Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Torosay #6, 5/2):

Trainer Doug O’Neill has this gelding pointed to the turf in what looks like one of the best races on the Sunday card. Earning a victory in a spot like this one is never easy, so the 5-yr-old out of Goldencents is going to need to be at the top of his game. He can do it with JJ Hernandez in the irons. This is a jockey who can regulate pace, and knows when to push the button to go. Dropping down from a 3rd place finish in the Green Flash Handicap (G3). The winner that day was John Sadler’s experienced Chaos Theory. The O’Neill speedster just missed placing by a hair. Some class relief in this race should be appreciated.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Fowler Blue #6, 12/1):

If you are looking for a Sunday angle to play on the card, use the old run-backer bet. I like this one quite a bit, especially from trainers who have solid reps. Luis Mendez is sending this young colt out of Curlin to Mischief back to the MT at Del Mar. He just ran on 31 July, and though that effort was poor, Mendez thinks there is a reason to come right back at it. To me that shows heart, and the fact that he knows what is best for his animal. I do not think he would employ this method, if he did not think it could work. There is talent here, and maybe the trio of Team Solis will fail to capture the score. The unheralded veteran rider Edwin Maldonado gets the call. Nice choice … This is a “Non-G,” which will take the effort of his life. Nothing easy …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 1 1/16th, La Jolla H. (G3), $150k, 3):

The “Feature” on Sunday’s card is the Grade III La J., which brings together a small group of grass routers.

When it comes to supremacy on the tote Phil D’Amato’s Cathkin Peak #4 should be well-backed. He was behind Rock Your World last time out in the Pasadena 100k, and finished 2nd … 2+ lengths back. Since then, his conditioner has tried to ready him to enter competition once again. I am against this one simply because it is tough to come off-the-bench and be sharp in a Grade III.

You might conclude that Bob Baffert’s entry is the play. Hudson Ridge #3 looks to be in good form after a pair of scores at Santa Anita in a “Non-G” and OC100k. I am not much of a fan of Baffert’s turf training because he just doesn’t do it that much. Abel Cedillo is an adequate lawn jock, but there are others who are clearly better.

When it comes to a top selection, then I am on board with John Sadler’s Sword Zorro #6. Aptly-named, this colt out of Zoffany (IRE) can cut, thrust, and swagger with the best grass runners. Ridden by Umberto Rispoli, he should offer more value than the others I mentioned. Though he was bested by Baffert’s charge last out in that “Non-G,” I am banking that the connections can flip the script, and run on for the win.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/4/6
