course on the engine. I think she can get the distance that is required here. She has Ricardo Gonzalez on her back, and I like his skills in the saddle very much. I think a clean trip is what is needed in this spot, as she is still coming into her own for conditioner Andy Mathis.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #5 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 1 3/8ths, AOC62.5k, 3+):

The “feature” scheduled for this Thursday is an OC event with all sorts of possibilities. You could easily just go with Ward ‘n Jerry #5 from the venerable barn of Mike Puype. He is a trainer who specializes in hard work, above board practices, and is just generally a wonderful guy. When I see his runners entered, it makes me perk up more than any other local SoCal trainer. This is a more than seasoned 8-yr-old who has been a fan favorite. In 29 starts, the gelding has 8 wins on record. Every time Puype drops this one down, he seems to rebound nicely. There is no reason to think that cannot happen as Flavien Prat gets aboard once again.

For something better priced, why not take a chance on Rijeka #7. Phil D’Amato got this one from Saffie Joseph, and he is bringing the gelding to SoCal for a fresh start. With back class that is undeniable, she should be well-placed to take on this group. Running at such a distance will not be a problem, especially since his pedigree speaks to turf racing like this. Even though he was no match for that Pan American (G2) field 2-back, he has the ability to come out to the West Coast for a win. This could be one to watch as the season shifts back to Santa Anita in the fall, and then returns to Del Mar for the Bing Season in November.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 7 w 5
